"One last time...aim all guns at the Comet Empire...All of them." That and what occurred next I have never forgotten. What a classic. Thank you for making an old man smile. Be well.
As soon as we surface ... We attack!! Then that awesome music starts playing... 51 now and it excites me just as much as when I seen it as a kid. But then again space battleship has been part of my life since then, now with the new amazing Yamato 2199 series it's beyond epic!!
They went way overboard on the meaning of life theme. The story was a little disjointed. I'll also never understand why they keep drawing the characters like the can't find a barber to cut their hair and covering their eyes. It's amazing they can see. Even when they have their helmets on. It's ridiculous.
I remember watching star blazers in the late 1970's on my old black and white tv on the old UHF tv channel 68 I'm 58 years old and watching this video right now on saturday morning
Looking back, I think I got my love for the military, duty and honor by watching Star Blazers! Who would've thought a cartoon could have such an impact on one's life
6am every day for 2 seasons and never missed an episode.... My parents were divorced and dad already long off to work, so nobody had any friggen clue what I was watching. I distinctly remember watching this episode... not thinking the destruction of Gamilon episode could be outdone... But looking back on it all, this cartoon is so historically ridiculous and violent... And because it wasn't ever re-aired (at least where I lived), it gave off a real theatrical vibe that I didn't feel again until leaving the theater after seeing T2... If you can hunt down the unedited Japanese versions Nox does sacrifice himself and there are other deaths.
This was always my favorite episode ! but even as a kid , i knew something wasn't right. The whole set up and music suggested that knox sacrificed himself. I finally found out,(20 years later) that not only did Knox die ...but many more. AND that wasn't "spring Water" !!!
scott heim Youre right, Knox, Conroy, Dash and Orion died, but they didn't show it. And I think the reason for that is because it would have been too "disturbing" for American viewers, that's why they edit it out!
This warms my cold jaded heart to see this again after 30 years. One of the greatest moments in anime history, however well it's aged over the years. The scene with Knox still brings the feels...and I don't care what anybody says, he made it, dammit! On a side note, I can't decide if Knox sounds more like Moe from the Simpsons or Harvey Firestein, lol...
In our 20s (in the 90s) a friend and I always argued. With him saying Star Blazers was best and me saying Robotech was best. Now, in our 50s neither one will watch the other show lol. This is the first episode I've ever seen of Star Blazers and it actually looks pretty good.
Star Blazers was a pretty good English translation of Space Battleship Yamato, but due to the nature of the target audience, they felt the need to edit out any casualties... though even as a child it seemed pretty clear to me that the folks being killed were not just "robots"... and the three marines that were following our heroes but who magically disappeared after the ambush at 12:20 were obviously killed. And no, Saito (Knox) didn't "get out just behind you." He committed suicide when he activated the charges... and Kato (Conroy) died of his wounds upon landing aboard Yamato (Argo). And no, Zordar didn't take his daughter and the generals aboard the dreadnought... he left them to die. Just FYI. :D
@@wildstar145 That was very clever plotting and writing, because if the showrunners had NOT made a point of disabling the Wave Motion Gun in the previous episode, there would have been significantly less suspense in the Argo's confrontation with the Comet Empire. Without its plasma shield, the Comet Empire's Gatlantis Fortress would not have been able to survive a hit from the Argo's Wave Motion Gun. The WMG would have disintegrated it in ten seconds.
Even with the "Kiddie-fied cleanup", you can see that pretty much everyone who was part of the assault force that stormed the Comet Empire, DIED in carrying out the mission.
And also there was a version before that where he still left them behind, but Princess Invidia refused Zordar to take them, then changed her mind rather quickly when he started to leave.
I think that was the original SBY plot. The American producers of SB edited out a lot of the violence because the show in the US was meant for younger viewers than the original was in Japan.
To fire at Crl Ganz's flag ship at Pluto to prevent them from ramming each other, then pull the ship past them, and have his ship collide with an asteroid.
@Pete B died from wounds sustained in combat in the Comet Empire's hangar bay. He was protecting the planes while waiting for the others to come back. Lived just long enough to pilot his fighter back to Yamato before dying.
In a roundabout way, they acknowledge it isn’t the same guy in the little seen season 3, Bolar Wars, as that’s CORY Conroy, his brother, who just happens to look the same. The original Voltron did the same thing with Sven. It’s as though anime writers miss the characters they kill off so much they have a twin brother step in to take his place.
I love this scene! Now I get it’s a sci fi cartoon, but then and now the same thing bothers me. How could there be a n undamaged ship within a ship. When they destroyed the comet empires energy center, fully 25% of the CE sustains MAJOR damage, and then the Starforce unloads everything compounding the damage already don to the CE, sorry Zordars disproportionately huge battleship would have sustained significant damage. To me this is a pretty weak plot device.

The only thing good about the 2nd season reboot was the improved animation.
russell5078084 Agreed! To many andromeda’s!! Went way overboard and took to many liberties. Should have stayed true to the original comet empire..

Exactly. My favorite moment of the whole series. Go Star Force! Go!
As soon as we surface? Nobody fires a shot until they’re both safely in orbit. Even in the 24th century, combat is too risky to attempt during ascent.

OMG I loved this show! The drama and the music is so dang good!
one of the best scenes in animated history to me, the Yamato forcing the comet empire off our planet
I agree, even 40 years later when i see Argo come out of the water its like im 7 years old again
Greatest ever animated soap opera EVER

Funny thig is i just realized 40 years later Knox died and i was crushed.

“Resistance is futile”. I always knew the writers of Star Trek TNG ripped off star blazers like a muther.

Next to Johnny sokko and his flying robot this was my favorite after school show.
"Hurry up and get on the plane!" I love the US version but the original version is even better.

To be fair, nearly every Black Tiger buys it in the English dub. But I know what you mean.
Uno dei momenti più alti di Star Blazers
"Knox got out just behind you." uh, well, maybe smoldering chunks of him did.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.
That's the American version because they wanted it to be not as violent. However in the true Canon Knox died
He just tanked the damage.
Dash was mistaken. He thought the next plane out was Knox, but it was someone else.
It seems like a last minute decision to satisfy the censors. All visual cues suggest they intended to retain Knox’s death.
I always thought Zordar's plot to "destroy the universe" was a bit ambitious.
If the Wave Motion Gun were operational, it would be over in ten seconds.
270yis that’s what I saying
prior episode they stated the wave gun was heavily damaged when they rammed Desslock's ship when they pulled out the gun was damaged

There is a version of Starblazers where Zodar escaped leaving his daughter and two idiot generals behind to die in the exploding Comet Empire.
The so-called daughter was really his mistress in the Japanese animation!
I do always get a snicker when they say "Robot Tanks" and the like.
In the nasty edit she is shown climbing ladder, and Derek is climbing up right after her, saying "attack from the bottom, attack from the bottom"!
Where to get unedited version? I saw it years ago but can’t remember where. I know Knox, hardy, and conroy all died. I think dash too.
Knox stays back alone to blow up enemy's energy center. Armagedón's director might have coped this part of the Star Blazer2.
Earth defense general: starforce your our only hope
Me: starforce your our only hope now go whoop the comet empire's ass
They should have blasted it with the wave motuin gun when it took off
The Bismark!!!!
Never understood why they didn't just hammer them with the WMG once they stopped them.
WMG was damaged against Desslok in the episode before this.

Hehe nlove the thumbnail. Me and my freind well he did it and designed someone after that character. And he hates this show so much hehe.
Why is Invidia not the same color as her father?
Because in the original Japanese version, she is his mistress....
The U.S. version edited out Conroy's death. In the original, he died just as the plane landed on the Yamato's hangar deck.
OptimusWombat and they also knox got out
@Pete B died from wounds sustained in combat in the Comet Empire's hangar bay. He was protecting the planes while waiting for the others to come back. Lived just long enough to pilot his fighter back to Yamato before dying.
