I absolutely agree with that for years I actually questioned belief later on in my 30s I found myself as a agnostic atheist leaning more towards atheist and yes still in my 30s still learning

Dem, age 65, northern european heritage, educated, female. At age 8, I absolutely refused to have anything to do with any religion. Atheist and zero regrets.
Same here.European(Greek living in greece now), 65 today and as far back as I can remember myself having thoughts about the subject(god,church etc),I always thought religious people are either hypocrites or ignorant.
At 15 I was trying to convert my mother who was lightly religious,believed in a god in the sky,and prayed sometimes.
I am still trying,she kind of realized that most of her "beliefs" were not rational or logical,and that priests are not "good leople"( after learning abt priests who were pedos,rapists etc. We have had many such criminals being uncovered in the last 40 years)
I never understood how they convince themselves that some old guy or some other kind of deity up in the sky helps them after they pray or sacrifice their first born😂...
It must be European thing,we have long history of religious conflict and church -state involvement, so we learn what priests are really early in life.
We have an advantage over the closed communities in rural America where perverts find refuge in religion , become priests of some cult and make millions from the stupids.
Good for you, that was really a feat back when you were 8. I would have been in my teens and was still trying to fit into religion. Though I knew it was bogus at about 6. Got in trouble at Sunday school for asking questions! 😂

Same, I recognized the truth at age 12 standing in front of a congregation asking for a sign, the silence was deafening. I am 71 today and never gave religion or belief in a god another second of my life.

It’s no surprise that the countries that rank highest for quality of life, education, life expectancy, economic equality are the most non-religious (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, etc). Humanity is slowly waking up to the truth about religion.
You might find that in countries not structured around religion, people aren't focused on it. The issues that the church was a part of is taken over by the public sector. It's even more manageable that way. If there is anything you want to ask about in that regard I'm Danish so I can probably answer most questions.
Add in Australia and New Zealand.
I would add that religion thrives in human misery. I'm cynical enough to suspect that's a significant motivation for the moneyed oligarchs to support religion by dragging down the American middle class and general standards of living.

Left the religion I was born in because of female subjugation. Went to more than 20 different a non-denominational protestant churches to find a new church home. Regrettably, they're all the same. Went unaffiliated in 2012. Was born in big city in California. Now I live in a mid-size city in North Carolina.
I feel that. I was born into a JW fam. 😐 Most aren't so super blatantly open about it as the JWs (and Mormons); but all of them still boil down to it.
The more biblically accurate a denomination is, the less equity there is. Once you realize that... what's the point?
Have you ever read the Bible (not just a few verses like most people)? They HATED women and placed them on the level of cattle. The Bible endorses buying, selling, and bartering of girls and women. It says grape is okay, as long as the grapist marries the girl if he gets her pregnant. Women aren't allowed to talk in church. Lot offers up his young daughters to be graped and god blesses him for it. Abraham had several wives, including his sister Sarah. That's just a small taste of it. Nothing has been more harmful to women than Abrahamic religions.
Why not leave the cult altogether? You already uncovered the plot.

Left the church when I was 16, never looked back. Couldn't take all the talk of eternal damnation for being gay. "In the eyes of the lord it is better to commit s***ide than to live a homosexual lifestyle" that was the last straw for me. Who tf says that to a kid?

Not surprising, their goal is to convert LGBT folks or make them disappear, by any means possible. Whether through legal suppression or through pushing us to end ourselves, they don't care either way. As long as we're gone. It's why I left the church, I asked them about my gay Christian friend and they got all concerned and told me his being a gay Christian isn't possible. I stopped returning soon after.

I was raised in a relatively conservative home where our faith was tied to our hope and sanity as my mom lost her battle with cancer. While we were not evangelical Christians, religion and faith had daily involvement in our lives and we seldom missed a Sunday service.
This summer, my dad and my step-mom (both in their fifties) were talking about how they were becoming disillusioned with organized religion and Christian practices in general. They’ve stopped attending church regularly and are openly speaking to me (an atheist since I was 17) about how they’re redefining their perspective and beliefs.
I don’t think either of them will distance themselves further than “spiritual but not religious,” because I know my dad wants to believe in heaven where he’ll see my mom again someday. But they’ve become more accepting and open to new ideas. What I’ve seen in them seems to be happening with many people out there. I never thought I’d see the day…

@@dwaneanderson8039 She's actually quite understanding. It might seem strange without context, and I may not have explained it all that well (I didn't want to ramble on more than I did). She accepts that my dad has loved before, as did she. My dad is not longing for my dead mom, but instead distantly grieves the connection like you would miss any lost loved one. I'm not in their relationship, so I do not know everything on the matter, nor do I believe in heaven, so the complexities of marriage there are not my concern. I can say that the topic is not taboo, and my dad and step-mom communicate about it and understand each other, and have found love and companionship together.
My dad used to say "I find reencarnation a soothing thought". I noticed that he left out whether he actually blieved in it. I don't believe that was a coincidence 🙂

This is encouraging. I think that part of why the 65+ is so white is that America has been becoming more diverse over the decades since I was born in 60. The youngest generation is more diverse and that will begin to drive society accelerating as the 65+ die off more. For me that hopefully means I get to spend my golden years observing an America changing for the better.

However, an important notewith church decline is, it makes it much harder for religion to enforce indoctrination on Christians or "nones" if they don't attend.
Which is why churches are trying to squeeze their way into public schools and target kids, because kids are not going to church.

I quit trying to live the fantasy at about 60 years old. It was a natural decline in church attendance, reading the Bible and praying that freed my mind from cult thinking. I slowly but, surely recognized the fantasy aspect of the entire religious system. Accepting reality was incredibly liberating! I know I’m probably the exception for my age but, I never did do what was expected of me! 🤣

The Catholic hospital here were I live always asks me my religion. I say none. I don't tell them I'm Wiccan. 😂

@@charisma-hornum-fries Most hospitals want to know religion if possible so they can accommodate their unique needs, if any. For example, if someone can't give or receive blood, if they can't eat certain foods, if they need access to religious support like a prayer room or clergy, etc. It's like how most hospitals also ask sexual orientation so they can educate patients or provide reproductive support more effectively. There are health and treatment implications with this information, and it's provided voluntarily. Experiencing discrimination because of these factors is lawsuit-worthy.

If I were you, I'd find another hospital, but not because of that question. Religious hospitals run according to their religion. Some services that go against their religion won't be provided. The culture of female subjugation in the Catholic Church transfers over to hospitals.

The 2018 census in New Zealand for the first time showed the largest group by religious demographic were “no religious belief” at 48.6%.
Christians were second at 37.3%, all other religion about 7% and the remainder declined to answer.
I'm looking forward to seeing the results of the 2023 census when they are released later this year.
New Zealand also consistently rates in the top five countries to live in world wide. In fact all the countries picked as “best places to live” were the more secular countries. NZ, Sweden, Norway, Australia, Switzerland.
The “worst places to live” countries were the most religious ones. Places like Afghanistan, Iran, etc.

The thing about `Unaffiliated` is that it doesn't necessarily mean atheist, or even non-religious. It just means not affiliated with any particular set religious denomination. However, if you speak to many of those people, they're mostly theists under the `Christian umbrella`. Just their own version of it. However, this is still great news, because it means despite upbringing, more and more people are beginning to think for themselves. You'll see the same trend in politics. `Independents` are now the largest group, even though most independents end up voting either Republican or Democrat.
Constructing your own truth is a good start, because it's just what the sects do without the tithes and tax evasion
Still a positive. I think I can speak for most when I say that the problem is not people having some sort of religious belief per se, but rather organized religion that exercises undue and harmful influence on politics and society.

I attend a church every Sunday because I'm my mother's primary caretaker. I've watched the number of people there dwindling through the years and not being replaced by the younger generation. Average age there is in mid to upper 60's. Some members are in the 90's. I know I wouldn't go on my own if I didn't have to take mom.

Atheism is an empty "-ism." There is no moral code or philosophy contained within it -- nothing to join one atheist to another, besides non-belief. Surely, there is some other "-ism" that more precisely describes what you BELIEVE.

I grew up in the south. The consistent message was that Jesus and America were right, everything else was wrong. Not different, WRONG. And the message also was EVERYONE recognizes this as true.

My mind was entirely blown when I went to college in the NE. The very notion that people weren’t all YEARNING to be American or Christian was totally new.
Needless to say, Christianity didn’t stand a chance once I knew that there were options!

Im not an atheist, Im an esotericist, but we have a history of being even more persecuted than atheists do. So we tend to function socially as atheists, generally we have similar levels of objection to organised religion and we support secular government and freedom of religion. Some of us are basically atheist with extra steps, and just find traditional practices therapeutic, some of us are more literal than that. I really think secularism is the way to go for everyone. Even if a person is religious they have to think "what if another religion gets stronger than mine and they can force me to follow their dictates?" Because suddenly then secularism is on their side. For the public square to functions in a secular manner is best for us all. Thanks atheists for all you do 😊

I am a man of faith, or so I claim, but ~90% of the people who also claim to be disgust "The Living Hell" out of me.
And I am probably being too generous with that number.
I left because when I was a child, an innocent child, god did not answer my prayers.
I'm a Christian or at least I believed in Jesus. However after seeing the push for Christian nationalism I'm just weary and stay away from organized religion. I still believe in God but I'm exhausted.
Life is hard. Religion only made it worse for me: Jesus = just another guy whose approval I have to worry about, who requires constant attention and he’s never there for me when I really need him.

I left 5 years and at first it was 50% "I don’t believe this stuff", 25% Trump crazies, and 25% misogyny.
Now it’s 100% all the above, plus a lot of other things.
I have an unusual religious POV, mostly n pas a non-Christian minister, but over the last few years I have come to truly question religion in every way.
I put it down to people watching the God's not dead movie franchise.
I suspect that it's largely a case of them dying off without being replaced. In the UK, significantly more Atheists have been self reporting, as younger people no longer care about being "Hatch, match and despatch" Christians.
I agree. As the Boomers are aging out, the numbers of “believers” decreases. It makes me smile. 😊

When you talked about people who answer ambiguously about their specific Christian denomination, I think you're maybe being too optimistic. Most people who are 'just Christian' don't know anything about religion except that they believe in Jesus and whatever the culture around them thinks that should look like.
I dated a guy who hated going to church and fought his mom about it as a kid and was finally given permission to stay home on Sunday morning when he was about 14. Yet he proudly displayed a big fancy Bible and a portrait of white Jesus in his house. And if asked would proclaim he was a christian, of course. But he had never read the book and hadn’t been back to church except for weddings and funerals in decades! Made me laugh. He had no idea about christianity at all and in no way whatsoever did he behave like a church member is expected to behave. The real kicker though was his trying to use the excuse of my “lack of religion” and leaning heavily into Paganism as a reason we needed to break up. He said his grandmother would turn in her grave if he married a witch. LOLOLOLOLOL. He sure didn’t care about that on sleepovers! 😂😂😂

Despite years of Sunday School, church services, singing in youth choirs, and summer bible camp, and an upbringing by strongly mainstream (even progressive) Protestant parents who truly believed, I just couldn't go through confirmation classes when I was 14. Any deity I worshipped had to prove he/she/they/it was rational, kind, and compassionate, not arbitrary, capricious, or "mysterious." So far, I haven't seen that proof.
The only true religion is the church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster lol . Pastafarians unite .

The difference is that places like San Fransisco and New York are havens of immigrants from all over the world both low skilled and high skilled. If you have tons of technicians from India, or a bunch of workers from Turkey, or financiers from Saudi-Arabia, or craftsmen from Brazil it's no surprise that the migrant cities are quite religious.

My personal stance is that religion works best on people who need what they can't get. It also serves as a scapegoat for people who otherwise would have little or no moral compass.

You should pay attention to age. The Pineal gland kicks in as the pituitary lessens. Spiritual endowment is heightened. Of course, for many, it is simply recognizing their mortality -- death awaits. Look at the charts with nuance and track a generation as it ages and possibly gains wisdom.
I left church as I became older and developed critical thinking skills and stepped back from the childhood indoctrination.
I was raised protestant in the Bible Belt; however, I left Christianity around when I was either 17 or 18. I left Christianity because as a gay person I came to realize the problematic and homophobic beliefs thay many Christians believe in and that the Bible expresses. I also started to learn how the Bible was actually made and how many stories in the Bible are eerily similar to some Pagan stories. I now belong to a religious minority that often gets overlooked in surverys like these. I identify as a Wiccan, Pagan, Polytheist & Witch. As a gay man and a Wiccan I will be voting Democrat because Democrats stand for equality, jusitce, inclusion and actual religous freedom especially when compared to Republicans. Republicans claim they love religious freedom until they learn that Witches, Wicccans, Voodoo practitioners, Santeríans, Pagans, Druids & so on exist.

This is consistent with what I’ve been observing, and the statistic hit me dead on. I was taken to church (Methodist) by my uncles (the why behind it being uncles and not my parents taking me to church is part of a much larger story). My extended family is very religious-appearing but at home we never prayed, talked about religion, though my dad stayed true to the “spare the rod spoil the child” philosophy. Whatever the milestones were I just followed along, except when I was excluded because my parents weren’t attending. (This is small town, people know people too well, and the church leaders knew who I was and who my parents were, and penalized me for it. I had to sit through the boring shit and was excluded from all the fun crap. I just went along until I was out of the house where I stopped any church affiliation (minus the 1 bible thumper I dated for a short time in college). In my 40’s I be been getting harassed more by my family about my beliefs. I knew I didn’t believe but wouldn’t call myself an atheist, but my family got the hint. It was in my 40’s that an uncle who is worried about my “afterlife” said the thing that made it all clear to me. He said that he knew I “accepted Jesus into my heart” because he was there. I don’t remember, but I just went along. My ah-ha moment came when he said to just think back to when I used to believe. 💡I thought and thought about it and couldn’t remember a time when I ever believed. I was there cause I had no choice. I didn’t believe, I never believed, and I won’t believe. Finally in my mid-40’s I can say out loud that I am an atheist. And I am a MUCH better person than those church on Sunday fake Christians are. I’m happy to see this much larger trend (I also like charts and graphs🤓). Gen Z is making the world a better place in all sorts of ways!
I think you are right about the undercount portion you discussed. My dad doesn't go to church anymore and hasn't been a fervent evangelical for at least 10 years. If you were to ask him, even in an anonymous survey, I think he'd say he is christian. He still even tithes even though he hasn't been to church in like 5 years.
It looks like Montana is less religious than NY. That is pretty fascinating to me given the narrative and politics
I live in rural, Northwest Coast of California. Only 136,000 people in the county. Dark Blue on his map of religious affiliation. Hardly anyone in the churches under 40. There is no Next Generation. I predict the END of Churches and the END of career Christians. They wallow in mediocrity.
Hemant, show how the crime rate is correlated to religiosity and to different religions.
Also, how does poverty correlate to religion? What are the known causalities and confounding factors? This are easy questions to ask and a hard ones to research.

I’m a lifelong atheist 68 years long to be exact, and I consider myself spiritual just not in a supernatural way. I think of my consciousness as my spirit. My belief is that I’m a part of a greater whole which in this case is the universe. The universe provided the elements and mechanisms that lead me to being here. This also allows me to observe the whole and to understand my connection to the whole. All this is goosebump inducing and none of it requires a undemonstrated unsubstantiated bald assertion identified as an inter dimensional wizard living outside space and time.
Ex-christian here, many friends and family members have left the faith as well.

Voting early or by mail is great. But there's one drawback we should be aware of.
Republicans are more likely to vote in person. When they do, they find mostly other Republicans at the polling station because so many DEM voters vote early. So these Republicans get the impression their community is _heavily_ Republican. And then when it comes to counting votes, the poll station vote counts happen fastest and the early voting results show higher GOP numbers. Later in the evening and the next day, as the early and mail votes are added in, the vote count shifts towards the DEMs.
Both these factors play into the "voter fraud" lies the GOP spreads. GOP voters have a false sense of the number of DEMs in their neighborhoods, and they see the vote count shift away from them after polls close.
The answer is to be a visible Democrat. Have a yard sign. If you can vote at the polling station, then consider doing so. Wear a blue shirt. Be seen as a DEM voter in your community. This will embolden other DEMs to do the same, and this will make it harder for the GOP to spread its "voter fraud" lies.

It took me till age 26 to fully become a non-believer. My immediate family is protestant and fanatical. The extended family is Catholic and laxed about it.
Soon the chants will be "Nones will not replace us!"

A lot of these maps are misleading. I don't disagree with your conclusions or anything, but, for example, when you're treating co-religionists of different races as different components of religious diversity, I'm not sure I'd really take that all that seriously.
Obviously they compiled data the way they did for reasons (the politics parts are obviously important), and I'm sure that with the full data set, you can chop it up in a variety of different ways to explore specific questions better.
Hence the saying: “there's lies, damn lies and statistics” ;)😅
Of course things politically will have to change - the religious groups' feed troughs are getting smaller and smaller. That's exactly why they are trying to push religion in schools and in public life
Some people mainline Protestantism, some people just snort it.
40+ years ago I read in a magazine an interview, where this teenage British lady was asked about her religion. Her answer? "I believe in God but not in church." That basically sums it up.
I think that as they get smaller, they are radicalizing more. I grew up very Baptist, and I don't recognize the religious landscape now. People that would have been considered very fringe when I was growing up are mainstream now. Things that were fringe when I was a kid, aren't anymore. The moderates are the ones who are leaving, and the ones who are left are just going to get crazier and crazier.
That said, at the same time, I also see a reaction against the radicalization. As counterintuitive as it might sound, you're getting radicalization and at the same time the last vestiges of reasonable evangelicalism are trying to assert themselves. That's the impression that I'm getting, at least.

As well, what truths are these people searching for and how will they know when they find it?
I am an atheist, but I have no problem with people being "None." I don't think everyone needs to be a declared atheist. In fact, I would prefer if people just considered not believing in gods as normal, and we didn't need a special term for it.
It annoys me when people think California isn’t Christian. There were many Christian religious movements that originated in California in the 20th Century: The Foursquare Church, Campus Crusade for Christ, the Crystal Cathdral, Calvary Chapel, The Vineyard Church, Saddleback to name a few. The coasts aren’t a religion free zone. But yes attendance is shrinking.
It must be Hollyweird that put these ideas in my head that we should defend the little guy, that people are worth fair treatment, that the greedy and powerful are to blame for excess human misery. George Bailey yelling at Mr Potter ... shame on them!

My wife and I are committed followers of Jesus, never Trumpers and politically independent. We view Trump as a threat to both nation and the Church. Something else, where I come from in southern Iowa is 99% white, mostly farmers...yet nearly half of the voters went for Obama. Religiously unaffiliated does not imply mean "no faith." It often means people who are not members of a denomination or do not wish to be classified as supporting some viewpoint they considered an essential to whatever faith group they are closest to. For example my wife and I are white AND evangelical but loath being identified with the Trump supporting, Republication worldview.
I look forward to the day when the magical thinking, delusion, hatred, and general irrationality of organized religion can be removed from politics and public discourse. Unfortunately, being in my late 50s, I am not sure I will live long enough to experience it.
