    Point 3 is actually a mistake on Rowling's part. In at least three instances it is quite heavily implied, if not to say stated that Hermione is light-skinned and probably caucasian.
    1) In "Prisoner of Azkaban", when Harry is reunited with Hermione, it is noted that Hermione visibly tanned over the summer, after her vacation in Southern France. This would imply that Hermione regular skintone is rather light, for it to be this noticable.
    2) Again, in "Prisoner of Azkaban", we have the following allusion to a light skin colour for Hermione. In Chapter 21, Hermione's Secret, page 293, we find the following phrase: "Hermione's white face was sticking out from behind a tree." While this is a result of the fear and anxiety she is feeling at that moment in time, when phrased like this, it is easy to assume that her fear makes her look even paler than usual. Which in turn would mean, she is pale-skinned usually.
    3) In "Half-Blooded Prince", Chapter 5, "An Excess of Phlegm", we find the heaviest implication that Hermione is in fact pale of skin: "But when Harry arrived downstairs ten minutes later, fully dressed and carrying his empty breakfast tray, it was to find Hermione sitting at the kitchen table in great agitation, while Mrs Weasley tried to lessen her resemblance to half a panda." Seeing how they were trying to cover up a black eye, and seeing what a panda looks like, such comparison only makes sense if Hermione is indeed white.
    Personally, I don't give a shit how the theater writer decided to cast her, I'm all for artistic freedom and freedom of interpretation and if Rowling would simply have stated that she has no problem with said casting, I wouldn't have even bothered giving it a second thought. But saying that the novels never alluded to Hermione's skin color is nonsense.

    • @exitpursued6690
      @exitpursued6690 5 ปีที่แล้ว +108

      AGREED. Rowling also specifies every time a character is black (Lee Jordan, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Dean Thomas, etc.). So why not do this EVER for Hermione, who appears hundreds of times more than those side characters?
      I'm all for artistic freedom, too. No problem in casting a black actress to play a character previously described as white, especially if the character's race doesn't matter to her arc and story. But pretending that she hadn't written Hermione as white made me think a lot less of JKR.

  • @G1Bryce

    Actually Hermione is described several times as having white features, especially her eyes. She could be black, but it was JK Rowling's intention for her to be white when writing the books. But there is nothing wrong with portraying Hermione as black or thinking of Hermione as black if you want to... that definitely is not being racist toward white people. Hermione's skin was never directly specified at first, so many people assumed her to be white. And if Angelina Johnson or Dean Thomas' skin color had not been specified, they probably would assumed to be white too. The fact that people immediately assume every character to be white unless specified is an underlying problem in writing (although JK Rowling later eluded to Hermione being white by referring to her paleness, she could have been any other race when first introduced).

      In my opinion, she was white this was just something that they came up with later for the reasons that I said and she went along with it because why not she couldn't really respond and say "no she was white it can't be a black actress" it's not like she could say that

      I've never seen the cursed child play and I'm not racist or anything but you've got to admit it is kind of strange the actress who played Hermione was black, especially considering they tried very hard to make the players look like their movie-counterparts.

    why would people only know that Voldemort and Harry are distant related because Rowling has told them after the books were already out? It´s said in the books that Voldemort was a distant relative of Cadmus Peverell and Harry of Ingotus Peverell. I find it more interesting that Harry is related to Salazar Slytherin.

      Agreed. It's not a racist thing. It's about keeping characters consistent. It'd be just a strange to me if she were original cast as black all these years and was suddenly now white. I'd have the same issue with it. The only difference is that people would cry racism when they don't here because of the double standard. It seems to me this was done as a political statement.

    • @TrollBot.
      @TrollBot. 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MoonstonePearl21 Well I disagree. I think your white guilt is showing and though you say it has nothing to do with racism, you do express some light undertones of it. Because for one, J.K. never confirmed Hermione was white, and in the books it never stated she was white and in fact it heavily implied she wasnt white either. You also seem to forget that J.K had this set in stone waaaaay before the books developed, so NO it wasn't a political statement, its just you projecting your hate towards political correctness and your distaste for liberals. Anyone who isnt bothered by this can read through your sugar coating, but what ever I guess. Join the bandwagon I guess lol

      The book stated she was white several times:
      When Hermione and the Wesleys went to the bookshop? (not sure which shop it was) They met Mister Malfoy who asked if Hermione was one of Arthurs and Mollys children. Why would he ask that if she was black? Two white people don't have black children. So she must have been white.
      After a vacation she came back with tanned skin and lots of freckles. If a black person comes back from a vacation in a sunny country they are usually not described as tanned (normally their skin color doesn't change that much)
      "To Harry’s surprise, Hermione turned a very deep shade of pink at these words." Black people blush but they don't turn pink.
      Hermiones mother is described as a pale brunette with green eyes. So we know her mother is white. Hermione could be mixed at best.
      Emma Watson is a white actress. J.K. Rowling proved of her and never corrected anyone in the years the movie was filmed. So she approved of Hermione being white.
      I think Hermione being black is great but you have to understand that people are confused at first. We thought she was white now she is suddenly black that i confusing. Nothing more.

    If Hermione's skin color is never addressed in the books (honestly, I don't recall anyone having a designated skin color), why didn't they find someone of mixed heritage to play her...because it didn't come to matter until they cast a black actress to play her in the stage play. Why was Lavender Brown, who WAS a young black girl in the first two movies, suddenly transformed into a blonde, blue eyed, white girl for Ron's love interest? That is relevant in the context of the books/movies.

    • @HyouVizer
      @HyouVizer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Lavender Brown in the books was white, but never described. so they just casted a black girl for her, then in a later book its revealed she's white, so they got a white girl to recast her.

      So keep her black in the casting as a deviation from the source material, instead of suddenly changing her to be white, unless there's a major plot reason to do so (i.e. she gets badly sunburned, her character's history in northern European nobility becomes important, etc).

    I love Snape’s character. I mean sure he did bad things and all but that’s what makes him great. It’s not like he’s perfect or anything though he’s the perfect mixture of hero and villain. That makes him stand out above all other characters. Plus his troubled past might have attributed towards his emotional resentment towards some characters but even with his flaws, he managed to be courageous and bold towards the end of the series. And sure he got jealous and angry sometimes and even leaned towards the dark path but he came back to do the right thing every time; his above mentioned qualities are some of the most common. His ordinary qualities are in fact the reason that he’s outstanding.

    • @br3annand3rs0n
      @br3annand3rs0n 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I enjoy him as a character because he is enigmatic throughout the series and is one of the most flawed and interesting characters in the whole series. However, I don't consider him outstanding as a person. I have no problem with people who do, I guess it all comes down to what stands out most for you, the reader. I can't get past his years of verbal abuse and cold anger towards children, let alone how incredibly mean he was to Harry and Neville specifically. Yeah, his home life was seemingly terrible, and the girl he "loved" (to me it seems more like he was infatuated with her, but again just my opinion) ended up with his bully and was then killed by the very group he joined to feel like he belonged, BUTTTTTT I feel like he had every opportunity to turn over a new leaf or gain perspective through the things that happened to/around him, but he didn't. He stayed bitter and angry and cold. Circumstances mean a lot, but they're not an excuse when you're that old and taking personal responsibility is more meaningful to me.

    You know, I feel like JK thinks that she can make up things about the wizarding world just because she's written the series. Yes, I know this sentence seems kinda crazy, but everyone knows that Hermione is white. I have no problem with black people, if that's what u think, but JK Rowling wrote about Hermione's "pale skin" and also her "white skin" multiple times throughout the series, so saying that she never made any reference to her skin colour in novel is just bs. And pale and white skin can show that a character is afraid, but it also proves that Hermione Granger is WHITE. JK can't make everything up just so people think she's a really great person (which she naturally is, I'm sure). She can't rewrite what has been written. To have written so many wonderful books, I would have expected her to actually have given some thought into what information she gives us on the wonderful world that she created. And I'm not overreacting, guys, I just don't like when people lie (or do anything alike).

      The problem with Dumbledore being gay is that it was handled poorly. It is not mentioned once in the books and most people didn't notice on their own. But a bigger issue is that Rowling didn't allow Dumbledore any relationship after Grindelwald. If it was no big deal to be gay in the wizarding world then it would have been completely normal to have same-sex relationships. Instead Dumbledore is not allowed another romance beyond his first. There are no other mention of same-sex coupling in the books. During the Yule ball it would have been the perfect moment to show inclusion. But nothing. All pairs are opposite sex and not one boy tries to ask Harry. So I don't buy Rowling's pandering when she didn't make any effort to properly include lgbt elements.

      I mean... Rowling probably just wanted points for being "so progressive". Many people will never even know about Dumbledore being gay unless they come across it on the internet. There was never any hints to Dumbledores sexuality in any of the books.

      The personal lives of the teachers were not discussed at all in the books (except Snape's at the end, which was a crucial point). Otherwise there would be 70 not only 7 books. Sooo, really, I believe it was not necessary. Perhaps she just didn't think of all these aspects when writing, because it was not the point of this story. Maybe some more "hidden" messages would be fine, but the book was full enough with everything to put in "unnecessary" info that Harry didn't really need.

It's inconsistent and confusing. It's different for stage shows because a lot of different people play the same role. I agree. I don't like how this was done. Honestly I don't think JKR has even read her own freaking books at least not recently. Hermione is very clearly pale-skinned with buckles and said over and over again. The only time her skin tone is mentioned as being Brown is after summer and friends with her family at which point she would probably have a skin tan just like any other Anglo-Saxon red-haired girl.
    I'm sure the actress who plays Hermione in the stage play is a lovely person but the simple fact of the matter is that this is a British book and there are very few people in the UK prior to to the year 1990 who would not have been a pale skin complexion. The primary influx populations were from India and other parts of the former Empire now I could see her one of these parents possibly being part Hindi a several of generations back on her having a perhaps more Asian looking face but her skin complexion would still be very pale. The books popularity in America and the racial b******* that happens over here as the reason JKR said that her mind wasn't necessarily White when her rice and freckles were clearly established to begin with.

That's what she (somewhat) did with Harry and Ginny. It was pretty damn clean Harry and Hermione over time had really meshed, gotten close and could easily be a couple. She ripped that apart with Ron because she forced the characters. Now, Ginny was well established to like Harry so no issue on her half. But Harry never really cared beyond "best friend's sister" so him liking her is what I can't believe.

    in the case of Hermione and her race, JK might have not say that Hermione was white but in third book (the prisoner of azkaban) it's mentioned she had gotten a tan during the holiday.

      I still can't believe they threw her into the fire like that and are currently speaking of her as if she was some villain lol, truly amazing, i have no idea how people put up with Twitter, it's literally all the worst things humanity can be concentrated in one place, it's just hate on top of hate all day all night.

    There is a german Wizarding school called "Stroheim".
    They use very much Muggel technologies, because they think german science is the worlds finest.
    This is also a difference between the british and german magic rules.
    In the UK you are not allowed to have magically transformed muggel technology.

    I am really not sure why people have an issue with Ron and Hermione ending up together. They had chemistry from book one. They basically are the couple from every romcom ever- start out fighting like dogs and ending up together. Any potterhead would have seen that one coming. Plus had she put together harry and Hermione that would have been another great male-female friendship sacrificed on the alter of romance. Ron and Hermione were just never as great friends as Harry and Hermione were. And I am glad she did not ruin that. Plus Harry had a type- tiny and fiery. Both Cho and Ginny were like that. I thought JKR's initial intuitive take on these relationships is perfect. She should stop overthinking them.
