  • A few sonic samples showcasing a big part of my live performance setup using Jam Origin's Midi Guitar 2 in Apple's MainStage 3 for guitar to MIDI control and access to an endless supply of great soft synths. #MIDIguitar #chapmanstick #electronicmusic

While the technology is revolutionary to not require a divided pickup, I experimented with the settings in the Jam Origin demo for about an hour and found the same amount or more ghost/bad notes happening compared any other midi guitar system I've tried no matter how I set the input/tracking controls. I guess the bottom line is guitar to midi still isn't there yet, and in my experience I'll stick with the divided pickup system I already have. Whatever system you use it seems "good enough" and you will always have to adjust your playing to avoid droning or finger muted strings. Then go through the piano roll and delete all the garbage that happens from misinterpreting finger slide noise or strings dancing on the cusp of volume thresholds.

While this is an imperfect system, much like the other hardware options that have been around before, the fact that this is software based without the need for a divided pickup does have many advantages. For one, it plays much nicer with soft synths. Plus, if you run it in a DAW or a performance application like Apple's MainStage, there are many options for the tracking to be more precise. Choosing the range (much like the Axon units), choosing the scale, and layering synths over the instrument sound. I think this will always be an imperfect technology, but I've been using MIDI guitar for live performance in the last couple of years and still consider it to be superior to anything else out there.

NIMA REZAI Hi, by the way your video demonstration is excellent I failed to mention. Thanks for the response. I could only imagine having such honed skill would help articulate the midi notes properly, but that’s something I could only dream of ;)

Thank you Gregory! I appreciate it. Believe me, it's still a hit and miss for me. I've just been able to get my setup to a place where i can pull it off even with some minor mistakes :)

Have any of you 13 pin guys tried using the 6 individual string outputs from say, a vg 99 & run 6 different inserts of midi guitar, 1 synth per string? My intuition is telling me it might get better tracking that way.

I used to do that on my Axon unit and got pretty good results cause between that and using different zones, you could do pretty much anything. Way better than the VG-99. Although the VG is still a big part of my setup, I never use it for guitar to MIDI. Running MIDI guitar 2 into software, I still specify note ranges and layer various synths. Although the 6 individual string method using the old axon notes may have yielded better results on the margins, it was a massive pain if like me, you have a ton of presets. Plus, their software is no longer supported which makes it impossible. Between flexibly and easy of use and editing, I'm quite happy with MIDI guitar.

Wait so you are or aren't using a midi pickup here? Don't they make those in the newest Sticks for the highest 6 strings? Im gonna have to get one of these and do what you're doing eventually for my band hahaha

I think you're referring to the Roland GK pickups which Stick ent has had for a long time. In fact, all my instruments have them on both melody and bass sides. Those are good if you're using Roland processors and want to use their V guitar platform. But they're not accurate at all when it comes to triggering external synth. What this does is convert audio signal to MIDI and gives you access to and hardware and softsynth of your choosing.

I'm curious: how did you get the software to work with the lower strings? I want to use it with my 8 string (F# B E A D G B E) but can't get the software to recognize any notes lower than D. Any advice?
    Also, phenomenal playing!

I use the bass version of the software for the lower strings as it tends to read low notes much better. Hope that helps, and thank you!

@NIma Rezai: what kind of Roland hardware are you using in the video?
