Walking Dead In Vancouver Downtown Eastside And Chinatown Crisis

  • Before the Pandemic, the Vancouver Downtown Eastside has faced many problems, including poverty, drug use, crime, homelessness, mental illness, vandalism and other problems. Since, the Pandemic, the situation has gotten worse. Recently, homeless people are living in an area where businesses are located.
Chinatown is located near the Downtown Eastside. Chinatown is having its share of problems, including buildings being vandalized, loss of local business and loss of tourism.
Recent reviews on Tripadvisor have been really negative about our city of Vancouver. People are advising tourist to avoid different areas of the city, including Chinatown.
"You have walking dead roaming the streets", agrees Jordan Eng, with one of the reviews on Tripadvisor, who compared people in the area to the "walking dead". Jordan Eng is the president of Chinatown BIA.
In my video, I'm saying the area has been "affected" by the Pandemic. In other other words, the Pandemic has made things worse. Some viewers seem to think I'm saying the situation has been "effected" by the Pandemic. In other words, it is the result of the Pandemic. I'm not saying this.

In Canada's downtowns, people, mainly able bodied men, approach me all the time asking for money, or even demanding I buy them food. I agree with you. I lived in Burnaby, Vancouver for 6 months, had moved there from the US thinking it would be a place I would call home after getting my green card. I realized it was mostly the white people who enjoyed the perks and rich business owners that had settled. Most of the foreigners who lived there, many friends of mine who left their countries and had been doing much better before thinking the grass is greener elsewhere, looked miserable.
My friends never seemed happy but decided to just deal with it even though they felt second class to everything. Some did it because they were too proud to admit making a mistake and leave. I had to swallow my pride and go back to the US. Eventually I got a better job than before I had left, became a citizen years later on the East Coast and did not regret leaving Vancouver, though I did enjoy spending time in Victoria Island.
Lesson I learned was the grass is always greener where you water it.

Co-workers who have started less than a year ago make 16.
Why? It makes me want to quit working and give up. But I just can't. I've been homeless before and I guess this is a bit better. Two Board members of the old Downtown Eastside Residents Assoc. actually LOST their houses when DTES imploded. It's a number of issues not clearly understood. When all the resident hotels filled up with people with FULL disability paycheques guaranteed by the govt, room rents were racked up, and if you were on/off the system or newly arrived in town, there was no place for you but the street. Those hotels, most privately owned, wanted that guaranteed money. Certain drug dealers and sellers INSIDE those hotels can't be touched: they're in wheelcharis and/or represent a certain community that you CANNOT criticize, or you're racist. So what "normal" people there are in those hotels are bullied, scared, and pushed around. The list of "issues" goes on and on.

Just a shame and a disgrace what has happened to our beautiful city. When I was younger, Chinatown was a cultural jewel; teachers took students there on field trips. Gastown had the coolest shops in town, bustling with tourists and locals. The Downtown East Side has long been Vancouver’s epicentre of poverty, drug use, and desperation, but I used to visit the area without a second thought, my greatest fear being asked politely by a bum for a cigarette. We need more support for people with serious mental issues; we need more treatment opportunities for people to kick drugs; we need more housing to give people hope and stability.

Back in the day even drug addicts could usually afford some shady apartment somewhere... now if you get addicted to hard drugs you're on the street. Cost of living is a big factor too... in Portland a studio apartment starts around $1,500 per month and you legally have to make a minimum of 3 times the rent to qualify... so $4,500 per month after taxes. There are a lot of types of jobs like blue collar work, restaurant workers, retail workers etc. who do not make this much money so they either have to find roommates to split the rent, try to find a house with a room available or move back in with family. Read an article that people in Portland making $100,000 per year are barely making it. That's why everyone is doing side hustles or working 2 jobs just to squeeze by. If you get into hard drugs and lose your job and don't have family to fall back on you're most likely gonna end up on the streets. It should be clear to all of us that something needs to change - a lot more affordable housing and homeless shelters would be a good start. A new war on drugs might also be a good idea.

These "poverty pimps" pull a HUGE paycheck and then just go home. That area DID experiment with outside toilets (Jimmy Pattison put up a kiosk at Main St. and the Greyhound station). There was NEVER any toilet paper!! But you have to do SOMETHING, and looking to govt. and society employees doesn't translate to getting "the concept" inside people's heads. Of course, my friend (Indian Johnny) started a DRY encampment and (of course) the city and cops shut him down. Be part of the solution, not part of the (entitled) problem. and then they get out of jail and go right back to the dope. They have been trying that for decades and it doesn't work. It got way worse in the early 90's when they shut down Riverview psychiatric hospital. Before that it was mostly skid row, drunks/homeless/prostitution. It was rough but nothing like today.
Now its mostly addicts who have hit rock bottom and the mentally ill who have no support or anywhere to go.
They have been trying to arrest their way out of it and all its done is clog up our justice system and jails. No matter how long they are in for once they are out its right back to the streets and the drugs to numb the pain of life.
30 years ago the Province washed it hands with housing the mentally ill and all that happened was they got hooked on the dope or taken advantage of by the hustlers who prey on the weak down there.
No matter how long you lock them up for the minute they are released they will want to be back down there or back on the drope. If you are on the dope you will end up there eventually.
They can do all the programs they want in jail, all the AA/NA meetings, forced detox/ forced rehab. It wont work. So do we do what most cities do and just play musical chairs with them, kick them out of one area and they migrate to another, destroy it, then the NIMBY's ( not in my back yard's) get vocal. They move them along and the cycle repeats its self.
Where do we build these new prisons/detox facilities for them? How do we staff them? Where do we get the resources to help them? Do we raise property taxes some more? More income tax? We are taxed to the hilt here already no government is going to survive if they try this out. There will be armys of people down 'on their behalf" there saying it's a community, it's their lives, it's their right. All the bleeding hearts will be down there with their hands out to the piggy bank saying we can help just fund us.
Its a Cancer that we have let fester for way to long. I don't have any idea's to help those who don't want help and will fight you every step of the way while you try to tell them its in their best interests to listen.

THIS IS A RESULT OF A WEAK SOCIETY. My friend lives in the city in the US and the homeless try almost daily to do this. He has a STRONG neighborhood where owners and renters are not afraid to confront these people and make them move on. He has a simple solution. The moment they start loitering and setting up camp, he or a neighbor walks over to them and tells them they have 12 hours to move on or they will make them move on. They give them a piece of paper explaining it as well. Every 24 hours, about 20 to 25 neighbors get together and go on a foot patrol together with a pickup truck slowly creeping in the street. They come up on a tent and they told them they gave them notice and to move now. If they will not move, everyone will pick up their crap and throw it in the pickup. If the homeless person puts their hands on them, they get a warning not to do it again. If it happens again, they beat the piss out of them. Simple. Done. Yea, it is extreme but there is no alternative. The police and city government will not do anything. Take back your streets.

You're mistaken. A lot of these people aren't here because of the pandemic. They're here in the DTES because of the lack of law enforcement in the area. People can do whatever they want without ramifications from cops. Even though cops patrol the area people are free to smoke crack, shot heroin, do drugs openly, sell stolen merchandise, etc. A lot of the tents are not homeless people, they are drug addicts from other neighbourhoods and even other cities who've come to set up their tents and have drug parties and just get high all day and night. Another issue is they come here because OPS an organization that keeps drug addicts addicted to drugs operates 8 locations on Hastings street alone. 8 locations on two or three blocks. In addition they set up tents just like drug addicts do where they invite people to come and get high on crack or heroin or fentanyl. The situation is reminiscent of the Tenderloin in San Fran and is only going to become similar to the Tenderloin with decriminalization of drugs. The issues are the result of city hall and city councillors choosing to build luxury condos rather than affordable and below market housing and then casting blame on provincial govt when it's the city creating the problem

Hi Dan! This is so sad to see what is happening to Vancouver. I'm in eastern Canada and we're starting to see similar problems here. I live close to Montreal and used to go to Chinatown often with my husband to grab ingredients at the grocery store there. There always been homeless shelters in the area, but since the pandemic more homeless are on the streets taking drugs in the open. The city do nothing and last Sunday night an homeless man was stabbed by another homeless man. There's so much violence and problems in Montreal now... 😢 It's sad because we try to avoid going there as much as we can now. Sorry for my poor english.

I stayed in recent hotel bldg, in Chinatown.
Chinatown has some vibrant, well patronized restaurants. But the strip of R. de la Gauchetiere has but 2 mostly vibrant blocks. The rest of this remnant of larger Chinatown and adjacent commercial area is in sad shape with closed restaurants etc. away from that, and it looks like a shelter nearby (on Rue Jeanne-Mance). A remnant of it is separated, being on the other side of highway, wedged down from Old City and also looks ready for redevelopment. Last old significant shop seems to have been a camera store.
A shelter or such was just off it, after the shops ended. I walked thru the outdoor plaza outside it on R. Jeanne-Mance, and looked like U paid them no mind, so they paid me no mind and did not get hassled. Only concerned on the inside. But I know where to avoid after that,
Note, not far along side streets near and a few blocks away from lace des Arts, up to Sherbrooke, large number of closed shops in fine old small commercial building looked ready for sale for demolition and redevelopment.

I visited Vancouver last year and went to Chinatown and it just wasn't the same, the homeless have totally ruined it and it was scary just walking back to my car. I've noticed Toronto and Vancouver Chinatowns back in the 90's were great places to walk around and do some shopping and grab a bite, but governments keep setting up homeless shelters and soup kitchens near every Chinatown in every major city, at least that's what I've noticed. When I first came to Vancouver, I had $50, and the DTES was a place with a lot of resources to help me survive. For the first year, I lived on Gore and Keefer. The area (and the building) was always very impoverished, and the worst part was around Hastings and Carrall. The nearby alleys were always grimier and sketchier, but less populated than the street for the most part. Now, it looks like everywhere is as populated as the Hastings segment between Main and Carrall, and at the same time grimier like the alleys. Sad state of affairs. And it's very sad for Chinatown. I saw recently that Gain Wah had been severely damaged by fire, too. I hope they can reopen soon. I sent a donation to help them out, because when I lived next to them, they sure helped me out a lot, too. Lovely people.
As to the DTES, so many things need to be done to help people there. Many of those things actually need to be done for everyone, including improved healthcare (including mental care), preventative measures to keep people healthy and striving in the first place, better safety nets, including some kind of a universal right to housing alongside with building good quality public housing for all. Then in regards to the DTES, harm reduction needs to keep happening, but also, such services need to be provided elsewhere so that the problem isn't as concentrated as that and the ratio of people with serious issues vs general population decreases. It's easier for 10 people to help 1 deal with serious issues than for 1 person to help 10 with serious issues.

I have quite an extensive experience with the Hastings culture as my mother, due to her early childhood traumas compounded by a toxic developmental environment, lived out most of her life trapped in this lifestyle. Its a very complicated situation when people end up here. A lot of it is childhood inertia that developed through factors beyond the individuals control at extremely vulnerable times such as abusive parents or step-parents, molestation, drugs and alcohol being a normal facet of life, etc. Sometimes they just end up with the wrong crowd and at the time they don't see it spiraling into this level of chaos; they try something one time and don't know they're susceptible to developing addiction whereas others may be able to try something once and then leave it alone. The variables go on and on. Therefore, I don't think there is a neat, pretty solution which adequately and comprehensively addresses it all simultaneously. I've just seen too much in my life and met too many of the people who live here to believe it's an easy fix. Nor do I think the government really has much power in preventing it, because from my experience the reason people are in this state goes far beyond economic factors. I've been inside SRO's my entire life and if you think socialized housing, which in Vancouver means cramming them inside old, rotting hotels infested with mites and bugs, is any type of a tenable solution, well, visit one and find out for yourself.
Anyways, that's my experience. What I would like to do, is ask what people think could actually be done about this? Why is this here and what could be done about it? I'd love to have an open discussion with anyone. I don't have any opinions which are so cherished that I can't be persuaded of another point of view. The problem is that it's very difficult of commit someone to psychiatric care against their will. They have to be a danger to society, a judge has to decide, psychiatrists have to agree, and so on.
Most mentally ill people aren't aware they need help, meds, and so on. Plus Canada closed many facilities and beds decades ago, so the system simply does not have the capacity. There is literally nowhere for these people to go, and this in a wealthy society. Add to that street drugs, alcohol, abuse. It's awful. I often think if people could be safely housed, it would help a lot. Sleeping properly, getting proper food, meds, being able to shower daily. It sounds simple, so why is it so hard?

@@saloninegi147 the problem with Canadian social housing is the lack of transparency to the public really. What you get in Canada is a whole lot of posturing without any real verification of results. Our social housing here may be among some of the most pitiful in the entire world. Welfare recipients are eligible to get into housing we call "Single-Room Occupancy" or "SRO" for short. What these amount to is: a decrepit, rodent and bug infested building from the early 1900's that instead of being redone was simply repurposed. I wish I took videos of these buildings when I would visit my mom but sadly I don't have any raw content. Generally these buildings are merely everything you see on the street in public except confined to a claustrophobic space where abuse, rape, drug-use, and all-around neglect is the dominant atmosphere. I can't even begin to describe the horror of these buildings. On my first visit, upon opening the door to my mom's floor, the first thing I was confronted with was a pile of human feces on a paper plate in the hallway and rats scurrying about openly. They are no solution, they merely move it from the streets to the hallways of a small building.

People, are generally good, and want to contribute in positive ways. Systems, however, can be bad, they can be really bad, in fact, so bad they are a cancer to society. We live in a world that is using a cancerous system known broadly as monetary-market economics. It puts a price tag on nature, demands infinite growth and consumption, and consolidates power into the hands of a small group of people because we give money power over us. We have agreed that money must dictate our survival. So some fat cat in a suit 1,000 miles away can make a decision like: No homes for the homeless (even though there are plenty of empty homes), and no food for the hungry (even though there is plenty of food in the grocery store and restaurants and we waste 40% of food before any human gets to eat it). Why to do they make that decision? Because the system reinforces those negative decisions. Poor people are worthless to a for-profit system. Why haven't people put two and two together?
The system is the sickness. We have ruling class vs working class and the only way out of this system is to acknowledge it is unsustainable, learn what a viable alternative would look like (Read: Natural Law Resource Based Economy) and stand up together with your fellow citizens of Earth and make it happen.

Minimum wage jobs like deli clerks and gas station attendees are jobs for high school kids and immigrants.
Why not invest in maybe developing some sort of trade skill or applying to obtain that qualification? This country is in desperate need of skilled workers. Why settle for a minimum wage job?

Can you give me an example of a skilled worker that this country is desperate for? Maybe I'll look into it. Keep in mind I do not have a hs diploma so my options are limited. I also have to work 5 days a week to survive so I don't have much spare time. I'd love to hear back from you though, maybe you can help guide me hahah

@@bldomain Thats because you havent put in an iota of effort to search for work. You expect things to just fall in your lap. You expect things to just be handed to you. You have to be willing to snatch the meat from the tigers mouth to feed yourself and your family. Only then will you come out of the sewage and find yourself in the promised land.

      你又冇本事,咁你就去溫哥華整乜呢,如果你喺香港可以攞綜援,冇地方住可以申請公屋咁又唔會變homeless 啦,我覺得你係攞嚟衰,!

The pandemic played virtually no role in the decay of this once great place. It’s the city leadership leading the city into the abyss…

We used to go Chinatown once a week, Newtown bakery was always a favourite. her Father was in the Chinese old folks home, in Chinatown, we moved him out of there as the area got worse. Sad to see it go downhill.
