    In order that people using my mugs may contemplate the mysteries of the universe while drinking their morning coffee, I make my handles in the shape of a question mark (rolling up a little ball on the bottom end). But seriously, I try to make handles that make sense for a particular mug. Trying to get better at adding decorative elements.

    I always enjoy watching your technique. I prefer the really clean look of your mug handles. Do you ever put thumb rest on the top of the handle? I find that guys seem to like that on a mug. Love the Art Wander Tee. Hope to get up there to partake in the wander.

    I definitely have a handle preference and I'm changing how I make mine as well. I have a few reasons for why I like a sturdy, thick 4 finger handle. That mug you showed where you can fit your whole hand in the handle is exactly what I like. I have tiny hands. They are not very strong. They even have early stages of arthritis (and I'm young, only 44). When I can only fit one or two fingers in the handle, my fingers are not strong enough to hold up a full mug of liquid. So the mug droops, my hand is in pain, and I need to get that second hand up to the mug before it falls. I want a meaty handle so I feel like I'm really grasping something. I also often hold my mug just by the side of the mug, sliding my 3 or 4 fingers into the handle for extra support. I can't do this with a 1 or 2 finger handle. I've noticed that potters need to make different handles to offer different options to customers, since people have such strong preferences on the subject. By the way, that was a great wake boarding video today! Awesome perspective, and loved the underwater part at first.

      I need a big handle for the same reason - arthritis and neuropathy require a firm grip with 3-4 fingers!

    Learning to make mugs, so thank you for this video. I'm finding the handles are hard to get right. A side note; Men tend to hold the coffee mug handle with one or two fingers, and women like to hold the coffee mug handle with their whole hand. Watch your customers in your shops. It seems to hold true. 😊

    Hey Jon! I just discovered you a couple weeks ago! I am a beginner potter, and just got into a pottery club at a community centre here in Vancouver, Canada. This means I can jump in the studio whenever, which feels so exciting but intimidating because I am SO BAD right now, but I LOVE IT! Really enjoy your energy and fun in your videos. I've been binging them... kinda obsessed! Still just trying to get good at centering and making cylinders. I'm currently working with a reddish clay - Navajo clay - it stains your hands. Any tips on how to get it off your hands easy? I'm also an actor, so need my hands to stay pretty.... PS: I also just started my own TH-cam Channel for other actors, artists & creatives - so have been looking at your vids for TH-cam creator inspiration too. Yesssss you are so awesome!

    The handles are perfect. How do you figure out how to get them to the point where they are solid enough to trim the foot but not have the top too dry to add the handle, especially when trying to do a bunch at a time?

    Silly question, how do you prevent that bad swamp smell and black (I'm going to call it mold but I don't know what it is) on the bottom.of your slip bucket. I find if I keep my slip for more then a few days it smells when I open it and the bottom has turned black.

  • @UniquelyPenny
    @UniquelyPenny 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’m not a potter. Wish I was. But seeing you use slip, I have a question about slip. How do you make it? What makes good skip? Does it dry out? If it does can it be saved?

    • @Carolynne1982
      @Carolynne1982 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      UniquelyPenny A.K.A Penny Loker Slip is just clay and water. I like to make mine kind of thick and gooey. Just add less water. If slip dries out, just add some water and wait.
      Trimmings make great slip because the clay will dry faster in smaller pieces. Crush it up, the powderier the better, and add water!

    Heya Jon! I am a total beginner with pottery, I think you would know how to solve my problem...?
    I glazed a figurine, not dipped but "painted on" because I just had a little amount of that glaze. After I took it out of the oven it turned out with some spotting where the clay shows through. It's not bad looking but it bothers me. Could I just put some more glaze on the little spots and bake it again...? Or would that ruin the already baked glaze...? Google seems to give me no answers or I don't know what to look for because I lack the pottery vocabulary haha
    Greetings from Germany!

    • @hetiswiesje
      @hetiswiesje 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Have you ever used clay you dug up yourself?

    • @danbance5799
      @danbance5799 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have. I dug a hole in my back yard and kept digging until I got usable clay. It still had a some rocks and sand in it, so I mixed it in water until all the clay was in suspension, let the heavier particles settle out for 30 minutes, then poured off the clay water, let that settle overnight, then carefully siphoned off the excess water. Then I purified it again so even more sand could settle out. It took almost a month to dry to a nice clay texture. Ultimately, it wasn't great clay. It was very coarse and difficult to throw, but I was able to make a few things with it, and it was a great experience. When you fire it, put it on a large plate of known clay in case it melts in the kiln. You will almost certainly get much better clay from your local clay supplier (like Continental Clay!), and if you value your time, commercial clay is cheaper, but if you want to dig your own clay, you absolutely should. No reason not to.
