Its like Netero considered all of this with Meruem but purposely stopped himself. Around when he noticed the teetering, he ends the thought by saying he has to end the fight before his heart wavers. Its possible the king could change... but the potential risk is insane. He also said something like whichever way Meruem sways.. the end result is the same. He'll slaughter a shit ton of people

@@SolidSnake240 Strong agree. You go the HxH subreddit and there a lot of people that think Netero is a villain. They miss the nuance of the show that yes Meruem is capable of change, but he's also capable of global genocide and so far at this stage he's teetered towards the latter. He's already killed countless people at this point, Netero is doing what must be done to prevent many more from dying. Meruem even tells Netero that he'd spare him for being special. But as Netero points out, sparing a few isn't a kindness. Its still killing most people on Earth.
What is an acceptable number of human deaths for it to suddenly not be ok for Meruem to have the chance to "figure himself out"? HxH is brilliant because it gives all of these shades and complexities to characters and a lot of fans proceed to look at it black and white and willfully ignore all of the nuance built in.
Also, Netero doesn't even have a say in the big side of things.

Carter's sympathy for Meruem is spot on with the themes and messages of the arc. A lot of this arc is showing these monstrous ants turning human and our human protagonists acting like monsters, crushing new life that was open to diplomacy. The themes in this arc are too many to name, but a lot of it has to do with humanity and examining different facets of humanity with an extreme and impossible situation like the ants. These hyper-intelligent beings that quickly are showing signs of humanity overcoming their monstrous instincts, (except maybe Pouf, interesting considering his personality and design started the most human-like) and have only been alive for a month at most.
Netero did not want to talk to Meruem. He really, really wanted to fight him.
He has passion for 1 vs 1 fights and martial arts, and was excited when he learnt about the King's power. He is thankful for this opportunity.
Netero is also conflicted.
On one hand he wants to talk it out like meruem proposed, but since the end result doesn't depend on him anyways and he isn't sure of the truth about the King's intentions and his wavering NAture between Ant and Human, he'd rather fight him.
AND DURING combat he also comes to the realisation that maybe in the first time in LONG years, he can fight to his fullest, to reach the Pinnacle of Martial Arts, the Peak of Power he sought for so many decades.
The Nature of Nen is to evolve and change, and Nen fighters continously evolve through their fights and interactions with one another, since Nen is Aura, and Aura is practically bearing your Soul in the open.
A competent Nen user would actually be able to feel and read the opponent Nen and ironicly learn more about them, than themselves knew about.
Just like How Youpi learned about Himelf AND his Opponents.

19:48 I had the same opinion before, but the problem is not really intelligence. It's more of a value system issue. He doesn't value human life the same way we do, and there's no telling whether he will in the future or not.
However, the main problem is that we're betting the planet on this conversation. It's too risky not to put him down while he's at his weakest. This would be true of a human or an ant.
Anyway, I love villains like Meruem. They do things for good reasons but in ways that most people won't agree with (e.g. Thanos). On the flip side, Megamind had the worst motivations ever, but then had the biggest character development ever.
Not even all humans agree that human life has value, so expecting something other than human to comprehend/agree is a longshot.
Don't remind me of the abomination that is Megamind 2.. they ruined such a good movie

I don't think that Gon is being smarter than usual here, he is just way more focused. As Pouf said, he has the strongest will. He has always had crazy senses and intuition, but now he's in a flow state. The boy hasn't missed a beat since his eyes changed during the countdown.

id recommend Parasyte the Maxim or Code Geass. same darker/heavier tones like death note but much much more action packed, esp the former. yall should try 1 ep from different recommendations like the big 3 you did (evn tho IMO big 3 is Naruto, OP, and DB,not bleach, hueco mundo is such a huge chunk of the show for nothing happening)
OP is the best because it is completely diff from other anime in that it invests in the amount of characters and locations and their relations to eachother, which it is able to do with so many episodes, naruto kinda eh'd me out when i realized narutos "fighting 'style'" loop, db has just a very goofy power scaling that is always FIGHT THIS DEMON OF PEOPLE, now fight THE DEMON OF EARTH, now the DEMON OF THE GALAXY type shit, always a bigger fish and its just fighting, losing, training cycled. thats the flaw of those being focused on the characters story instead of the worlds story, whereas in OP people can be split up, plans get completely altered in entirely unexpected ways, just gotta get through the start with the shitty animation fr and besides that it gets solid
I think you guys are missing the point about this chimeras, the three royal guards were born with a purpose just like the king, they have a "human being" side and an "animal/insect" side, they have the ants instincts, so they are doing their best for the king, as you can see the guards got their own personalities, but they will always follow the king, no matter what, so the problem stands with Meruem, He's like a bipolar narcissist with a killer instinct, he knows he's the King, an all mighty being that's supposed to be on the top of the world, we saw him having a soft spot on komugi but then he started thinking about killing her, that's beacuse it's in his DNA he's born like that.
Netero knows that Meruem is shifting from both sides, and thats dangerous.
Just imagine a dude that powerful, one day being all good and chill, and the next day destroying an entire country

This is why this arc is so great. it really makes you think and it's fun to discuss the details in it. It's totally valid to feel bad for Meruem but also, I'm surprised no one's pointed this out, but although Meruem wanted to talk, he's basically said that he'll decide who's worthy of living and dying. He deemed Netero as one of the people who's worth sparing, to which Netero replied... "You'll spare ONLY ME?". Which means he can't risk it because the others will be in danger of being killed by Meruem. Who's to say who will be judged as worthy or not? That's too unpredictable and so he needed to fight him and stop him. If he sat and talked to him, he might be swayed because Meruem's developing positive human traits. But he was also just a baby, he was born only recently and don't really have a bigger grasp of how the world is, how humanity is. He's only seen a glimpse of it and he was still a very dangerous threat.
Ahh I love this anime. Can't wait for the next episode's reaction :)

Little known fact: The term "got clapped" actually came from Netero's absolutely biblical beatdown on Meruem.
Netero is great. His shirt say "Kokoro" which means heart. He is talking about gratitude, which comes from heart and he is doing heart with his hands.
Normally, when character associates with heart symbol, it's usually cutesy, lovey dovey, idol kinda cahracter. But in Netero case, it's symbolic of soul.

I kind of agreed with Carter when I first watched the show too, but you gotta realize that if the King can so easily teeter to the side of a human, he could just as easily teeter back to a violent tyrannical Ant, and it could happen when there’s nobody there to stop him. Netero and the entire squad put their lives on the line to give him this once in a lifetime opportunity to 1v1 the king before he’s too strong for anyone to stop. The risk is too high not to take him out right now. And even if he does stay more on the human side, it doesn’t guarantee it’ll be the good aspects of a human. No human should have as much power as the king either

Yep. Nen user's nen powers come from something that is meaningful to the person who wields it. Like hisoka's bungee gum, kurapika's chains, killua's lightning or Netero's prayer. Netero believes in thankfulness, believes in praying from his heart.
