We are from the island of Montsetrat. In the Caribbean. My husband and myself were reading the book of Judges chapter 1 -5 as we searched for someone or some commentary, to help us explain chapters 4 and 5, we were so pleased to come across your preaching. We were throughly blessed. God is a faithful God. Thank you so much for explaining those chapters to us in such a simple way. We were made the better for it. May God continue to bless your Ministry.
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. Today (June 4), Judges 4:1-10 was the basis for our Sunday School Lesson of the Day. It was entitled "Deborah and Barak." The hymn, "Listen, God Is Calling," a Tanzanian traditional translated by Howard S. Olson (1922-2010), is a good hymn to compliment this Scripture, regardless of denomination.
Time 11:11 Judges 4:8 reflects the same thing Moses said to God, "If you go with me I will go, but if you don't go with us, I will not" Barak is saying what a Godly leader always said. Yes it is conditional, but winning the war requires a partnership. I just love how the various book mirror one another.
I also had time to meditate ..! But a thought cross through moses receive the word directly from God but baraka receive a word from a prophetes so him saying that its kinder indicate he had doubts of what he was told
Beautiful sermon as always. I have a question. When the prophetess Deborah prophesied as the lord has sent her that if she goes to the battle the victory of the battle will be given to a woman. Was the woman Jael ?
Wow! That's some kinda aneurysm! I mean, I knew the story, but all I can think is this lady is expert at camping. I can only imagine how heavy the tent fabric was. Wonder how they kept things dry?
Maybe when he said he’s not going unless you do, he really meant God, Who she spoke for?.. As in, If God is not in this thing I’m not doing it, which is a wise thing to say. Or maybe he just didn't want to go unless he would have the word of the LORD right there from Deborah; up to date instructions from God. Could be totally wrong on both counts. 25:32 - The stars sometimes reference the angels, maybe she meant the angels were helping?..
As I read the verses it seems like Barak has more confidence in Deborah's relationship with God rather than his own relationship with God. This is why the honor of killing Sisera goes to a woman instead of Barak, because he had little faith.
But Israel had forsaken the Lord and worshiped idols... This was in Canaan. The men wouldn't lead the children of God,.. He rose up a woman and the battle was not won without honor... The lord saved them but the were shamed for their lack of courage and disobedience....
Deborah is a type and forshadow of Jesus. Jesus is displayed as a symbol of a courageous woman in this book. In the culture of that time, women were seen to be a sex of meekness, humility, servanthood and of lesser importance. We see through the power of God that a woman in the cultural atmosphere of that time, whereby men were given greater importance, could be raised to lead Israel into victory. Jael is also used to display this aspect of Jesus too. The song in Judges 5 speaks of Jesus. We see Deborah and Jael as 2 symbols of Jesus - We see the juxtaposition of the two women raised up to be daring in courage and first in battle in which they claimed victory for the nation and put to death their enemies. This role would normally be played out in a male figure. On the flip side. We see men, and mankind in general (men and women) fearing in battle and running from the call of God.
What??!! It’s hard to know what was in Barack’s heart?? Well….that’s why God left his Holy Spirit to reveal this…….Barak said if you don’t go I won’t go…..was because he was consumed with fear, he was reluctant because he was fearful and doubted….Super book was better than this….come on.

He asked for water and she gave him milk. Milk has tryptophan that causes sleepiness. Made the job easier. Lol.

So funny @Jennifer Campbell! I was even thinking, "Did she warm the milk"? Lol.
