Obviously, it goes without saying, “Bands on the Run” is a terrible movie. The colors are muddy, the animation is stilted and zombie-like, the lip sync is breathtakingly off… I could go on (as I’m sure your video will).
That said, this wasn’t an Ed Wood or Tommy Wiseau situation (where the creators genuinely believe they’re making a great film and are tragically mistaken). Instead, our fatal flaw was outsourcing almost all the CG work (the background modeling, character modeling, rigging, lighting, and animation) to, quite possibly, the cheapest, shoddiest, most fly-by-night animation studio in China.
Our tiny LA team (this was my first job out of college, and I was the entire art department) designed the 2d characters, storyboarded the film and pulled together a decent animatic in two months. We sent it off to be animated, and a few months later, we began receiving “finished” shots, which were - if you can imagine - 10x worse than what you see in the final film. Horrifying stuff. Characters and animation so mangled that we were forced to scrap dozens of shots. Our director pushed back for revisions, but the overseas animators had clearly over-promised and could barely deliver first passes - let alone polished work.
The LA team had a minuscule budget and a pre-signed distribution deal, with a hard deadline in 4 months (the entire production was 8 months), so we scrambled to salvage the movie: building a DIY render farm, teaching ourselves 3DS Max and Maya, pulling all-nighters for weeks straight, and cleaning up shots as best we could. In the end, we made the movie 10x better, but, of course, it needed to be 100x better to be at all watchable.
And... that’s the basic rundown. No one involved in the production ever thought ‘Bands’ was going to be a great movie (especially once we saw the outsourced CG), but we all loved animation and (despite our lack of experience) happily leapt at the chance to work on our first animated feature - no matter how terrible it ended up. Wouldn’t you do the same?

At least I didn't gauge my eyes until the depth of hell or selling both of my kidneys to die because of the shitstain animation.
It just goes to show how nice drawings and sketches are. We're in an age where everything is digital, but then you see the storyboards for some crappy CG movie and they look beautiful. I honestly wish 2D animation would keep the rougher/sketchier look of their storyboards sometimes. Why does every every line need to be perfectly neat and straight? Some messiness would be welcome. And I think that stuff like the new Ducktales and Song of the Sea look gorgeous, by the way.
The big fad during the late 2000's recession were rubber bands.

I remember "Orbeez" (some people called them "Water Babies") as being a thing. They were just these little hard beads you dropped in water that grew. Thinking about it, the recession brought in a fad of cheap, useless crap that served as a type of form of escapism for kids while their parents quickly descended into bankruptcy. It was like if children had to rely on broken car parts for amusement after a nuclear holocaust.
Well, at the very least the creators were amateurs, and actually tried to fix what was originally much worse. Not that that makes the movie any good, but they tried.

This reminds me of The Amazing Bulk: the people just wanted to make a movie just for the heck of it, but made it with a very low budget, which made the film terrible and have out of place content. However, this film doesn't have memorable lines like "I hate dust!" and "Well, it isn't Barney the Purple Dinosaur!" The only memorable things in this film are the metal bunny and the unintentional corpse in the dumpster.
@Kafferlord Respect The Amazing Bulk??? That move was made as awful as possible on purpose because the creator knew there was kind of a cult around certain so-bad-they're-good movies he could cash in. It's the cinematic equivalent of that one kid at school that would act dumb, humilliate himself and use self-deprecating humor just so he could get some attention and cheap laughs.
Don't forget that running scene in The Amazing Bulk.

People have probably already mentioned it, but Croak just revived his career with Sanitizer-Bands. Basically a repurposing of his Silly-Bandz with hand-sanitizer in them.
I like it when Pan Pizza reviews obscure animation that almost no one remembers. He's one of the only cartoon enthusiasts I know that actually wants to talk about many of the unique things, both good and bad, that animation has to offer, instead of being another Teen Titans Go rant channel that complains about jokes meant for kids and how channels should only stick to their old cartoons and never experiment or go out of their boundaries.

I don't really remember the Silly Bandz trend, it came by and faded out into obscurity so quickly that I never even noticed it. Also, that CGI rabbit looks like it was made out of magnetic powder, and I'm guessing the entire budget of the movie went into that rabbit.

The rubber band movie is no different than what the Emoji Movie is now: A cash grab made by focus groups to desperately pander to kids for a quick buck. But at least the emoji movie wasn't made after emojis became a fad. However, at least the rubber band movie wasn't made by a big hollywood studio for a wide theatrical release. They're both horrible ideas that should never made it past the thought stage
I have less respect for the Emoji Movie because it's made by Sony Animated Pictures, so they obviously treated their employees like dirt while keeping all the money for their greedy asses. The Rubber Band movie was made just to get a quick buck off a cheap fad, not to rob others hard work for their own lazy asses.

Oisin O'Hanlon i believe that too. I watched more than 50 of his videos. Yes hes not perfect but so what? I got some entertainment even when hes not as good. Hes improving little by little
I was in my freshman year of high school when these were popular. Can't believe these were popular among people whose only other interests were playing Call of Duty, drinking, and smoking weed. The last anyone cared about these at my school was when a bunch of people found packs at Spencer's that were shaped like bongs and pot leaves. I think they got banned after the teachers saw that shit.
The recommended time to make an animated movie is 3 years, but this team did theirs in 8 months, and basically scrambled to do everything in the last 4? As someone who just finished writing a thesis at pretty much the last minute, I can really relate to that.

I remember these things. There was a kinda bootleg version going around when I was a kid, around 2008. When 2009 dropped and they became popular, EVERYONE had one.
I never found them all that interesting, but I admit, I wanted some. I guess I always thought they were pretty girly, which turned me away from them. All the boys had the "cool ones", while the girls had the "prettier ones." I wanted the pretty ones so bad, but was always too shy to buy them, :(

was honestly a girly kid, which is a trait I've still kept. Never liked any of the "boyish" stuff like war, monster trucks, etc, but I guess I felt inclined to hang out with the boys, which kinda forced me on them. Young kid pere pressure I guess.
Anyway, I'm not writing this to rant about gender stereotypes, lol. I distinctly remember these things because they were EVERYWHERE at my school. I remember owning a little blue dolphin one, and one that may have been a pink flower. If I remember correctly, one of my only female friends, (again pere pressure), gave them to me, after she heard me talk about how I wanted some of the more "girl" ones. I LOVED those things to death.
I must have carried that dolphin around with me EVERYWHERE for a few years. Then, of course, the boys began to make fun of me for it being too girly, and I began to hide it away. Mysteriously, I lost the poor dolphin a year or two later, on the playground somewhere, and never could find it.
I was heartbroken. It felt like I lost a friend; something that I loved dearly. Here I am, almost 10 years later, and I still somehow remember, and miss that poor rubber dolphin. ...and here I am again, those very same years later, posting a sob story about a rubber band and little kid gender pressure, that'll probably get lost in the pool of comments. I cry.

catbeweird that was the mist interesting comment I read throughout this whole page, well besides the one were everybody including me predicted what Mysterious Mr. Enter is gonna do when he reviews this movie after watching pans vid on this. but you made me remember the only girly toy I ever had and loved for some weird reason. I always liked boy toys and preferred them over ANY GIRL TOY. I like toy guns and weapons and action figure... Vehicals if they had any at least. and don't get me started on model cars, fucking live those things. but I had this one little purple stuffed rabbit that I named after some Pokemon I remember seeing on TV as joke and kept it in my room and every once in a while id sleep with it in my bed and put money in it and stitched it back up and some times id go outside by myself and throw it in the air like a football and catch it. the only person who knew about this was my big sister. I even once took it to school and when my friend questioned about it I jokingly said my little cushion left it in there. ah how I loved that damn rabbit thing. but on day I moved in with my grandma for like a month and when I moved out I left it in the closet all the way in the back at the top were nobody would find it. and one day like 3 weeks later my long lost cushions found it and gave it to their little baby brother and they left and went back up state and I never saw it again. my grandma told me they took it. I wasn't to mad because hey they gave it to a baby, but I was pissed. when my grandma asked why was i so mad about losing a baby toy? I told her because I had 20 dollars hidden in that rabbit and nobody will ever know it was stitched hidden inside. its probably been like 11 maybe 12 years I think I was in 6 grade or 7th because it was probably 2005 maybe. and I don't miss it as much.and it was definitely for the best, but I wish I could see were it is now. probably ripped apart buried in some dirt or at a garbage dump an nearly pitch black with a crap load of dirt covering it or something. or its maybe in somebody's house or shed boxed up. all I know is, I WANT MY FUCKING 20 DOLLARS BACK.
