I had to deal with this in my town as well .... Someone not even in my neighborhood complained. We are now buying a place out in the country..... I even thought about getting a lawyer and having "emotional support vehicles" lol

This is very true. These past couple months I've had a lot of cars offered to me that I did not expect 6 months ago. None of them were planned. The silver 244, ALL of the 242's, the 142. All of them were really unplanned but too good to turn down. I bit off more than I could chew and it bit me in the rear.

Also as a second comment, I just sold my house and am now moving to a condo with limited storage and parking. It's actually been really nice to look at stuff and say "you were just here because I didn't want to throw you away. Your value is limited and you will now be thrown away". This whole kerfuffle could be a gift that distills things down a bit in a positive way.

I like to think it was not actually a neighbor but maybe someone online. The reality is, I'm in the wrong any way you cut it. We realized over a year ago that we should move. We haven't been able to nail down a place. We've looked at many, had offers in and lost to higher bidders. It's just the way the south eastern USA now. Prices are soaring.

Would it be ok to extend your concrete driveway further into the backyard to accommodate more cars? And then also to maybe fence in a portion of your backyard to keep unregistered cars? Code enforcement is always such a bother.

Bummer but a car that runs and drives and was only off the driveway temporarily might not qualify as a junk car. Depends on the wording of the code (does it specify “junk vehicles” or just “vehicles”?). Also: is there any temporal element to the offense-I.e., do you violate the rule the second you park off the driveway or must the vehicle remain there for a longer period. If the code uses the word “store” or “storage” that implies an extended stay off of the driveway so if the cars were there for a short period that might be a basis to contest. But on the issue of the code officer “trespassing,” I think you are out of luck. Code officers very likely have legal authority to enter onto private property to investigate a reported or observed potential code violation.
If I had a fence, they cannot look over it. That's about the only way I could fight this. I have not yet been told about length of time a vehicle can be off the driveway.
Have you ever considered moving outside the United States? As I see it in all the channels (from the states) there are those mysterious laws and regulations that are so alien and seems to be derived from a need and greed.
I think about it all the time. Previously I lived in Japan for 6 years. Happiest days of my life! Any developed country will have laws and regulations.

Welp...I figured as much as soon as I read that "due to recent events" post a few days ago. For what it's worth, this is more than a case of a nosy neighbor or an overbearing regulatory authority; WE are the problem...and the potential solution. Zoning laws here in the U.S. create a case of "can't have your cake and eat it too", and many people have a love-hate relationship with them. R-1 zones were established to keep "undesirable" activities (as well as...err...certain people) out of neighborhoods. The way they were written, just about anything other than a place to sleep is prohibited...very few commercial, industrial, agricultural, or even multi-family residential uses are allowed. And while those rules prevent noisy and/or dirty businesses from establishing themselves in a residential neighborhood, they also create some unintended consequences: (a) personal activities like Dean's are categorized as commercial/industrial if they exceed certain limitations, and (b) desirable businesses that many residents might see as assets to their lives and community also can't enter the neighborhood (think "local bakery", "small grocery store", "mom & pop diner", etc.) because ONLY single-family homes are permitted. In many places in the world that are very nice to live in, this would be unthinkable--but not here. Our car-centric infrastructure allows drivers relatively quick, convenient access to our daily needs without having them within walking distance of our homes. In other words, it's ironic...but not surprising...that our car-centric culture places restrictions on car culture; that kind of stuff is fine for someone else's backyard, but not ours...until we decide that we want to do it. So if and when one's city, county, or state considers zoning law reform, think twice before jumping to the conclusion that the current zoning is a good thing, or that the proposed changes are some sort of a fundamental threat to quality of life. It's worth getting into the weeds to consider the pros, cons, and net effect for more than just one's personal situation at the moment.
This goes back to a comment I made several videos back...stop being a hoarder and instead limit yourself to only having the amount of cars allowed...then, pick one or two and fix them up from start to finish, sell them, and move on. Right now your channel is basically all "will it run and drive". Expand the content to "will it run and drive and clean up and be someone else's daily driver. People rightly don't want to live next to a hoarder...it affects their ability to sell their house should they wish to.
Charles, you arent wrong. We try to make things happen with what we have. Lately we have had an influx of cars to make run and re home. I try to bridge that gap between total loss project and someone haveing hope with a runner/driver. The channel does not do well with full restoration videos.
I can see both sides of this. Living in WV, it is common to see stuff and things around homes both in rural and town settings. Sometimes I do not think that people realize how much is on the property or if the "too much" line has been crossed. Based on videos though, I've never had the sense that there is anyone whose deck or family room window looks out on to your property. @brandywineangler6748 makes some good points about what code enforcement can/cannot do. It's a shame that the person who reported you couldn't have just approached you and said "Hey, I know that you actually do things with these, but is there a way you can..." just to get a conversation started and maybe a friendlier solution. Going forward, I'd love to see some start to finish restos as content!! In the meantime, a few yards of concrete are in order. We got your back, my Young Friend!!

If I had a fence, they cannot look over it. That's about the only way I could fight this. I have not yet been told about length of time a vehicle can be off the driveway.

As I see it in all the channels (from the states) there are those mysterious laws and regulations that are so alien and seems to be derived from a need and greed.
I think about it all the time. Previously I lived in Japan for 6 years. Happiest days of my life! Any developed country will have laws and regulations.

Can't you just park register and insurance cars on right side of the driveway from street, up to garage? But still - you're lucy, some people don't have 1 parking spot to work on - you have whole driveway and 2 garages... ;)

Welp...I figured as much as soon as I read that "due to recent events" post a few days ago.
For what it's worth, this is more than a case of a nosy neighbor or an overbearing regulatory authority; WE are the problem...and the potential solution. Zoning laws here in the U.S. create a case of "can't have your cake and eat it too", and many people have a love-hate relationship with them.
R-1 zones were established to keep "undesirable" activities (as well as...err...certain people) out of neighborhoods. The way they were written, just about anything other than a place to sleep is prohibited...very few commercial, industrial, agricultural, or even multi-family residential uses are allowed.
And while those rules prevent noisy and/or dirty businesses from establishing themselves in a residential neighborhood, they also create some unintended consequences: (a) personal activities like Dean's are categorized as commercial/industrial if they exceed certain limitations, and (b) desirable businesses that many residents might see as assets to their lives and community also can't enter the neighborhood (think "local bakery", "small grocery store", "mom & pop diner", etc.) because ONLY single-family homes are permitted.
In many places in the world that are very nice to live in, this would be unthinkable--but not here. Our car-centric infrastructure allows drivers relatively quick, convenient access to our daily needs without having them within walking distance of our homes. In other words, it's ironic...but not surprising...that our car-centric culture places restrictions on car culture; that kind of stuff is fine for someone else's backyard, but not ours...until we decide that we want to do it.
So if and when one's city, county, or state considers zoning law reform, think twice before jumping to the conclusion that the current zoning is a good thing, or that the proposed changes are some sort of a fundamental threat to quality of life. It's worth getting into the weeds to consider the pros, cons, and net effect for more than just one's personal situation at the moment.
This is all true. This is an area for rest and enjoyment. Not automotive work. I should just buy a warehouse.

This goes back to a comment I made several videos back...stop being a hoarder and instead limit yourself to only having the amount of cars allowed...then, pick one or two and fix them up from start to finish, sell them, and move on. Right now your channel is basically all "will it run and drive". Expand the content to "will it run and drive and clean up and be someone else's daily driver. People rightly don't want to live next to a hoarder...it affects their ability to sell their house should they wish to.

Charles, you arent wrong. We try to make things happen with what we have. Lately we have had an influx of cars to make run and re home. I try to bridge that gap between total loss project and someone haveing hope with a runner/driver.
The channel does not do well with full restoration videos.

I can see both sides of this. Living in WV, it is common to see stuff and things around homes both in rural and town settings. Sometimes I do not think that people realize how much is on the property or if the "too much" line has been crossed. Based on videos though, I've never had the sense that there is anyone whose deck or family room window looks out on to your property. @brandywineangler6748 makes some good points about what code enforcement can/cannot do. It's a shame that the person who reported you couldn't have just approached you and said "Hey, I know that you actually do things with these, but is there a way you can..." just to get a conversation started and maybe a friendlier solution. Going forward, I'd love to see some start to finish restos as content!! In the meantime, a few yards of concrete are in order. We got your back, my Young Friend!!
That’s what I was thinking. Would be nice if someone brought it up. Im the first guy that people in the neighborhood go to for help with car trouble. Ultimately I am in the wrong here and have to make adjustments
