Thank you for this video! I have a set of the small J. Herbin dip pens that I bought fifteen ago, and while I love the aesthetics, I rarely used them due to the roughness of the nibs. Now, armed with the information in this video and a piece of sandpaper, I have been able to vastly improve the writing experience offered by these beautiful pens. Of course, now I find my shopping cart at Goulet Pen Co. is filled with various inks and papers, and I realize this was part of your insidious plan all along. Well played, Sir... well played indeed...
I use these for color coding my journal, as an author I have a few different stories I’ve got planned, but when I’m writing notes I just go, in the past this has made looking through my notes for a specific story hard. Now I use different colors for notes on different stories, blue, purple black, green etc. love it
I have a few glass pens. The first two weren't great so I bought another much more expensive one that was really beautiful, but still scratchy and unpleasant. This simple trick worked very well. Thanks!
I practiced a lot with steel and glas dip pens before I bought my first fountain pen. The sound that the glass pens make when writing is very interesting.
If you do smooth the tip, make sure it's with VERY fine sandpaper, it's easy to overdo it and you can't go back once you do! It really doesn't take much.
Yeah, no longer available. We ran into some quality issues and discontinued them, and eventually Exaclair actually stopped importing them into the US at all. The Rohrer and Klingner ones are gorgeous, and write much better than the later version of the Herbin pens. The tips are smooth but slightly broader than what you see in this video.
I was given a glass dip pen by a friend, and she got it from Pensic, a Renaissance Reenactment convention thing, and everything sold there is handmade, so someone hand blew my pen! :D
I'm glad! I think i was borderline cheesy there, but I said what the heck and just did it. I'm trying to put a little more 'entertainment' into my vids.
I have one, made by an artisan, in France, he made it in direct, took a long time, but it was beautiful. Ps: I love your accent, when you pronounce French words :)
Mr. Goulet, you said that the large pen was a different writing experience, but you didn't demonstrate writing with it. I felt disappointed as I was planning to buy one when I could view a demonstration. I liked the rest of the demo. Thank you
I was gifted a glass pen in my teens, and it's moved around with me from place to place over the last 15 years or so - I'm so glad I finally found a good use for it! I've got a ton of samples coming my way, including loads of the shimmer inks, I'm really looking forward to it!
I have one of these. So far I've really only used it for testing inks when I'm trying to decide what color to use (it's great for that) but I need to get it out and try to get the hang of writing more with it. :) I love how quick and easy it is to change ink colors!
Great video! I was actually looking for a demonstration on this practice! I encourage all fountain pen enthusiasts to give it a try! It's a lot of fun!
I love the idea of this. I grew-up using a nib pen and then fountain pens but I love this. I am for sure going to try one. I so someone on FB using it for a Zentangle picture. Thanks for a great demo.
I loved the video. I just recently received a glass pen set for Christmas, and this video really gave me some greatly appreciated and needed tips on how to use them.
I like this video, I've seen them online for months and just a few days ago ordered one so I'll be getting it soon. always liked using capless fountain pens and this might be something I may wanna use
I am curious to find out how and when you got interested in inks and fountain pen.. you seem very young :0) I remember when I started using fountain pen I used them at school, we used pelikan and another german brand. I use these days waterman and pelikan and am going to order one of these glass pens.
Here's a video on how the Goulet's got into fountain pens: th-cam.com/video/1-grtvZbIJ0/w-d-xo.html It's a long one, but gives a lot of context on what our company is all about. - Colin
I really like using these kinds of pens, one draw back I've noticed is that some inks will get stuck in the flutes and not come out! I've tried so many things (including Goulet Pen flush) and nothing helps. Either way, I really like the experience of using a dip pen
Must be Baystate Blue.. that stuff stains the fabric of space-time. Absolutely stunning color but it takes a *lot* of technique not to make an atrocious mess. :D
I received a glass pen for my going-away gift. Italian-made beauty. Sure, I was a little disheartened to learn it only cost $24 (even a cheapass like I would buy it), but its aesthetic value and writing quality is not lost. One of my prized possessions. What an awesome video series you have!
Gosh it's really hard to say. I like the larger one better, not just because my hand is bigger but because the small one is REALLY thin, thinner than a bic pen.
I'm now getting into these! Do you have any suggestions for what brand to buy? I got a cheap amazon one to start off with but am wondering if I'm better off getting a J Herbin or another brand? I can't seem to find much content on this. Thanks!
Starting to look around for info on fountain and dip pens, paper, ink etc. Your videos are informative and easy to watch, every one I've seen so far. Thanks!
Brian, I don't see the Herbin glass pens at your store -- no longer available? I'm starting to become a fountain addict (and regular customer of yours!) and am considering getting one of these to keep at home for special things like signing holiday cards and multicolored work. How do the Rohrer & Klingners compare?
what happens to the ink container if left open like that for an hour or so while I am writing. this is very interesting though and I wanted to see how the glass pen works..
If you're writing for an hour with a dip pen, I'd definitely recommend going with a smaller inkwell (www.gouletpens.com/ink-miser/c/462) that you put a little bit of ink in at a time as you're writing. - Colin
For the glass nib (point) only you can apparently use any ink (fountain, or dip) and even use water color paint! Without worry of damaging the pen either!
This may sound weird but which pen might be more comfortable get? The small or the large? My hand from the bottom of my palm to the tip of my middle finger is about 6.5in.
Oh my that is small. :/ Well I made up my mind to get the small violet one, though the big one looks more comfortable it's to long to be used without it being a little awkward (Another time though) :)
I am used to fountain pens and just got a glass dip nib that I really enjoy. However, I've always been paranoid about contaminating my bottle of ink. That paranoia is worse with the dip pen. Am I being crazy, or is there a real reason to worry about a greater chance of contamination when using a dip nib rather than filling a fountain pen?
I think you're probably in the clear. If you're dipping the glass pen from ink to ink without cleaning it off, that might cause issues, but should be fine otherwise! - Colin
ehhh....wouldn't be my first choice. A fountain pen would be better. The only thing that it would be good for would be changing inks a lot, if you do that when you draw. The glass pen is pretty stiff and really hard to control in a drawing setting.
I'm not familiar with any that have a glass body. That's pretty hard to make I'd imagine and obviously not durable. Most demonstrators stick to plastic. - Colin
Nathan Nguyen Pilot Iroshizuku is generally a bit more wet and offers a brighter selection of colors. J.Herbin writes drier (except for the 1670 collection). Hope that helps! -Margaret
Tell me about it. I have customers who have 400+ bottles of ink. Sometimes you just don't feel like flushing and inking up a pen to test a color, y'know?
Hi, I’m just getting interested in glass dip pens. I bought a cheap glass dip pen and variety of inks to see if the interest holds, then will spend more for better products. I have a question: why are most demonstrations for glass dip pens and fountain pens done by right handed people? Left handers would like to see how these products work for them too. Just saying.
I've seen a fountain pen with a glass nib on Kickstarter a while ago and I was really curious about it. Unfortunately, I didn't have the money to buy it and I would be way too scared to break it to dare use it! I often drop pens left and right... luckily capped, most of the time. What is your opinion on a fountain pen with a glass nib? (here's the link if you're curious! www.winkpens.com/)
I would say save your money and just get a glass dip pen like in this video. seems like that glass nib fountain pen just gives you longer writing time with less of the convenience of not having to clean anything out to change ink, etc. unless of course you don't want to change ink, in which case, go for the glass fountain pen. If your clumsy, it'll teach you to be more careful if you carry it every day.
These have become ubiquitous and glass dip pens are now all over the likes of Amazon and eBay. Many no-name and Chinese brands have entered the market since this was recorded and I have several that i use for ink testing (particularly iron falls) without fear of fouling or corroding a metal nib. None of mine are J Herbin yet, but I may treat myself.
"Ocean Spray 2010. Excellent year."
That made me laugh! :)
Mmmmm..... vintage videos. Love these older videos, had an enjoyable evening watching these videos. Thank you.

I found some glass pens at my dollar tree and love them they are so much fun. And so that’s how I ended up here just to check out inks.
In the craft area or the office area?
@@mjbeapparently only around Christmas time does the stores get only one box each.

Love the technique to polish the nib. Got my first glass dip pen. Great way to revisit some links and get inspired. Great to doodle. Thank you.
My gosh, what lovely handwriting you have.
I'm glad! I think i was borderline cheesy there, but I said what the heck and just did it. I'm trying to put a little more 'entertainment' into my vids.
Really interesting stuff, I'm glad I find it even if I am 5 years late to the party!
Try 8 years
Oh wow didn’t realize this was 10 years ago
13 years and counting.
I think you'll still enjoy it. It's fun to use, large or small :)
I have one, made by an artisan, in France, he made it in direct, took a long time, but it was beautiful.
Ps: I love your accent, when you pronounce French words :)
So cool!
I can see myself using these pens, exception being I would cap the ink bottles between usage as I am clumsy by nature, lol 😯 Great video

I've just bought a J Herbin glass dip pen with some of their scented rose ink and found your video demo very useful! Thanks :-)
Thanks for using the J. Herbin Eclat de Saphir. I have been wanting to see what it looked like.
I was freaked out the whole time..." It's gonna break it's gonna break!! ''
They can be like that, but they're pretty easy to smooth out.
I love that sound! :D
Thanks!
do you prefer the short or the long one? which is more comfortable?
Great pen. Thank you for nice review.
ocean spray.... LOL
Do they really make wine or is that cranberry juice?
lol it's juice
Fantastic Video MATE! As Always, good job
just about lost it at ocean spray

Gosh it's really hard to say. I like the larger one better, not just because my hand is bigger but because the small one is REALLY thin, thinner than a bic pen.

@ConfusedSponge No, none of the Herbin inks are waterproof (though Perle Noir and Poussiere de Lune are pretty water resistant).
Young Brian. Dang. Remember those halcyon days?
No doubt I'm saying things wrong, I have a couple of years of French I took in high school, but that was a while ago.
"Ocean Spray 2010, an excellent year" HAHA that cracked me up!

I posted a response video on a similar glass pen….I'll email you to send you the link (can't put it here anymore). Thanks!
How does J.Herbin ink compare to pilot's iroshizuku?
Nathan Nguyen Pilot Iroshizuku is generally a bit more wet and offers a brighter selection of colors. J.Herbin writes drier (except for the 1670 collection). Hope that helps! -Margaret
Would you recommend J.Herbin to a user whole solely writes with iroshizuki ink?
