- A bird that can reach over 200mph, filmed in slow motion! The Peregrine Falcon.
The peregrine falcon is the fastest animal on the planet capable of reaching over 200 miles per hour. It's also an animal that many people have seen as it can be found in many cities because the tall buildings replicate their natural cliff habitat.
I had never personally seen one in the wild that wasn't a spec on a building or off in the distance as a silhouette. So, the other day after hearing about a juvenile in the area, I set off to try and see one that is not only in it's natural habitat but also within filming distance.
Behaviour:
(Spoiler) For those of you who may be interested, there is a moment in this video in which I label the peregrine as hunting. However a few people pointed out to me that may not be the case. So, I contacted an expert on urban peregrines call Ed Drewitt (he currently has a book available linked below). I showed him the footage and below was his response
"Yes, this is definitely a young bird in hunting mode. At this age they may also 'play' hunt where they are exercising and chasing other birds to practice. However, these footage pieces do look like the peregrine was deliberately trying to go for the black-headed gull and the crow, although if it had been really serious it would have probably have caught them. At this stage the bird is still learning and practicing, and will have lots of missed attacks."

Beautiful footage of a beautiful bird, we are so lucky to get a chance of seeing the Peregrine in the U.K. considering they were very nearly wiped out. Well worth a sub!

Thank you so much Chris! And that's really interesting to hear they get along well near you. In my experience it's only when they are flying clearly out in the open that birds like the gulls will dive at them. But they will take a meal anywhere they can get it really 😊

Omg, what a fantastic experience, and superb close up footage to show for it. Felt quite emotional watching the youngster take the bird from the parent - absolutely stunning - and the parent watching as it flew off. Your best video yet, methinks, and I hope your camera survived ok!

Perfect accompaniment to pt I. I know you must be a fickle master when it comes to shots shown but the hunting parent stuff was visceral enough to be bona fide 'good stock', never going to get more than one opportunity like that on any given 'first' afternoon and then have the heads up to be fully prepared. Would be nice to be under contract via beebs NHU and have a few weeks stab at it! As it is jaw dropping stuff, all of it - hunt included. Loved it Matt, a joy. Si.

It would be a dream come true to watch something like this! Peregrines are winter migrants here, and we don't get to see them from such a vantage point.

this is awesome! I've been in Bristol for just over a year now but still not seen any peregrines despite keeping my eye out when on the bridge etc. I guess it takes a lot more than that. Would love to be able to film/photograph them one day
Hi Alex! Yeah there is a path leading from the bridge that goes along the cliffs. Its about 20 minutes, maybe a bit more before you reach that spot, but there is a sign telling you to look out for them. So you were nearly there but not quite unfortunately :D. I hope you get to film them next year :)

Impressive footage, well chosen and edited music, smooth follow up to part 1 (domestic vs wild). Appreciate your candor about difficulties of the shoot. If wet feathers are a problem, what do the falcons do when it rains? Do they refrain from hunting? (Perhaps order take out 😁.). If they tend to nest each season in the same locale my guess is that you’ll return for another go at filming. BTW, nice haircut😁. Cheers!

I don't know for sure so it would be mainly guess work, but I assume it's a case of them taking a long time to dry out and not being able to fly at all when wet, rather than a case of them getting wet being the kiss of death. Great film there. I’ve stood at the exact same spot a couple of times and it is so exciting to watch them perform. Not got my best shots there (The Andover birds are better for stills IMO) but the action at your spot is so great to watch unfold.

Looking forward to this. Wondering though, Is a bird an animal? Funnily enough, it is in German. In English I'd never call a bird an animal, but maybe that's just ignorance (or depends on what version of English one speaks?) [not trying to be stroppy, I think about these things :-) ]
Hiya Tom, glad you are looking forward to the video! And not to worry, it's good to question things 😊. It's all to do with scientific classification, birds belong to the kingdom animalia, the same as mammals, reptiles, fish and insects which also get questioned a lot 😊.

Hi Don, always happy to be proved wrong but having googled it the bot fly apparently reaches around 20 miles per hour, you need to add a zero to reach peregrine speeds. Happy to be proved wrong if you can provide evidence 😊
