Ikr?? I was thinking about my grandmother that lived in Tennessee. Whenever we would go visit in the summer we would pick the green beens and prep them for canning as we sat around the table, she had a job in town as a clerk but made ends meet with her garden.....EVERYONE had a garden and many still do.....love seeing this come back around with new energy.....and all those tats😅👍
I love pressure canning. I feel I am going back in time when people lived doing this. It's a pity people have lost these simple skills. It's too easy to buy from the shop - unless there is a food shortage and then most will whinge rather than grow and preserve.
I was never a big fan of tomatoes, until I started to grow my own organically. Then I realized it was not the tomatoes that I didn't like, but the way the store bought ones are grown. I love a fresh tomato from the garden, nothing compares. I wish I would've learned canning from my grandmother before she passed. I always pickle my extra peppers and jar them up to put in the pantry.
It is very easy to can your own food no one taught me how to do it and I just started doing it about 10 years ago when I was in my fifties and now I'm not afraid to even can meet when I can get good organic or Wild meat
And now, it's 10 minutes later. The vegetables in the stores are like plastic. I have pet guinea pigs that eat tremendously. I offered them vegetables that cost more than I would have ever paid but I have to have them for them. And I thought that they're just so strange, even the organic vegetables. Eventually it got to where my guinea pigs wouldn't touch their favorite veggies. I had to go a long time without offering them before they got desperate enough to eat them. I've always had space to grow food and for the last two many years I have not. There's more to the story but that's the short version. And you're also right it's not the vegetables fault that you taste in the store or out of a can. When you grow them yourself they don't even taste related. Plus you have the freedom of cooking them in a style that taste good they're not boiled in water until they've lost their color
Food shortages are coming.
Worst in 75 years.

We have been canning together for some time so another generation will learn how to grow and preserve.
Me too... I just picked up a bucket, some leaf mulch and bark that had dropped off a tree from a carpark. I am always on the lookout lol... recycle and reuse. Nature is awesome. 🤗🍁🌿

Hi Spicy moustache! Just came across your channel. I am impressed with what you have done with the space you have. It is beautiful. You mentioned in your video that you wish that you could raise chickens. I raise Coturnix quail in stackable cages. They are small birds that fit into your whole hand & consist of dark meat. Their eggs are tiny & 3 of them match one large chicken egg. I raise these domesticated adorable birds for meat & eggs. These hens have had the ability to go broody & hatch out chicks bred out of them, so I have to hatch out chicks in an egg incubator. They really don't take up much room unlike chickens & they should be contained in cages or a walk in aviary system since they are not the smartest birds & will not survive on their own & predators will get them if not well protected.

Really glad to have beer introduced to you by my 20 year old Son. 😊. We’ve an empty garden just used for dogs and we are now dividing the garden space in two. I’m really looking forward to getting outside with a plan. The vertical gardening is a must to maximise space as I will only have half. I still got cucumbers pickled from last year, they're in perfect shape (in vinegar), compots and even gem from 3 yrs ago. We got a long cold season so it's traditional to store food. My cellar always has something you can eat right away.
I can't truly "prepare" for a food shortage other than build the knowledge on survival, growing and raising animals. As far as going full on gardening, I just can't go full on on what it needs so my gardens produce but don't pop like if I had time to nurture it. I have tow kids and a mean ex (their mother) that doesn't care whatsoever about fresh food. I still practice, know survival, have some emergency food and have tools, resources and knowledge on making and fixing things. I have land, tools, resources and everything else but time. Thanks for all your great videos then and continuing. Just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't, and maybe not in the way of shortages but priced out of reach. Keep up th he good work.

If that is corn I would recommend a denser planting. Corn is wind pollinated. You will get better results with a denser planting. I think Potatoes would be a better choice for a small plot.

Think about having meat rabbits or quail birds in your tiny urban garden for meat and eggs. They're legal in most major cities, unlike chickens and require minimal space.

Loved it... very inspirational...thank you ❤, so we justtt moved to an apartment, but, have a garden thats been neglected (30 years?)... so, going to get it going...! ... alot of sitting, and just LOOKING about... what to do 1st... so, i think ive got a BEGINNING of the plan... which is really, the clean up, and seeing what i can use from the mess, and what must go... so, again, thank you! ... loving all your vids... ohh, i made crisps from a load of potato peels... ate every last 1! 👍🤗🙏
Don't forget to grow medicinal herbs too. Many of the herbs we use in the kitchen are also great medicinally. Also learn which weeds are edible 😊

Hi. Second year I plant all sorts and storing. Trying buy less and less from shops. I know what I plant and how I grow. :) Allotment plot not big but trying my best.
Many people don’t realize that produce bought in grocery stores, have declined in nutrients over the decades, due to mass production of food , versus much more nutritious organic backyard farms.

But I have a question, since tomatos are nightshade plants and plant and root are toxic. Can I plant leafy greens under the tomatos in separate compartments, so they do not share soil. ?

Good morning from California! You said unfortunately you have no animals due to space have you looked into fish farming in small areas? You can grow a good amount of fish in a 55 gallon drum. The water can also be used to add beneficial nutrients to your plants.

That’s facts though home grown just hits different! Organic is definitely better than conventional but home grown in homemade compost planted in the ground is the best.

The thing that causes shortages is the humans have become so specialized that they only do one thing and depend on a long supply chain to provide all their needs.

Just remembered a question for you. I have a raised bed, it's only in sunlight for part of the day so I put in lettuces and onions. The onions are doing great, I've tried the lettuces twice but they've been totally wiped out by slugs. Any ideas? Thank you.

Have a look at nematodes. They help a lot in the garden and they will get rid of slugs and snails

Looking forward to harvesting a pig. I'm guessing the pig is less excited. That would definitely be the major reason I'm a vegetarian. I worked for 30 years in the veterinary field caring for animals. I just can't eat them.

Looking at the intro I can see you have just 3 sweet corn plants there, did you get cobs from them? I’ve always grown them in blocks (like all the books, experts, tradition dictates!) and I’ve recently watched a video from someone else who grew them, successfully, in a line, so interested to find out how others have got on with breaking the rules
Hello, I planted corn in waves because I didn’t want a single harvest but many different ones. It worked great and I managed to get a few different harvests in just a 1.20 m2

Could you share some more information, such as how many plants at a time, how long between sowings, variety etc. I would imagine that a video on this would be useful for many people - anything that challenges preconceptions and demonstrates alternative methods that work has got to be beneficial. How many people just plant 1 large sowing in a block which results in a glut, how can other crops be treated likewise, etc? Thanks for the reply, I appreciate any thoughts and ideas

My daughter wanted to grow corn a couple of years ago (in UK) we planted 6 seeds, only 4 became seedlings, then one of those died before planting out. We planted out the three remaining plants, I knew they were supposed to be planted in a square, so I tried a triangle formation. I also remembered my grandad helping his greenhouse tomatoes to cross pollinate with a "tickle stick" as he called it, so I did that too. All three plants produced! Good luck with yours.

I just wished that you guys just stay with the vegetables and not go into animals....the way, Steven said the pigs are close to harvest is so 😢 sad.....pigs are as smart as dogs and you compare them to your vegetables..😢😢😢..i respect, Gaz Oakley who rescued his chickens and only use their poo as manure & gives away thier eggs...

I watch all of your videos. However, I stopped this one right away by the time your friend said "I'll be HARVESTING my pigs next week". Using the same term as you use when picking up plants to adorable, clever, and senscient beings is too much to me!

honestly, growing up on a farm as a vegan you learn the difference between local livestock vs mass produced
What we did was care for the animal and made sure they were loved because all of that plays a part into what they produce. Eating anything from a scared/sad animal will bring you down
we also made sure the animal’s death wasn’t in vain by using everything down to the bones for broths and/or the shepherd dogs
personally i get too attached to the animals to go back to livestock farm stuff but i still prefer people supporting local farms for their meats vs big commercial farms that don’t care

Controlling and killing a sentient animal just for a few moments of sensory pleasure can never be justified! Cos to get Chicken Ovulations means buying Female Chickens from a breeder who’s Male Chicks are surplus to requirement, so it is standard industry practice to grind the Male Chicks up alive in a Macerator or killed in gas chambers, and every animal bred for eating = less habitat for wildlife
I have a question about rain water. If they are poisoning the sky with chemical trails isn’t the water going into our soil? I’m just learning about starting my own food. It’s hard for me because I live in an apartment in NY (Queens) and we have nowhere to start an outdoor garden. And there really is no room inside to grow either 😢. Planning on moving but not soon enough. Have have a few in window at the moment like basil, cilantro, mint and thyme. Because we use that a lot. Thank you for such wonderful informational videos.
