Growing up in the Midwest, I really appreciated Foghat for coming around many times to put on a great live act. One of the few to visit the smaller venues in the middle of the country. A hard-working band for sure.
FOGHAT!!!!! I had forgotten about them (terrible on my part I know, life, life in the way). What a great band and what great memories. Thanks for doing this one. GREAT JOB PETE and SOT.
My list: top 5: 5. Night Shift 4. R& R Outlaws 3. Fool for the City 2. Energized 1. Rock & Roll This was the 1st band I saw live. They opened for Edgar Winter Group. Great show!
Totally agree with that. AC/DC(If You Want Blood), Blue Oyster Cult(Some Enchanted Evening), Judas Priest(Unleashed In The East) & Robin Trower(Live)are others that should've been double live albums.
That was so funny, the entire speech he gave. The Foghat bit is still something that even after all these years, still makes me laugh when I think about it !
@PVD Guitars. Not sure what “Foghat foremost a live band really means.” If you mean the studio releases were buoyed beyond proportion by the live performances I disagree. In fact it’s exceedingly impressive how good the records were and how many went gold and platinum considering Foghat was on the Bearsville label which was a tiny outfit when compared to the mainstream labels in rock and blues rock. Also it takes an uncommon familiarity with a band’s body of work to make the kind of statement you made given your definition is what I suggested. Even the reviewer - who did a fine job - left out many recordings from his top ten that I would have bad plenty to say about due to their distinctive attributes and masterful musicianship. Example, on Rock & Roll Outlaws “Trouble in My Way has beautiful slide guitar reminiscent of George Harrison’s touch; Chateau LaFitte ‘59 Boogie comes out storming and remains throughought; Eight days on the road has an outstanding extended intro after which Dave pushes the limits further with his commanding vocal attack.
Thanks Pete I was waiting for Foghat. I have them all up until Tight Shoes. All good. Live is timeless and the first Foghat album I bought way back in 1978.
Certain songs reminds you of certain times. The song DRIVIN WHEEL 1976 Nightshift album reminds me delivering newspapers on my first paper route at 14 yrs old in northern New Jersey. Great 👍 show PETE
FOGHAT!!!!! Finally! I own the "Complete Bearsville Albums Collection", 11 albums from that era including "Foghat Live", and Mobile Fidelity's Hybrid SACD "Fool for the City". Toss in "Best of Foghat" and that's my collection. One of "MY" bands. Love that group. I think your rankings and mine are pretty much in line. Only move...moving "Stone Blue" up a tad higher.
#1. "Foghat Live". Can't get around it, it's right up there with "Frampton Comes Alive". #2. "Fool for the City". 'Nuff said. #3. "Night Shift". #4. "Stone Blue". #5. "Energized". #6. "Foghat (Rock and Roll)". #7. "Rock and Roll Outlaws". #8. "Foghat". #9. "Tight Shoes". #10. "Boogie Motel".
My family and I were friends with Colin Earl (Mungo Jerry keyboard player) and brother of Roger Earl. Colin was such a nice guy and even presented me a signed copy of their then new album, Stone Blue, for my birthday, which was totally unexpected. No prizes for guessing what my personal no. 1 is 1 Stone Blue 2 Energised 3 Night Shift 4 Fool For The City 5 Rock and Roll 6 Return of The Boogie Men 7 Rock and Roll Outlaws 8 Tight Shoes 9 Foghat 10 Boogie Motel.
SO happy that you highlighted “Take it or Leave it” Pete. I’ve been a massive Foghat fan since ‘74 and even amongst all the raunch and boogie, this has always been my favourite song of theirs. That funky keyboard opening, Rods sublime guitar solo and best of all Dave’s vocal. Especially the last two minutes. Just shows, if we ever needed proof, what an amazing and soulful singer he was.
Before Foghat, Rod Price was the guitarist for Black Cat Bones, a fantastic psych/blues rock group that released one self-titled record in 1970. He actually replaced Paul Kossoff, who left Black Cat Bones to found Free.
Interesting theory but without Rod Price who never played for Savoy Brown there is no Foghat. Clearly both Dave and Rod were each indispensable to Foghat. They were the band’s songwriting team and arrangers. And Dave’s vocals overshadowed his accomplished rhythm guitar playing and brilliant chemistry with Rod. Most importantly in this discussion is that lead guitarist Rod Price played slide guitar and it was those slide guitar riffs, runs, along with his melodic guitar.harmonies on recordings which altogether formed the signature Foghat sound. Both Dave’s vocals and Rod’s slide guitar were indispensable to the sound of the band Foghat.
The first Foghat's album I got to listen to was 'Stone Blue', a cassette I bought very cheap. Craig MacGregor's bass is all over the album, not to mention Rod Price's "dentist drill" guitar sound. I was 17 years old and didn't know 'It Hurts Me Too', 'Sweet Home Chicago' and 'Chevrolet' were cover versions of classic songs. The second album I got to know was 'Fool For The City'. This time, I worked at a Rock FM station in my home town and this album was left in my hands. Years later, I got to know and download the whole catalog via Audiogalaxy when it was the free and a much better alternative to Napster. I was recently given two vinyl records: 'Tight Shoes' and 'Energized'. If I'm not mistaken, Dave Peverett's voice was recorded with some kind of sound effect on their first albums. 'Stone Blue' might not be the best Foghat's studio album, but it is the one I enjoy more. I hope to get a record vinyl copy of this album. Btw, I love CDs too.
Oh man I loved Foghat in the 70’s. Saw them twice live as opening acts. One was 1973 they opened for Johnny Winter at the old West Palm Beach Auditorium. Still have a photo of them onstage at that show. They were rocking back then. Thanks for posting their albums here.
The live album photos are at Soldier Field , Chicago. Part of the " SUPERBOWL OF ROCK" concert series 1977. Other shows were > ELP , PINK FLOYD, LYNYRD SKYNYRD, PETER FRAMPTON , JOURNEY.
1. Rock & Roll Outlaw, 2. Foghat (Rock & Roll), 3. Fool For The City, 4. Stone Blue, 5. Night Shift, 6. S/T, 7. Energized 8. Boogie Motel, 9. Tight Shoes (all that I have heard)
Great list Pete for a fantastic but somewhat forgotten blues/rock band. Been a fan for a long long time. I would agree with moving Night Shift up a bit but overall this is a fine list.

You’re absolutely correct - it’s dynamite , all 6 tracks and left me saying - where’s the rest of it , too Along with Frampton Comes Alive and Made in Japan , one of the very best live albums of the 70’s ( or after)
Hi Pete, just want to say thank you so much, the amount of albums/records I’ve discovered to check out via your recommendations is always spot on. Thank you, this is my favourite channel 👌♠️🤘
"Tight Shoes" is utterly hated by so many longtime Foghat fans that I was surprised, when I finally heard it, many years after its release, that I liked it so much! It's definitely not up there with "Rock and Roll" or "Fool for the City," but "Tight Shoes" still rocks!
Thanks Pete, been looking for this like forever,Top 5 for me is 5,Energised- 4,Stone Blue- 3,In The Mood For Something Rude- 2,Fool For The City- 1,Nightshift

My brother in law (Pistol Pete) opened up for them, got to go inside their tour bus after the show and drummer Roger Earl had all the bandmates sign my Fool For The City album, looking at it hanging on the wall right now Sweet !! Rod Price was an outstanding slide guitarist, right up there with Johnny Winter & Duane Allman
Nice one of my favorites!! 1- R&R Outlaws 2- Energized 3- Night Shift 4- Fool For The City 5- Stone Blue. And of course their classic Live Album “Foghat Live”.
Pete...all in all I have the same ten albums in a different order. You never mentioned from Fool for the City's My Babe. Great boogie song. Honorable Mention goes to the last Savoy Brown album with Lonesome Dave, Roger Earl and Tony (Tone) Stevens called Looking In. Definitely set the template for future Foghat releases.
Worked at an Ann Arbor Kroger Feb 2017 and heard a song. I shazam'd it and realized it was Road Fever from Foghat Live. Listened to the albums entirety on TH-cam and downloaded it. I mentioned this on the bands Facebook about a year and for a bit acheived minor Internet celebrity fame. It was noticed by the pages' moderator (the drummers wife I believe) said, "Really Nick? Road Fever live? What Kroger" and I mentioned Ann Arbor. So for 3-5 days my post received 100 likes. Generally I don't like bragging but it's worth a mention. Also, Fool for the City, Rock and Roll, and Energized are great albums.
Most definitely pete return of the boogiemen is a kickass cd .That has to be one of the best comeback cds ever.If any foghat fans havent heard it you must give it a listen. You wont be disappointed. LONG LIVE LONESOME DAVE & ROD PRICE.
@@cranstonsnord4334 Why? because you say so? Yet he seemed to not make the 100 Best Rock Guitarists in Rolling Stone. And if your not a fan of the band or a musician, the casual fan would not know him. Sorry, I have read several articles on the band and most include that Rod Price is certainly underrated in the guitar world. No one thinks of him as top slide guitarist as he should be. Johnny Winter, Duane Allman, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Ry Cooder, even George Thorogood would all come to mind before Rod. It's a shame, your preaching to the choir. Any guitarist who can take over for Koss in Black Cat Bones is alright in my book. Foghat seems to be the English version of Grand Funk Railroad. Loved by fans, but spurned by critics. 🥁
@@LouieCaporussoJr I just looked at that Rolling Stone list again, and you may be correct! I was never a fan of Rolling Stone magazine, but that list of guitarists was built on votes from some of Price's peers. I also noticed there was a lot of other guitarists missing from that list, like Steve Hackett, Steve Howe, Alan Holdsworth, Uli Jon Roth, Andrew Latimer, and probably more. As a matter of fact, there were no prog guitarists at all there. Maybe us fans of the band knew better! I am not a musician, but all I know is I have never heard anybody play slide like Rod Price and Foghat's popularity dropped like a rock after he left.
@@cranstonsnord4334 LOL, nor did I want to use Rolling Stone as a case in point but you saw what I meant. Prog guitarists? forget about it. Not a mention. So, it's always been up to fans to keep the music alive. Check out my channel if you'd like and subscribe. If not, thank you for the conversation. 🥁
Excellent work, as always. Still waiting for the ranked albums from Weather Report, which you promised 2 months ago. Something from Canned Heat in the future?
Hey Pete! So about 3 weeks ago, I discovered Kadavar and I have fallen in love with them and have been binging their albums. And for whatever reason yesterday, I decided to check the site to see if there were any reviews up (by any SOT staff). And not only did I see that YOU’VE reviewed all their studio albums, I also saw that you REALLY like them too! So, how about a Kadavar ranking show? Unless I’ve missed it, I don’t think you’ve done a ranking albums show on them
"Chateau Lafitte '59 Boogie" from Rock n Roll Outlaws.. was a concert staple.. saw Foghat 6 or 7 times in the 70s and this song always brought the crowd to its feet.......can't understand why you forgot to mention this great song
1. Energized 2. Rock & Roll. 3. Foghat 4. Stone Blue 5. Night Shift. 6. Rock & Roll Outlaws 7. Return of the Boogie Men 8. Fool fo the City (should be higher but if I never hear Slow Ride or the title track again, it will be to soon. Sorry)
Foghat and Savoy Brown. Two bands who had to go to the States to make it, we all knew about them, they got the press too, but people in the u.k. just didn’t buy their albums, and just didn’t take to them, I couldn’t tell you why.
Probably sounded "too American". I know I was surprised, as most people I've known were, when I found out they were English. As an aside, Pardo mentioned "Take It or Leave It" off of FFTC and its disco-style beats. Hazarding a guess, it was co-written by the only American in the band at the time.
The Donald I don’t think it’s because they sounded too American, loads of American bands big sellers in the uk at that time. It’s probably just a lot better u.k. bands around at that time.
I absolutely love Tight Shoes! I know it's not considered to be a great album...most people say it's one of their worst. My mom had it on 8 track, and when she played it, I'd be mesmerized...especially when the guitars would kick in on "Baby Can I Change Your Mind". I was 8 in 1980. Still love it now in 2020! I don't care what anyone says, that album is fantastic. Other than that, Slow Ride is their best song in my opinion.
Love FOGHAT but Slowride was/is WAY overplayed.....my favorite tunes are "Drivin Wheel"...."Easy Money"......."Nervous Release"....."I Just Want to Make Love to You"....High on Love"....Honey Hush LIVE"
1) Fool for the City 2) Energized 3) Night Shift 4) Foghat (aka Rock and Roll) 5) Rock and Roll Outlaws 6) Foghat 7) Stone Blue 8) Return of the Boogie Men 9) Tight Shoes 10) Boogie Motel 11) Family Joules 12) Under the Influence 13) Last Train Home 14) Zig-Zag Walk 15) Girls to Chat & Boys to Bounce
My knowledge of this band stops abruptly after 1980's "Tight Shoes", so my list won't have anything more recent than that. All of these are worth a listen, even if there are a few too many cover tunes, in my opinion. 9) Boogie Motel 8) Stone Blue 7) Foghat (1973) 6) Tight Shoes 5) Rock and Roll Outlaws 4) Energized 3) Night Shift (I have always liked Dan Hartman's production on this, and in general.) 2) Foghat (1972) 1) Fool for the City And, of course, a big shout-out to "Foghat Live". Thanks, Pete!
Loved all of them, but I really have great memories of playing the Rock and Roll Outlaws cassette in my Dodge Tradesman Van repeatedly. The album opens with Eight Days on the Road and closes with Chateau Lafitte ‘59 Boogie, and every song in between is tasty, especially Dreamer.
1. Energized 2. Stone Blue 3. Rock N Roll Outlaws 4. Night Shift 5. Fool For The City 6. Girls To Chat, Boys To Bounce 7. Rock N Roll 8. Return Of The Boogymen 9. Boogie Hotel 10. Foghat Self Titled
1. Fool for the city 2. Night Shift 3. Rock and Roll Outlaws 4. Rock n Roll 5. In the mood for something rude 6. Energized 7. Stone Blue 8. Foghat 9. Return of the boogie men 10. Boogie Motel
We saw them on their 1st tour. At the Aragon Ballroom, Chicago. In this order > FOGHAT , FLASH( big hit was " Small Beginnings"), DR HOOK + MEDICINE SHOW, THE KINKS $5 .
what a tough job to rank 1-5 or so.... liked the singles 8 days on the road, blue spruce woman and step outside.... you know i saw them once or twice, right in front of rod price,......man, i was so awed who knows who the other band was......one of my faves.
Not familiar with their entire catalog....even though I saw them live,5 or 6 times post 1990. Thru lineup changes; they still REALLY delivered live! Dave Peverett & Roger Earl always enjoyable to watch & listen to. You've got the top three exactly right,Pete. The live album will always be a seventies classic that ANY rock fan can enjoy....think I'll put that one in the player right now🤘🔥🔥🔥🔥.
1. Fool For The City 2. Energized 3. Night Shift 4. Stone Blue 5. Rock 'n' Roll Outlaws 6. Rock 'n' Roll 7. Tight Shoes 8. Foghat 9. Boogie Motel 10. Girls To Chat, Boys To Bounce
hi, Pete was hoping you picked "Fool" my number 1 for sure. was wondering if you ever heard Nick Jameson's solo album titled "Already Free"? it's a really good and stylistically varied album, with hard rock, pop, a little r&b, a little jazzy feel here and there, great songwriting and great musicianship (he plays almost all the instruments himself).a little reminiscent of another Philly boy, Mr Todd Rundgren. it's on Spotify if you want to check it out. ✌️✌️
FOGHAT ... my Top 10 .... 1- Fool For The City 2- Energized 3- Rock N' Roll Outlaws 4- Rock and Roll 5- Stone Blue 6- Night Shift 7- In The Mood 8- Foghat 9- Boogie Motel 10- Tight Shoes well ... ENJOY ...
1. Energized 2. Fool for the City 3. R + R Outlaws 4. Stone Blue 5. Boogie Motel 6. Rock and Roll 7. Foghat 8. Tight Shoes 9. Girls to Chat 10. Night Shift-Foghat Live is overall their best album. Unbelievable live band. Go watch their live shows from late 70’s-early 80’s. Saw them twice in Detroit. Thought Night Shift was a big letdown but I really like Boogie Motel and Tight Shoes, which many don’t really care for.
Fool for the City just puts a big smile on my face. All ear candy for me. Song and album.
Growing up in the Midwest, I really appreciated Foghat for coming around many times to put on a great live act. One of the few to visit the smaller venues in the middle of the country. A hard-working band for sure.
FOGHAT RULES! FOOL FOR THE CITY alltime #1, ENERGIZED! ROCK & ROLL OUTLAWS! NIGHT SHIFT! Super Underrated BAND! One of the BEST of the 70s HARD ROCK!
Very nice rundown and narrative of Foghat.
FOGHAT!!!!! I had forgotten about them (terrible on my part I know, life, life in the way). What a great band and what great memories. Thanks for doing this one. GREAT JOB PETE and SOT.
My list: top 5:
5. Night Shift
4. R& R Outlaws
3. Fool for the City
2. Energized
1. Rock & Roll
This was the 1st band I saw live. They opened for Edgar Winter Group. Great show!
Great List! Always wished that Foghat Live was a double album.
There must be more songs in the vault. They should have been added to the CD as bonus tracks.
Totally agree with that. AC/DC(If You Want Blood), Blue Oyster Cult(Some Enchanted Evening), Judas Priest(Unleashed In The East) & Robin Trower(Live)are others that should've been double live albums.
Love Foghat. I grew up with their music in the 70s riding around with the boys drinking Stroh's beer, smoking pot, and popping 714s.
Always remember Jim Carey at an MTV awards show saying " Would it kill you to play a little Foghat?" Love that 😂
That was so funny, the entire speech he gave. The Foghat bit is still something that even after all these years, still makes me laugh when I think about it !
Great band and their music timeless.
Top 5 for me
1 Rock and Roll Outlaws
2 Energized
3 Fool For The City
4 Rock n Roll
5 Foghat
Can't go wrong with any of those albums in any order
Chateau Lafitte '59 Boogie
I think rock and roll outlaws is without a doubt foghats best album.
My favorite energized
One of those rare bands where EVERY SONG is great. Lo-Dave was one of my favorite songwriters.
Foghat was foremost a live band. Their live album is epic!
Just wish Drivin' Wheel was on it. Other than that, It's the bomb.
PVD Guitars we are in agreement
Few bands reached that level of boogie power live. Yes, you haven't really heard Foghat until you've heard them LIVE!!!
Just saw them tonight!😎🤘
@PVD Guitars.

Thank you for ranking the studio albums of Foghat.🎤🎸🎵🥁

Thanks for the top ten on foghat Pete, it brought back a lot of good memories and caused me to buy the cds I was missing from your top ten !

"Nervous Release" rockin' tune!!
In the early 90s Foghat toured several times. I saw them a lot and they were really great. Great boogie hard rock
Rod Price's nickname was "the bottle" and I always wondered if it was because of his slide playing or his drinking.😉

I love your take , for me the Rock n Roll album 1 Energized 2
Lonesome Dave era is the only Foghat... one of my fave bands over all these years....
Most definitely pete return of the boogiemen is a kickass cd .That has to be one of the best comeback cds ever.If any foghat fans havent heard it you must give it a listen. You wont be disappointed. LONG LIVE LONESOME DAVE & ROD PRICE.
3. Rock and Roll
2. Energized
1. Fool For the City
i have most foghat catalog 70's stuff on vinyl
Pity for you. Why do people like that warped, scratched shit that needs changing over every 20mins? Its 2020 man. Progress happens for a reason.
Rod Price was way underrated. My old band opened for them on their 1994 tour. (Return of the Boogiemen). Kings of the 8-tracks and 6-packs!! 🥁
He was known as one of the best slide players in rock and was hardly underrated!
Foghat Live is my favorite!!🎤🎸🎵🥁
Excellent work, as always. Still waiting for the ranked albums from Weather Report, which you promised 2 months ago. Something from Canned Heat in the future?
Not much of a Canned Heat fan. Weather Report will come eventually.
Unless I’ve missed it, I don’t think you’ve done a ranking albums show on them
Pete, definitely check out Family Joules and Under the Influence, both with Charlie Huhn fronting the band. Two strong recent albums.
"Chateau Lafitte '59 Boogie" from Rock n Roll Outlaws.. was a concert staple.. saw Foghat 6 or 7 times in the 70s and this song always brought the crowd to its feet.......can't understand why you forgot to mention this great song
Energized is #1 for me!
Stone Blue is my favorite. Midnight Madness is one of the greatest rock songs ever.
Yes.. it totally Jams!..
Stone Blue is also my favorite. I guess they didn't get on with Eddie Kramer though.
Midnight Madness is a great, great tune.
You're absolutely right on that.
4:35 I found out from Drummer Roger Earl recently that Todd Rundgren played the Piano on "Trouble Trouble"
Awesome since Todd Rundgren was also on Bearsville Records.
I had cassettes of Fool For the City, and Stone Blue back in the day. Those were the only two I ever had.
All ya need really.
Please ranks the albums of Manfred Mann Earth Band!
I like "Tight Shoes" too!!
Tight shoes is great! Its different but its great. I love 38 special and it feels similiar.
1) Fool for the City

4) Foghat (aka Rock and Roll)
5) Rock and Roll Outlaws
6) Foghat

My knowledge of this band stops abruptly after 1980's "Tight Shoes", so my list won't have anything more recent than that. All of these are worth a listen, even if there are a few too many cover tunes, in my opinion.
9) Boogie Motel
8) Stone Blue
7) Foghat (1973)
6) Tight Shoes
5) Rock and Roll Outlaws
4) Energized
3) Night Shift (I have always liked Dan Hartman's production on this, and in general.)
2) Foghat (1972)
1) Fool for the City
And, of course, a big shout-out to "Foghat Live".
Thanks, Pete!
I agree on the Live album. It was great but I was wondering where was the rest of it? They had plenty more tunes that should have made the album.
"Live Now, Pay Later" my favorite😀, along with Dixon's song.🎶
Loved all of them, but I really have great memories of playing the Rock and Roll Outlaws cassette in my Dodge Tradesman Van repeatedly. The album opens with Eight Days on the Road and closes with Chateau Lafitte ‘59 Boogie, and every song in between is tasty, especially Dreamer.
My top 5. Same as PETE. / just maybe NIGHTSHIFT slightly higher / but pretty close. Agree with his NO# 1.
Side one of Night Shift is flat out kick ass ball busting rock n roll !
From KINGPIN, it's as fresh as a Foghat concert. I liked them but never loved them, good list again Pete.
i just got into them…got a five cd collection & their back catalogue is pretty good
My top 3 is: 1= Stone blue, 2= Fool for the city, 3= Rock and roll outlaws.
cool! Foghat-Slow ride

We saw them on their 1st tour. At the Aragon Ballroom, Chicago. In this order > FOGHAT , FLASH( big hit was " Small Beginnings"), DR HOOK + MEDICINE SHOW, THE KINKS $5 .
what a tough job to rank 1-5 or so....
liked the singles 8 days on the road, blue spruce woman and step outside....
you know i saw them once or twice, right in front of rod price,......man, i was
so awed who knows who the other band was......one of my faves.
One of my favorite Foghat tunes is "Nervous Release" off the Boogie Motel album.
Don't know why it wasn't a hit!!??

Woo! "Slow ride, take it easy". I have "Fool for the City" album.
I guess your dog wanted to co-host the show.
hi, Pete was hoping you picked "Fool" my number 1 for sure. was wondering if you ever heard Nick Jameson's solo album titled "Already Free"? it's a really good and stylistically varied album, with hard rock, pop, a little r&b, a little jazzy feel here and there, great songwriting and great musicianship (he plays almost all the instruments himself).a little reminiscent of another Philly boy, Mr Todd Rundgren. it's on Spotify if you want to check it out. ✌️✌️
FOGHAT ...
my Top 10 ....
1- Fool For The City
2- Energized
3- Rock N' Roll Outlaws
4- Rock and Roll
5- Stone Blue
6- Night Shift
7- In The Mood
8- Foghat

Lest not forget the great "Step Outside" from Energized!
Fog hat live ,my first album I bought ,with money from recycling beer cans
