The last Genesis album with Peter Gabriel. At the end of the song he references the song 'On Broadway' made popular by The Drifters and more notably George Benson. Lovely reaction.

Yes. The title track is simply the opening exposition for the entire complex narrative that is the album. Along with the way, it's also a great read with lots of allusions and amusing wordplay by Gabriel, who wrote the lyrics. "Broadway Melody of 1974," "The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging," and "It" (the final track) are good examples.

There is a superb TH-cam video by Nathaniel Barlam. It is called The Lamb Lies down On Broadway Illustrated - Complete. A lot of the early progressive rock is sort of like classical music, in that they outline various musical motifs, and revisit them, and expand on them at various points in a multi-movement piece of music. They often present variations on a theme. Yes does this, Emerson Lake and Palmer does it. Genesis does it. It's a concept of composition that many of them shared.

Glad you got another taste of "The Lamb". Genesis remained a prog band for at least a couple of LPs after Peter Gabriel departed. They are both worth hearing: A Trick of the Tail, and Wind & Wuthering. Phil Collins is singing lead on both.
If you're interested in the range of music at the time, the English bands usually considered the disparate pillars of (late 60s and) 70s prog rock were Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Genesis, and Jethro Tull. Other bands were making similar music to some of these around the same time, but these five can illustrate the range that there was then in English prog.
Of course, when Peter Gabriel left Genesis after "The Lamb" tour, he spent some time working with Robert Fripp, of King Crimson; Gabriel also worked later with Kate Bush, who had been discovered by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd; and other music projects evolved that involved cross fertilizations of a musical sort amongst different musicians coming from different bands.
If you are willing to try slightly obscure art-rock, rather than prog, I'd suggest that you check out the live recording by the band 801 (including Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera, who had played together earlier in Roxy Music) of The Beatles classic, "Tomorrow Never Knows".

That said, I think you guys should listen to the British band Camel. Even if you don´t have the time to react to them in the channel, I think you would enjoy their music very, very much. Cheers.

React to King Crimson "Starless"!!! or really, any Crimson, preferably 21st Century Schizoid Man, Epitaph, In the Wake of Poseidon, The Lizard Suite (23 minute epic!) LArks Tongues in Aspic Parts 1 and 2, Fracture, Fallen Angel. Anyone of those, but really, just do Starless because its the best song of the rock era.

The music is very theatrical....you can almost feel the stage movements, the footlights dimming and the warmth of the spotlight on him at the 4:45 break... I love that you guys not only appreciate a variety of music, but you GET IT! I know you also like to explore new/current bands as well as these legends (whom we mercilessly shove at you)... I can imagine it's overwhelming to try to keep up with new stuff when there's such an extensive and rich back catalog to dive into.

The amazing emotional highs you're getting from their music are also in their guitarist Steve Hackett's early solo albums. Which is why I'm going to keep requesting his instrumental song "Spectral Mornings" . The first time I heard it I almost passed out from emotional bliss at one point. I know you two will love it.

And they would perform it complete with costume changes. As a music family, we’re trying to request more from side 1 in order. Def need tracks 2 & 3 together. Yay! 🤪

The concept album to end all concept albums. The album must be followed from beginning to end in order and you should get familiar with the story you are listening to to fully appreciate its brilliance. The story was included on the inside of the double album. That album filled a quarter of my life under headphones so far and I still put it on from time to time after all this time being in my late 50's and all.

Awesome reaction guys. Great Canadian Genesis tribute band called: The Musical Box out of Montreal. They tour the world. Worth checking out if they come to your town. The Farm aus Deutschland is also very good. Next song I would suggest is Firth of Fifth by Genesis from SEBTP. Germany's Sina Drums (on TH-cam) also does a fantastic job on that song. You get a good feel for the complexity of Phil's drumming.

For the piano opening of this title track, Tony Banks wrote the part to be played so fast that no human could play it. Therefore, he was forced to invent a new method of playing the instrument: one hand directly over the other, each hand playing chords around the other's fingers. You have to see it in a Live video to believe it.

Hi I am really enjoying your reactions to Genesis, Yes etc.. I agree with the comment by TrevRockOne because of the concept storyline throughout the album. But some of the songs
can be listened to on their own if you keep in mind all the tracks are linked. Such as The Lamb lies down on Broadway, In the Cage, Carpet Crawlers, Counting out Time etc... Some of the instrumental tracks such as Hairless Heart can easily be listened to on its own. Although that one leads and flows into Counting out time. In fact later on the band kept such songs as The Cage
and Carpet Crawlers, The Lamb in their live sets as they individually stand out and work well live. THANKS Gerald

Nick...for prog rock, make that "Genesis, Yes, Renaissance (PLEASE react to more of theirs!), Rush, Pink Floyd, Kansas, Tull, ELP - and please, defo Marillion! Fish devotees will disagree, but the whole of the album "Season's End" is just brilliant, and "Berlin" is one of my favourite tracks ever. And the hell with King Crimson - their dungheap label are blockers - clearly don't want any new fans. But I still struggle to see past Genesis as my favourite band, even after 50 years! ps Again, LOVING your reactions! Love you two!

Glad to see you doing this song. A little disappointed that you didn't go on to the next song (which leads directly into the third song) - I'd have loved to watch that reaction.
The real dividing point in Genesis isn't Peter Gabriel's departure, it's Steve Hackett's. The first two albums they did with Phil Collins on vocals were very good; it was only after Steve Hackett left that they shifted, essentially, to a whole different genre.

  • @hasltisl

Please look into either a Patreon account or Google drive or Vimeo for blocked videos. You can put a link in the description that directs us to the video (if it gets blocked or you know it will). I know you’re so busy, but eventually that might help. Plus, with the Patreon account, some of us might become patrons with a monthly donation. Another reactor channel has over 4000 patrons in their Patreon account. At $1, $3, $5 per month, that adds up. They recently started doing a music-related movie once a month for the $5 donation so that was incentive for patrons to jump into the $5/month tier. That can be $10k - $20k a month. Plus, you can still make some blocked videos free and offer extra tracks in Patreon. Just a thought. 💖🤪 You’re growing quickly! Congrats.

There are a bunch of album retrospective interviews scattered over youtube. Its interesting that this album is considered the height of their creativity but at the same time was the depth of their enmity between Peter and the rest of the band. Peter wrote the words; the band did the music.
They were all at the top of their performances. Definitely some of Phil Collins best drum work!

Thanks for that! The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is my favourite Genesis album but I can easily forgive you for not wanting to take on the whole thing. It is quite an epic four sides of vinyl and it has quite a confusing story running throughout. If you wish to take on a couple of earlier songs, I would recommend "Firth of Fifth" or "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight" from Selling England by the Pound, or maybe "The Musical Box" from Nursery Cryme. I'm sure you will like all of those songs. 😎

"The Lamb" was intended to be a Broadway production. It is a complete operetta meant to be played as an entire show. They were so far ahead of their time. I saw them in 76. It was an amazing experience to see and feel the music. I also was lucky because I grew up in the 70's and we drove around the back roads of Indiana listening to this music and smoking pot. Not too bad.
