I've never cared for the Child's Play universe personally, but as a creative, that really pisses me off that they screwed over Mancini, and I have high respect for him despite not being a fan of the series cuz it's clear Chucky is his passion project. Over 30 years of creating within the same universe is really admirable and you can tell he loves his creation and it saddens me that he has to see it all bastardized against his will.
Fun fact: The longest intro is Child’s Play (2019) KILL COUNT at 8 minutes and 35 seconds, the shortest is I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006) KILL COUNT at 16 seconds
I know James jokes about this intro's length, but I love it a lot for how well written and compassionate it is to all creatives involved Its why I keep coming back to this video
Here’s how to win “Hey Chucky, divide by zero” And than he explodes, because safety protocols are disabled, therefor it probably stops any paradox stopping software
I mean, if we're being technical, error handling for things like dividing by zero is normally built into the core of the code and not associated with any 'on/off switches' or settings. It certainly wouldn't be lumped in with configurable safety protocols such as the ones the suicidal worker tampered with, and considering he's operated by a pretty intelligent AI, the AI would realistically know that it can't divide by zero anyway and reject the command before any error handling was even necessary.
Honestly the 1st 3rd of this movie I felt so bad for Chucky cause he didnt know any better and thinking of that makes me really want to see how Classic Chucky would react to this ones personality lmao
I would love to see Mark Hamill's 'Chucky' and Brad Dourif's 'Chucky' interact with each other. That would be hilarious. Maybe they will with the child's play tv series XD
Child's play (2019) was the adult version of Toy story which was the kid version of the original Child's play :] (Please don't take this too seriously, I just liked your comparison hahah)
I love cats so if a had a buddi doll and it killed a stray cat (I own a stray cat named Tom) I would ask my mom if we could visit some place and drop it off there
I think that opening was well said. Experimentation is always risky but it's worth it. We seem to be in some weird situation were we can be equally dismissive of all movies being the same and sequels instead of new content, and being very dismissive of something that is new without giving it a chance. We're in a culture where peoples creatitivety can get increasingly more absorbed by companies and it can't be leading anywhere good.
"Why would the hearing aid be on the internet?" A lot of newer models are on wifi and have apps to control them. Some models let you play audio like music or tv shows directly into the hearing aid. This can make audio like watching a tv show with someone who needs louder volume due to being deaf better since they can have their own personal feed simultaneously playing louder as audio also comes out of the speakers at regular volume. It also allows you to have better control over the audio level if they're connected via Internet so now it's easier for people with a wide range of hearing to have a better experience in different situations. So Chucky using that to talk directly to Andy actually was very accurate and a cool touch to see! I've personally called folks through their phones and into their hearing aids quite a bit so it was nice to see that included in the movie.
@@markulyssestabasan3064 plus I think they needed another giant humanoid ally since Ultraman wasn't allowed :( Ultraman was in the original book, and I loved the show to death. Sadly they couldn't get it in and had to replace it with the Iron Giant and Gundam. I'm not mad, just a little sad. It's nice to see the Iron Giant in there though, they pulled it off really well.
"I'm sorry it took so long," James, don't ever apologize for the thing that like half of us come here to watch you for! Yes some people just want the numbers but now I'm sitting here everytime just waiting to see what you have to say/ what your opinion is! :)
I just love the way you ask how many people were killed in every single movie kill count video. My favorite one is definitely your line “ how many people became permanently unplugged thanks to some rogue ai?”
I really feel like this film gets a lot of heat because of what MGM did and it’s sad because the cast and crew really did a great job in the movie and I myself actually thought it was pretty solid remake. The fact that they got Mark Hamill to do the voice of Chucky, was an amazing choice and it had a solid concept that I feel we can relate in this day in age. But I also get a lot of the criticism from the Mancini side because it is his creation and the fact that he wants to keep it going and they want to try to erase it and try to cash in makes total sense why most people wouldn’t wanna see this movie. In a way I do wanna see this reboot series expand more but I don’t think we’re ever gonna see it happen again because now Mancini is continuing the original Chucky series, and also now that Amazon owns the rights to the original because they bought MGM. I think it’s safe to say that we won’t see this reboot series go anywhere.
Honestly I love that this is the closest we'll ever get to the Original Idea Don had for the series back in the 80s. The concept is loosey based off the Original Child play Script called' "Blood Buddy". Having Chucky Being Protective of Andy and killing for him. Except in he Original Story: Him and Andy have a more deep relationship, Andy's Mom being an abusive alcholic , Andy informing Mike Norris about Chucky when his mother's the next victim.
The thing I don’t like about this one is that they take the whole serial killer possessed doll aspect out of it, which is literally the entirety of what Chucky IS. This is just a doll with an unexplainable malfunction because of a safety switch being turned off that picked up all the wrong things from AI learning intelligence. This isn’t even really chucky.
The running theme of "kids being hooked to their devices", I can't help but see this more as a fear of technology but coming from the perspective of someone who doesn't really know how technology works
Mad respect for James for that opening message, as a life long Child's Play fan, you've done the series justice and have spoken about an apparent issue in today's films, big ups bro.
After watching the recounts of the chucky movies I now fully understand James' disclamer at the begginning. Well said (I never watched the original Kill Counts)
The reason I love Dead Meat so much is because it feels like a video essay that James gives himself the right to not take it too seriously, while also adding his very insightful opinion. It makes me feel like I’m learning about film, colors, editing techniques, and camera angles. Thank you James!
@@tristan1675 Yup. Someone else mentioned that and I had totally missed it. That doesn't make it any less shitty, but at least I know the reasoning. :-/
I agree with James and all the others saying this should have been a new IP. The only similarity between this movie and the original Child's Play (aside from the name and appearance) is that they both have a doll as the antagonist.
What's strange is that Megan is a good example of making a new ip, I don't know what people think about it, but it's antagonist is a ai, like this, and it's not a reboot
Imma keep it a buck. Your editing during the opening deep dive is something else. Chucky holding up 3 fingers when you say the same number, a baby being given birth when you say the same word. Chef Kiss.
Also for some reason , some of these remakes removes the supernatural aspect of the movie and instead replaces it with technology BS. I'm talking about the invisible man remake.
The og chucky at least has a child's face and look a little believable as a doll. This one is just plain ugly and inbred, why would anyone think it's believable as product for kids is beyond me
@@selfmadetray5836 My point still stands. It's still a product with a face, and in order to sell those normally it needs not to look ugly af ? It's my opinion though.
I love the idea of Chucky being somewhat kind hearted like he wasn't trying to become a murderer or anything but genuinely wanted to be friends with Andy in his own weird sort of way it makes Chucky feel more like a tragic villain than an outright psychopathic murderer of the first Chucky
Cool, except this is supposed to be a horror movie. If he's not a psychopath, what is there to be afraid of? If he's sympathetic, cool; he still kills people. Cut his wires and toss him in a closet. Movie over. There needs to be some major threat for the audience to connect to and dread. THIS is a Simpsons episode.
I kinda like how they showed the doll as a malfunctioning thing instead of a serial killer stuck in a dolls body, but I do agree they should have made it it's own thing, I feel it still would have done good if they had
I agree as well. Obviously it would be called Buddi but also change how the main antagonist is represented. New looks, hair, name, etc. But money always clouds the minds of even the greatest of potentials.
Yes I agree 💯 with what you said or texted I like the doll being a robot instead. And there's one thing I think to is that this movie is Ten more times realistic and people saying the Robot is ugly so why would people but it ...It's a ROBOT so many people would but it .
I honestly think they should've stuck with the serial killer thing. Even if the doll malfunctions, nothing can malfunction to the point of "whoops I accidentally stabbed multiple people to death and spread my wacky powers to other toys used to my advantage". The serial killer plot at least gives a bit of reasoning as to why the doll acts up for so long and how it can cause so much damage. The "malfunctioning robot doing something bad" trope is overused, at least give that role to a character who doesn't already have an entire lore behind it. The design for Buddi 2 would sell the plot way better as it's not too uncanny valley to even be considered a toy and since it could be used to invent something way more creative than just rewriting Chucky entirely.
I totally get where you're coming from, but I'm kinda tired of the whole malfunctioning robot thing in horror stuff. Or just stuff in general. I liked the idea they had and it was executed fine, but I dunno. It's a movie about a doll for children that murders people, I don't expect it to have a realistic or believable backstory.
Killing my vibe before even getting into the review. Not James’ fault; I’m actually glad he made me aware of Mancini’s conflict w this movie. It really would suck to have a project you’ve put so much dedication into be taken by other people and altered in ways you never intended it to be
that’s a great way of putting it and i share the same exact thoughts, really sucks to learn ab it before the count but it’s really helpful to know about how much they screwed over mancini
Actually the thing that sucks most is that one of Mancini's original ideas for Chucky was that he be a robot or some form of AI. The Chucky being human bit just happened to be cheaper and more effective at the time is my bet on why his is human and not AI or robotic. Basically the studio gave these dolts permission to do the version he originally intended to do albeit with a new script and a new Chucky design. Guess what jackasses, coulda had the original if you'd just made nice with the Don.
If chucky’s design looked better, I think more people would like the movie including myself. And let’s be honest, it’s hard to make a lot of dolls for a movie, this was the best they could do.
This is true but I feel like the story doesn’t line up with the original the movie would have been better if a serial killer transferred his soul into a actually cool/unsettling feeling and look to it
Fun Fact: Bear McCreary didn't just do the soundtrack for the 2019 Child's Play film, he also did the soundtrack for 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Maybe Andy's hearing aids are connected to his phone and that's why Chucky can connect to them. My sister's hearing aids are like that to control the volume
i think the top comment mentions that he didnt know hearing aids could be connected via bluetooth, so im guessing the hearing aids in the film are meant to be bluetooth based

To be honest, I wasn’t that sad at the cat being dead because I hate cats. However, what really took the cake is the way Andy reacts and Buddi/Chucky playing the cat sounds.
All the kids in my screening were losing their shit. Also that showing had more kids than anyone above the age of 18. Certain the people running the place didnt give a fuck on who would see the flick.
I like that this isn’t a remake people hate on just for the sake of it being a remake. People hate on this moreso because of the morally flawed principle behind MGM producing this to spite Mancini.
It's a shame, because as far as remakes go, this does feel like it has a purpose for being remade and feels like it wanted to give the original movie a completely different context that would be impossible to do in the original continuity. At its heart, it's every bit as much of a biting condemnation of the inherent deception and insincerity of commercialism that the original movie was, updated to reflect the new evils of mass marketing. I feel as if there wasn't such bitter animosity between Mancini and MGM and they'd actually let him have creative involvement (maybe to fix the Chucky design into something I could actually see sold on shelves the way the non-evil Good Guy dolls looked) we could have had THE definitive Child's Play movie.
I actually really liked how you gave your thoughts & feelings about the movie before the kill count started. I wouldn't mind seeing it more with some other movies in the future. Overall good Kill Count. The idea of a Smart Home app gone wrong is cool but I feel like they could've done more. Some stuff was silly too, like when would any app be able to disable the airbag & unlatch a seatbelt in a car.
Fun Fact : *Childs Play (2019) had a parody poster of Toy Story 4, the original Toy Story 4 poster had Woody tipping his hat in a blank space, and Childs Play had Chucky walking off screen with a bloody bootleg woody off screen aswell*
This movie did an excellent job at what they tried. By making him a loving AI it gave his character a whole new perspective where when you think about chucks view it’s kinda heartbreaking just as much as it’s terrifying. He’s the living embodiment of loving someone so much you’ll kill for them.
The thing is, not every monster needs a tragic bend. In some cases (like this one), that sympathetic edge takes away what makes the character who he is! Having a Chucky who's not Charles Lee Ray, serial killer is like having a Freddie Krueger who never abused kids and just needs a hug. Or a John Kramer who only kills accidentally and treats insurance brokers with respect. Or a Leatherface who runs away from home because he doesn't want to kill anymore. A non-scary horror movie villain is an UNSUCCESSFUL horror movie villain; and a villain can't be scary if we're spending most of our time going "awe, poor baby just wants love and doesn't KNOW any better!!"
@@mc-rn8ro actually, the only thing that made me interested in the nightmare on elm street remake was that the early trailers made it seem like in this version, Freddy had actually been innocent of the crimes he was accused of, and was murdered by enraged parents who thought accusation was the same as guilt. that premise was far more interesting then what we actually got.

Over 30 years of creating within the same universe is really admirable and you can tell he loves his creation and it saddens me that he has to see it all bastardized against his will.

2019 James: I'm done talking about the original series.

Yeah, they really should have done their own thing instead of riding on Chucky.
They should’ve redesigned and renamed Chucky and named the movie “Buddi” and boom,no child’s play bullshit, just a good horror movie
@@tingofingo1348 I'm pretty sure the movie already has a buddy bear, they could use that concept perfectly.
@@mr.vansjohnson7469 yes!

I also like the idea that he kind became evil because kids can be dumbasses. they taught him stuff, but taught him all the wrong things.
Not gonna lie Chucky's design has seen better days
That's putting it nicely
exactly
