- What are the don'ts of visiting Scotland? Your tour to Scotland can be fun-filled and extremely rewarding. Tourists have a lot of places to go, things to see, and things to do in Scotland. However, visitors can see the other side of Scotland if they do one of these 12 things not to do in Scotland. You can go back home with negative experiences if you’re not aware of the don’ts of visiting Scotland.
While you hike, tackle road trips as you enjoy some of the best islands in the world, you have to realize that Scots take exceptions to certain actions and utterances. To maximize the enjoyment of your visit, we hereby present in this video, 12 things not to do in Scotland.
1. Trying to Be Scottish
This is one of the things not to do in Scotland. When tourists from the US, or even other parts of the UK, regardless of their looks, claim to be Scottish, many things give them away because they are not. Having a Scottish distant relative doesn’t make you Scottish. In their pretense or supposedly belongingness, some try to do a Scottish accent.
All these aren’t endearing. The pretending tourists are eventually discovered as their accent will give them away. No matter how good you are, every place has its own accent that only natives can do well. The Scots feel mocked when you try to impersonate a local Scottish accent.
2. Asking Too Many Money-Related Questions
Basically, the pound sterling is GBP anywhere you are in the United Kingdom. Nevertheless, Scottish money appears different even though it is the same amount, currency, and value as what you spend in England. You don’t need to tell them in Scotland that this is weird, they already know that.
3. Discussing Soccer
The argument that will ensue when you call it soccer is the first thing experience that will teach you that this is one of the things not to do in Scotland. In the UK, it is called football. Besides, the British are very parochial about football such that each part of the Kingdom is a member of FIFA. In Scotland, they love their local team even though they’re not doing too well. Any superficial discussion about those teams and football, in general, will most likely end in a disceptation.
4. Talking About Politics
If your experience with discussing soccer is not nasty enough, try to talk about politics. You’ll then see how precious tourist time and resources can be wasted while altercating on matters with little or no direct bearing on tourists’ attractions.
Politics is a sensitive issue in Scotland. You should never be caught wondering about Scotland being part or no part of England. You can learn that not from Scottish people. This is because the history of English and Scottish people is complicated, controversial, and better storied. Therefore, any conversation around Scottish local politics or its state in the Union will end up worse than a conversation about soccer.

That bit about things being closed on a Sunday only applies to Western Highlands and Islands ,everywhere else Sunday is just another day and in the big cities it can be one of the busiest shopping days.
I'm not surprised as that was my question. As my elders have told me most everything in the U.S. was closed on Sundays up until the mid 70s. No I wasn't yet born for about another 10 years or so. Now days unless you're in a small town in the south of like less then 10,000 people or parts of Utah most everything will be open on Sundays. So really only smaller town close on Sunday's in Scotland is what you're saying??
I dunno what hes talking about but the post office is shut on a sunday, banks are closed everywhere, there's some shops open but business is deffos slower @carlgharis7948
One thing a visitor to Glasgow definitely SHOULD do is ask for a deep fried Irn Bru. The proprietor will be delighted at your knowledge of the local culture.
As a Scottish person, I do terrible Scottish accents because of all the American TH-camrs I lost my accent and am trying my best to get it back

I don't think people in any country particularly appreciate tourists taking an interest in their politics: once when I was in Greece many years ago a local resented my taking an interest in Greek politics
I live in Scotland and I go to s wonderful island called mil port off the coast of Largs and it’s shaped like a tooth
1. Partly agree, if your a tourist we would rather know where your from and will take interest in helping you. If you are a new immigrant to Scotland we take pride when you assimilate with our culture

I second this, some people will get overly heated about soccer/football teams (mostly in the west of Scotland) but they tend to be arseholes anyway

Clans do have tartans. I know what mine is, don't wear it, it's horrific. We've also tartans of different countries / nationalities. I love our Norway tartan. Although, Norway does have it's own tartans. Ours, you can almost see their flag.
Living in England over 30 years, I didn't know Scotland is a different country until I visited Scotland. All we hear about Scots is drug addicts benefit scroungers blah blah, I was very surprised that Scotland is such a beautiful country. Different law, beautiful landscape, attractive architectures of old buildings. Also, more friendly people, accommodation a lot cheaper than England. You can buy a large one-bedroom flat in a gorgeous old building for 70k in Glasgow, the standard much better than some parts of London, Birmingham and the north-west. Plus, all flats are freeholds in Scotland, you can not find a freehold flat in England, all are leaseholds apart from houses.
The myth that we are 'more firendly' lol. Try hitting the town centre on a Saturday night or moving in next door to your average Scottish nationalist nutjob if you dont look or speak the same.
Lomdon is a city in England i feel people should receive a pay for entering as its so unfriendly plus the water is terrible from the tap whereas in Scotland its best tap water in the World .

The same process and minimum standards apply to the treated sewage you are consuming, regardless of which city the tap it pours out of resides.

The comment when he says don't visit on Sunday's are nonsense, sure a lot of people see Sunday as the day of rest but I can assure you most shops and things alike are always open on a sunday
and don't call a loch a lock. Loch Ness has locks. If you ask a local where the lock is , they will point to the canal lock.

We just love having a laugh with people. We talk to anyone and honestly its just more about being nice like you would anywhere else. Its annoying when mostly Americans are like "heeeeeey my grandpa is 5% Scottish". No your no Mate your American cut your crap. That personally Annoys Me. Ive met lots of tourists and they all seem to be sound people.

I was in Scotland for a week in 19' and even with English grandparents and Scottish/Irish heritage as well, I wasn't foolish enough to say I was British lol. I will say Americans like me are very proud of our UK roots which is why you get the constant "I'm Scottish" or "I'm Irish". It's out of love. Sorry for all the loud Americans with their stupid questions and observations. They don't mean any harm, its just excitement to be there. We are the most annoying tourists though haha.
Scotland is an absolutely gorgeous country with wonderful people. I've been all over the world and Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited and will be back next year.

This video isn't really accurate. Sundays most shops are open, scots are proud of their clans, most people in Scotland have good humour and the whole what's under the kilt thing is generally quite a common joke. Though spot on with the accent and claiming scots ancestry, it is tiresome and not original. I have lived in Scotland from the age of 10 after moving from England and in general most people are tollerant of different political linings so long as it is a measured and well meaning discussion.
On the whole Scotland is a very welcoming country to tourists from absolutely anywhere in the world.

Much rougher parts in some other parts all around Scotland now inc some parts of the so called posh Capital city Edinburgh on outer areas of the city in which tourists do not see at all from Westerhailes , Drylaw , Niddrie , Pilton, Muirhouse to name some areas...and same with Dundee , Aberdeen and the many other run down also
ex mining communities in which were once busy now dead .

plus all the high rises in Glasgow have been so many bulldozed to the ground and re built with housing

As a Scot, I don't think any kilt wearers care that much about being asked what's under it... it's the question we're asked most often. What is annoying is people who try and yank your kilt up to have a look-see; that is rude!
