Yamaha YPG-235 Talking about Functions and Features

  • This is not a "tradition product review." I'm talking to you conversationally, upfront, and honest about this keyboard. I love this keyboard, but I'm not going to pretend it's the greatest thing available; it depends on your individual needs. I'm being realistic about the YPG-235, the way I would have wanted someone to talk to me about it, prior to making the purchase.

      That’s awesome! Good luck to you! Not that I’m any expert, but I can tell you from my own experience..2 years ago I decided I was finally going to get serious about playing piano. Having been a guitar player for a very long time, I just needed a different challenge (not implying I’ve mastered everything about guitar, lol). Anyway, here’s how I got to where I’m at now, which is a place of self-confidence: I plugged in my headphones to my Yamaha, and I played and played and played. To the point of exhaustion sometimes. I’m just encouraging you to keep it up, because you’re gonna surprise and impress yourself with just how much progress you’ll make, simply by repetition. I just read what I’ve written to you, and it seems kind of corny, I guess, lol. But it’s all true, so I’m just gonna post this. The best of luck to you! And your daughter! Take care. 🎹🕊🙏🏻

    Great video! I learned so much from you in these short 11 minutes than I have trying to read the manual! I've had my keyboard for a month now and received the 30 day survey from Yamaha asking about my experiences. I explained that the manual was difficult to understand. Think it will make a difference to them? I don't. lol. Thank you so much for your time that you put into making all your videos. Glad you care enough to help everyone out!!

    Hi. Thank you for the info on the 235. I wanted to know how to do pre-sets and found your video, and you explained it well. THANK YOU. To return the favor, I have some examples of when you might use some of the features. I probably won't make a video as you suggested, but for you and anyone else who reads this, here we go.
    Split - The obvious use is when you have two sounds and one instrument. Or even if you use two, which I do, sometimes you still need more. A good example is "What I like about you" (Romantics). We don't have a harmonica, so I split the upper side to do that and use the lower side to play chords. Maybe a better use is when I'm individually recording. Sometimes the bass is just too loud. I split it and use the same voice and drop the volume on the bass.
    Tuning - Sometimes artists speed up songs a little in post production. In modern technology, that's not an issue for pitch. "Werewolves of London" is a good example of a song that's between half steps. I think that must have happened in post production when they apparently sped it up. God rest Warren Zevon...
    Pitch Bend - A good example of a song to use this is for "All I wanna do" (Sheryl Crow). That opening slide riff is hard to do on a keyboard. The pitch bar makes it a cinch. You go from an A# to an A pretty easily. It seems to go 2 half steps either way. The other song I've seen it used is during the solo for "Something" (Beatles). There are a couple of bent notes in there.
    One other subtle thing I use is the M-volume setting. That's the master volume and if you need more umph, you can actually raise that a little higher than it's default setting, and you'll get more volume.
    One thing you mentioned is the dual layer with strings below a piano voice. I think that's really useful if you're performing alone and you want get a richer sound. You have to make it very subtle, though, or it sounds like you're doing something fake. But, a light string (050) with a little reverb (25) under a piano with a lot of reverb (45) goes really well for individual playing.
    Thanks again. I'll bookmark this page and if others want to share tips, I'd love to read them. I agree that some of those features are obscure and some of them you can't begin to think of why you might need them. But, you hit on some good ones, especially the configuration pre-sets. Thanks for that. Much quicker than reading and figuring it out. I appreciate your help.

    • @Haffmatthew
      @Haffmatthew 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@justin3161 you can record on the computer using free software such as Audacity (windows or Macintosh) using the keyboards headphone port on the back- which I believe takes a 1/4 style audio cable which you would use an adapter cable to have it go to your computers audio input or microphone port. Open audacity and configure the settings to record the input you plugged in and away you go!
      Or you use a usb b male (keyboard side) to usb a male cable (standard usb cable size) and use a program such as GarageBand to record on using the Yamaha as a MIDI controller interface. Very versatile

      I found 1 of these and a Peavey KB60 keyboard amp. Also a broken Korg M-1 with a rusty stand. Fixed the Korg bought a new 2 tier stand and 2 of the right pedals. Then found a new can of Rust-Oleum black metallic spray can. So sanded down the old stand lubed the connections and sprayed this stand. Now I got enough keyboard stuff for a semi pro setup. Unfortunately I'm a guitar player and don't know keyboards. Time to learn I guess.

      That’s a cool grandpa! Excellent find, royspod! And to Sparky, hilarious way to end that story! 😂 I’ve been a guitar player for 30 years, and it’s only been the past 2+ years that I’ve started really trying to play piano and synths seriously. So I get your point completely. You’ve made yourself an awesome rig! I’m just encouraging you, as a fellow guitarist, to go for it with the synths!!! It has made me a better musician overall, and has shown me new ways to approach chord voicings which were previously unavailable (or at least unrealistic/non-conducive) from a guitar perspective. Plus, synths are simply gentler on the old fingers. Anyway, good luck to you both! 🕊

    I've had a 235 for almost 11 years now and its genuinely one of the most durable keyboards ive ever seen. Around two years after getting it, i had it in my bedroom and my roof began leaking rainwater almost every night. My 235 sat right underneath the leak and most keys got soaked. We got the leak fixed but damn the 235 still played just fine. My one criticism is that sometimes when i play the speakers make this quiet but noticable static sound, so i can only play it on medium volume without issues, but thats most likely from wear and tear. Otherwise its awesome

  • @tarmanaziz5518
    @tarmanaziz5518 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great video! I agree many features are just kind of "there" and hard to know when I would use them for my mostly classic rock 60s / 70s cover band setting. The Tuning feature is however great when accompanying say a 12 string guitar player who tuned their guitar in between pitches / slightly off pitch (avoids guitarist re-tuning 12 strings while audience waits - you just adjust quickly to them with the tuning feature.) Same for accompanying a woodwind or brass solo player - some instruments just don't seem to play exactly with your C, but they are also not playing C-sharp, more like something in between. So the tuning feature I feel has a place.

    • @Films128
      @Films128  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a great point. I never thought about how this keyboard may accompany other instruments, and then the tuning could be extremely useful. Great point!

    • @LegendaryMike
      @LegendaryMike 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes. This is helpful for playing with Orchestral instruments being that they tune off of frequencies. For instance, a violinist might play an A and the pianist might play an A. But the two might sound like different notes. The Violin might be tuned to an A 440 and the piano might br tuned to an A 340. The tune function on the yog 235 can help the pianist reach the frequency of the violinist.

    • @Films128
      @Films128  6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Yes, the pedal (which is very inexpensive on amazon) is for the sustained sound. You can also program the keyboard to make the notes sustain without a pedal, although a pedal is better. This video here shows how to set it up to sustain without a pedal. th-cam.com/video/c81YVl8mUBc/w-d-xo.html

    I had a similarly designed dgx 230 ( which I now wish I had never pawned ). The dgx/ypg series was a moneymaker for Yamaha. These were some of the best keyboards on the market for the budget conscious musician. If you are a beginner it's good because there are many resources to help get you started. If you are an intermediate student/player ( as I am ) you can grow into it and mature into a gigging musician ( that's still what I aspire to ). I will buy a replacement as soon as feasible

      I use mine daily for writing, performing and recording music. I made an album with this keyboard and am nearing completion on a second album. I don't have any plans to replace it until it needs to be replaced... I guess once something goes wrong with it, then I'll be in the market for a new one. It does enough of what I need, and nearly everything I do gets filtered and edited through my computer. So any limitations it may have go away once I work on my music with the computer.

    how you doing ? in the owners manual it tells you how to record a song then record part of it .starting point A end point B (A/B) REPEAT.. then that portion of the song will play over and in a loop. you need to hold down the record button and both the a/b and loop (there is a small circle with arrows going round) i am trying to do it again .. so step 1; song/user (31-35) there are 5 user songs,,,,record your song.. step 2 record your track...step three .record desired length of track in A/B REPEAT...start stop A/B repeat ..i actually did it twice, the first time was a fluke. and im trying to replicate the sequence with no luck..the metronome keeps kicking in.. but i will say this IT CAN BE DONE a continues, uninterrupted looping track in back round you can play over
    i think the key element is to record in one of the.> USER 1.2.3.4.5

    • @Films128
      @Films128  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see that repeat function, but to me, that seems like just a repeat option for a song to play over and over. I can't see a way to loop for example, a drum rhythm you create. To have a beat looping, as you record more layers in... I don't see any way for that to happen with this model keyboard.

    • @mikebquick
      @mikebquick 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      the one loop can keep you in rythm.you can record anything you play be it piano or truppet or drum s or even pre recorded drum beats from style ..in manual it says you can over dub..but that is yet to be seen .hey thanks for reply

      I still have it, use it daily. I've never tried taking it apart though. I wonder if you'd have success just spraying "contact cleaner" in between the keys??? Or maybe it won't reach that actual contacts. Might be worth a try before taking the whole thing apart though.

    my question is, are the keys sort of fully weighted? or are they really light on the touch?

    • @Films128
      @Films128  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They are in the middle... They are FAR better than the cheap thin plastic on less expensive keyboards. There is more weight to them, and their "push back" against your fingers feels to me, close to a piano. BUT, they are definitely not that full weighted feel that matches exactly to real pianos, that you would get from higher end models.

    Does this have one button chords that match the tone..organ, violin, trumpet etc and not like the casio that makes no sense to have since the chord sound is not close to the tone being used nor does it sustain.

    One more question Film128, can I record my keyboard along with style ...save and send it all to my computer and upload to social media? I understand what your saying about using different tracks. However I can't imagin my style of music playing, being divided up into different tracks? Another question if I play this 235 keyboard notes along with style at the same time. Once saved can you divided it up meaning put the style on one track and the keyboard on another track.....

    • @Films128
      @Films128  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can output everything at once via headphone jack to microphone jack. If you record a style/accompaniment sound with your playing, you can divide those two. By default, the style will always record on its on track.

    • @MaxwellBennett789
      @MaxwellBennett789 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      films128 thank you for your help. I'm assuming from that point I can upload to TH-cam. your on TH-cam, you must live where you can record without headphones?

    • @Films128
      @Films128  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I do. One thing you can also do is run the line from the keyboard's headphone jack to the computers microphone jack, AND, also have a pair of headphones hooked up to the computer. So that way you can still accomplish all the same tasks, and still be wearing headphones if needed!

    • @Films128
      @Films128  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No setting should be causing that. Volume level has no effect on it? I'm trying to rule out speaker issues... In fact, if you try headphones, does it behave the same way with intermittent sound?
      The keys weren't hit really hard, were they? Like, for example, a child slamming them?
      Last idea... Has it sat for a while? Damp environment? Wondering about corrosion on the contacts under the keys.

    The feature of tuning the piano is obvious to musicians who play with others. I guess you just play by yourself? For instance, a tune is written in the key of B which means B flat instruments are playing in C# which sucks for us. Piano can tune up from C to C#, play the B key chords/melody as written but now Bflat instruments play D scales and its WAY easier for us. I play Tenor Sax (Bflat) so there you go.

      @Films128  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's actually two videos I did on this subject - links below. Short answer, YES. I think it's a GREAT keyboard to learn on.
      This video I did on tips for learning - th-cam.com/video/igSIKWNaB3E/w-d-xo.html
      This one I did on the keyboards' "teaching" modes, which I don't like - th-cam.com/video/NPZSs8jSY6s/w-d-xo.html
      I'm not trying to push my videos on you for view counts. I just really make these to help people, especially with this or a similar keyboard. So along with those, you may want to listen to a few other videos I did and see what you think of the sound that this keyboard can make.... if you like what you hear, or it's not what you're looking for.
      Hope this helps!

    Great video. For 8 years old kid. If you were to choose between this one and Yamaha np 31 which one you pick and which one is more closer to an acoustic piano? Also what about casio CTK 3200 or wk245? Please advise.

    Thanks

    • @Films128
      @Films128  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the ypg-235 offers a lot more options than the np-31. Sure, most of the those options aren't needed for someone just learning, but there's a lot to grow in to. And with the prices as high as they are, I'd want more for my money. I've never been a fan of Casio, to be honest. I'm sure they'd be fine, but any Casio I've owned either felt fake, sounded like a toy, or eventually had internal issues.
      I'm no expert though! I'm just someone who likes to play piano and keyboard, so it's just opinions here and on my channel. :)

    I enjoyed your presentations. Below are two other suggestions that may make the YPG 235 an even more versatile keyboard.
    The YPG 235 keyboard does not have a very sturdy music rack ,as some of your readers have commented about. There is a modification that is available on the website bellow that will strengthen the rack considerably and maybe eliminate the need for purchasing a separate music stand.
    psrtutorial.com/music/projects/musicrack.html
    Also, another mod. that can be made to the board that will prevent the speakers from being cutt-off if you plug in a cord to the earphone jack for remote amplification. This may be used if you want to use the onboard speakers as monitors. The You Tube site is for a DGX-640 but it applies to the YPG-235 also.

    • @Films128
      @Films128  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Blake Jones It has a total of 489 voices. About the last 20 or so are sound effects, which don't really sound that great at all. Most of the voices are really good. Some have a "midi" sound, and I tend to stay away from those. But for the most part, out of 489, there's plenty to work with.

      To be honest... not really. I went from a really cheap keyboard to this one, so I'm not sure what lies in between. But keep in mind you want a keyboard that you can "grow in to." You don't want something too basic that you'll find barriers when you want to start getting more creative.

      with a cheaper less-featured keyboard you'll be wanting more in about a week so don't worry about this one having too much. the initial complexity will eventually just turn into just more options and you will be glad for that extra control and depth. Go for quality not simplicity.
