Hi Matt I love your videos always entertaining as usual,I’m the proud owner of a 530i individual with only 132 kms not miles because I’m from Australia ,so far it’s the best car I’ve ever owned. These cars are surprisingly easy to work on and very reliable due to their excellent build quality.
Never heard of Hartge, thanks for the education. Still a classy looking interior even after 21 years. BTW I like the feature of a "wee ashtray" in the back, saves from having to stop for a pee at the services!
How can the E39 still look so good (exterior and interior included) nearly 24 years after launch - my Dad traded in his Vauxhall Omega CD for a Calypso Red 523i SE in 1997 and it was such an occasion - we had a BMW! It even had a car phone! I thought it was amazing - that was until his 993 arrived soon after to accompany it and all was well with the world. The 90’s were a great era for cars!
Hartge also did their own version of the Mini in the early 2000s. Got to drive one back in the day, and for me it was a better car than the in house Cooper and Cooper S. Sad to hear that this company no longer exists, they created some really awesome cars in their heyday.
That 2.8 straight six is a gem. I had a fully-loaded 328i SE auto in dark blue with maroon leather seats that was previously owned by a Kuwaiti lady. Every conceivable option was specced on it. It was a joy to drive, although servicing was not on the cheap side.
Look into the cup holders that fit into that spot in front of the cup holder,/under where the cupholders are when they are open. Just search aftermarket e39 cupholders or cupholder insert. They work sooo much better and can just be removed if you want the factory look or for resale if someone didn't want them...
That's one very special motor car. Not a big BMW fan, but that is beautiful. Great review as always Matt. Thank you. (Really enjoyed your 'Rover' chat with HubNut as well.)

But I’m so happy I’ve got my Rover 75, it’s a 2005 MK2 Facelift and it’s a Top Spec Connoisseur SE, I’m so happy I own a 75 Connie and it’s a 1.8T. I still cherish and love my 2002 Rover 25 Impression 1.4L and running it till July and then the 75 that magnificent 25 has never let me down and I’ve done 7,500+ Miles in it and learnt to drive in that car and spending my first year of driving since last July as a full driver and I always knew they’re were excellent cars since I was little, 7 months younger than me and 18 in less than a month beats any 2020 Focus or Astra for me and One day I aspire to own a Rover 75 V6 with my 1.8T and Possibly my 25 and then a V8. I’m also a Massive Jaguar Enthusiast as well as a Rover Enthusiast and Would love to own a Jaguar one day possibly a First Generation XF which I love the Most a V6 or my ultimate Jag the XFR, I also love many other jags such as the F-Type, XK, XJ, XE and F-Pace, I’m also very fond of the S-Type too especially the Facelift but not as much as the Rover 75. I want to also own a Classic Rover one day, The P6 possibly Life on Mars and Inspector George Gently got me loving the P6 even more than I already did. I know where they got the Rear seat design from on the Rover 45 it was the P6 because they look exactly a like.
The last true beautiful bmw era, e39, e38 and e46 were truly the turning point. All beautiful cars. Modern bmws don't do anything for me, genuinely rather a new e39
So Stone Cold Classics have been right through it to make it look as good as it could possibly be? Look at the state of the steering wheel leather and the plastic trim on the armrest. Is that mileage genuine? This car sold for approx £4000 on ebay. Presumably bought by Stone Cold Classics, that's some mark up.
That is the best genuine M steering wheel that could be found, yes it was something like that on eBay but he has spent far more than that restoring it to this condition
You mentioned the engine having the older intake manifold for better flow where the pics shown in the vid are not, the engine in this car has the the M52TU, the manifold mod you mentioned was only done on the earlier M52...just so you know!
M54B25 manifold is 10% more volume than M52TUB28 manifold. and M54B30 is 20% more volume. With 3.0 manifold you make more on top end, but Hartge opted for M54B25 manifold to limit the loss of torque in low end.
@@idokwatcher2062 yes understood I’m aware of all that but maybe I misunderstood, he did say they used the inlet manifold from the old 2.5 inline 6 which in my mind would be the M50 inlet which is completely different.

this is very specific, but I’ve never seen an e39 with no seatback map pockets, even with those seats. I wonder what’s up with that? Were map pockets an option? Also the rear cup holders are a novelty
The stiff throttle is because the throttle cable is worn out, it's very common on BMWs of that era. Its a cheap part even from the stealer and very quick and easy to fit, a must as the throttle should be smooth and controllable.
As someone with a degree in German, it is pronounced Hartgeh, I am afraid.... Why must you keep tempting me with these high quality luxurious saloon cars in dark blue with beige leather interiors, Mr Richardson? Aaarghh!

Another great video. You said the standard engine had 206Nm of torque, did you mean ft/lb, or is it lb/ft. The standard engine had 280Nm of torque. For years I wondered why BMW replaced the 2.5 with the 2.8 with a gain of 1hp. Finally found out it was the torque going from 245Nm to 280Nm at lower revs. Stone Cold Classics have an interesting stock list, that Peugeot estate could be a good test. I really should stop looking at them in case I’m tempted to buy something. 🙂
The figure I found was 206 lb/ft @ 3500rpm for the standard 2.8, which is about 280 Nm, must have got the measurements mixed while driving. Thats why I normally do those bits by the engine!! I was about to drive that Pug last week when we shut down, hope it doesnt sell during lock down!
Is there a different format to English car reviews besides the obvious .With people that do not worry about mechanical wear and panick about internal rear mirrors but dont use external ones and insist on rear wiper are we driving backwards or are you doing something wrong?
Because safe driving means being aware of everything around you at all times, my driving instructor also taught Advanced Driving and I was taught to check all the mirrors at least every 10 seconds to have total situational awareness. Is a bike under or overtaking? Is a police car coming up fast? And with bigger window frames on new cars tight manoeuvring, particularly in the dark or rain is hard without these
They add class to the car, and they stick to the rims colour. Alpina's BMWs also have them, usually they are not good, but on those cars they definately have some charm.
I watched this video with a tear in my eye, the H5 is close enough to the E 39 523i that I owned for me to get nostalgic - beautiful car, but the least reliable I have ever owned. Sad - I still wish I had it (with enough money to keep it running).
