I put wheels sideways to run on the walls so my tunnel borer was self centring on the newly constructed walls. I also added a projector to the tunnel blueprint so just before the tunnel ended it automatically built a new projector for the continuation.
Multiple projectors are expensive though, it's better to create and then destroy so you're using the same resources multiple times. Or you can just attach your rover back to the grid using merge blocks and timers, there is one on the workshop that is like this but it suspends in the air so it's super sketchy, having the wheels on the ground makes it so much better, or building a railway and the tunnel bore can be a tram??
I did the same thing with the wheels, but I use 2 projectors running 2 sections and then swap one over the other, less resources used and more efficient 😎👍
@@HashMyth Ah I see the mistake in my eggsplanation, my blueprint places the projector but it has no components to build it, when the section is built I grind the old projector to build the new, and upload the road/tunnel blueprint.
I don't play the game but find it interesting and want to try it eventually after seeing a bunch of these videos, my question though is this, isn't there a way to put the projector on the rover so the rover projects the blueprint itself without having to keep building new ones or moving the old one somehow
@@sullyhet Using the new automata blox I am attempting this task, so far I have a 10-20% success rate. The problem is getting exact alignment from a body that was in motion.
Steel plates don't pass through small conveyor ports. So your design won't work as intended in survival, only creative. If you rebuild this to work in survival here are some suggestions: 1. Be sure the welders have continuous large port access all the way up to the connector. 2a. If you add a few survival kits, you can use the drilled stone manufacture the steel plates that you need. 2b. If you add a conveyor sorter and a few ejectors, you could eject silicon wafers, nickel, and gravel so that the cargo containers don't fill up with resources you're not going to need. 3. Run this again in survival to be sure it works all the way around. Creative is okay. But it should work in survival to be a valid result.
Can also build a dump truck that catches that excess material as it ejects it as well and haul it back to a refinery at the tunnel mouth. It keeps u busy while it is building the tunnel and is Kool. I am building construction vehicles that work like the real ones. You can also build a monorail/rails behind the machine as it goes and use train like bucket cars.
2 Projector suggestions, Build a section of road as long as the maximum projector range, in the center of the road bed place a projector, save this to clip board. Then load it onto the projector and align it, once aligned , save this version to clipboard and erase first one with unloaded projector. Now when you build the tunnel, the end of one section automatically starts projecting the layout of the next section with no intervention. Second suggestion, instead of all metal block floor and wall design with a reinforced conveyor tube line and build a connector at the beginning of the tunnel by hand, that way when full the tunneller just slaps don a connector in the road where ever it is and offloads to the entrance of the tunnel, it also sets out future supply routes for base growth.
If you attach 4 pistons and 1x1 wheels in the rover portion of the craft you can use the tunnel walls to keep you straight. Also, if you are not afraid of scripts, there is a transmit/receive script out there with which you could increase the forward offset of your projector from the rovers hotbar. It might save some time, even if the first time using it takes up a few minutes to get used to. It sure comes in handy for future projects.

You are welcome, since you provided the input I could not claim to be the one with the idea. I always give credit where credit is due. As for the rear wheel addition, I actually tried that first but it was to compensate for the stone it traveled over. The uneven terrain caused the machine to drift and even with extending side wheels it still moved quite a bit. However, that is another genius idea, with having a smooth terrain one may be able to add pistons with either gear or rotors/wheels to center the machine. Could potentially achieve a total autonomous drilling/ tunnel machine without the use of scripts.
Dude, you have no idea. I developed my own mining/tunneling machine few years ago, eventually added a survival kit on it few months ago for the sake of making ingots from stones, and now i'm working on the welding tip system on it! I'm actually struggling with the welding process since it's all small-grid and ends up causing me to add 3x3 "medium" (small grid) conveyors and whatnot to make it work. I looked around for anything like this until now! I think the algorithm actually delivered for once. I'm definitely gonna watch this and maybe learn something new from this! Planning to post mine on Steam Workshop when i'm done.
I gave it a lookover during the video, and there's few commentaries which is pretty much similar to the recent comments; 1) this definitely looks like it was built in creative mode and not in survival mode. 2) the wheels, i now noticed that they are drive by rotors which is something you do not want to drive on, because they have no control on turning around. you're better off with the ol regular suspensions+wheels. 3) you don't want have any pistons holding or supporting any drills, you want either conveyor pipe or regular block supporting the drills instead of pistons. 4) the welder tip (small grid) requires 3x3 (medium) conveyor pipes so the steel plates will be freely passing through them instead of small-grid small conveyor pipes. The devs did this on purpose so you know. 5) Make sure that the drills is in parallel above the ground, not literally grinding against the floor but like just above it where it's not damaging the blocks underneath but enough to grind down the stones in front of it. This is possible if you have suspensions/wheels so you can adjust the heights on those wheels. not on rotors+wheels unfortunately. And lastly, for steam workshop, if you blueprint it, (CTRL+B) at your machine, you'll see it. you can rename to the title in your mind and then you can see "publish it to workshop" button, and it'll upload to the workshop on steam. Have fun mining!
I have a large grid build that is similar to this but still way different, The blueprint I have for the roadway and tunnel is 21x 60 large grid, with large grid projector and I have zero issues, the only time it starts to fall at the end of a blueprint is due to the blueprint is not in the proper position, try to go forward or backward one block to get it exactly where it needs to be, hopefully that helps, but I am also doing just the roadway, and the sides go up 2 blocks, then every 20 blocks I have a support arch that goes all the way up 12 blocks then across the roof of the tunnel, I worry about building the rest of the walls and rooms with several other purpose built rigs, one other thing I found that helps my rover, is to add controls to lock steering to your bar.
That is good advice, I will definitely try adjusting the projection settings to see if it will improve the process. Sounds like you are building an impressive tunnel structure, adding support arches 12 blocks and across could definitely provide a wonderful accentuating design. Thanks for the tips!
you don't need to build new projectors, remote access the original projector move the same section in the x, y or z path, as long as there is contact with the existing grid, it will still build. see if you can use a timer to automatically move the projection 3 blocks in the required direction every 3 minutes. See about adding refineries and assemblers, then using a track of conveyors, with occasional connectors to process the resources and power the drill, manually locking and extending pistons at first to learn the timing then add timer blocks.
Really cool set up. The continuous projector set up is what I always hated. I have a simple solution. Create a projection of a road that is super long. I have one that is 1.3 KM. Only need it once. Its real handy in knowing where your tunnel will come out.

Then just swap to the Blueprint of the road u want. Its also super useful as a Geological measuring stick or a level in finding out what spot on an object far away is level with something else. In other words it acts like a Theodolite surveyors tool.
Good suggestion. That is one part I did not consider when establishing the tunnel was the altitude change between one side of the mountain to the other. Will definitely use that tip when marking out the rest of the mountain
I build my tunnel machine in an inch-worm design, that connects to the base on every step and can work automatically as long as there is enough material.
I've done something like this before, Difference is I had a Full tube Projection, and the projector was on the Truck, it would Maglock Down, the Drills & Welders push forward n PIstons, It had small Sideways Wheels with Friction at 0 so slides on the bottom and sides for stability, Once it's full extended, retract Drive forward and lock down again, repeat, I did it manually but you could set this all up with timer blocks,
@@mastermindgameplay5297 have not tried this, But if you put 2 Pistons with separated Magplates so it climbed the Wall it might. But I've used many Ships with downward drills and just go strait down for Perfect shafts.
So a few questions; What is happening to the stone? Is it being processed, is the survival kit able to process fast enough? Is the stone providing enough steel to build the tunnel with? If not on either of those, would it be possible to integrate a conveyor system into the ground of the tunnel that the drill periodically connects to so as to send stone to be processed and receive materials? Could the connecting for resupply and offloading be handled via timer blocks? Likewise could the projection be moved periodically using a timer blocks? Sorry if that is a lot, but I feel like there are so many unanswered questions and unexplored possibilities for automating this further.
Unfortunately the survival kit does not entirely keep up with the construction unless the machine’s rotors are less than 0.30 velocity. However, you are onto a great idea! I. The center of the tunnel floor if one were to install connectors to reload and unload then that could be a possibility to exchange periodically with a larger grid. Or potentially use additional survival kits to break down the ore and create steel plates. One more concept that comes to mind is using a large connector, built on a vertical piston, lock to the connector on the machine, and then remove the blocks from the large connector. Essentially, this allows the large connector to act as an adapter and would let a basic assembler and basic refinery to be added at the end. This could drastically speed up production as well.
Id like to do this in a large grid rover. Have two basic refineries and an assembler on board. Mine stone, smelt for iron, assemble into plates. Your limit would be power.
ive had to same idea but never really put it into practice but i do tend to build my bases inside the mountains normally go about 100-200 meters inside before making the base itself on one play thru the mountain was around 5kms wide so the base location was at about 2km-2.5km mark with another tunnel out to the other side
I had started out with a similar approach of building inside a mountain. The stone provides the ultimate protection but tunneling with a stationary drill configuration is daunting. The greatest ideas come from necessity such as saving time. Thank you for the share.
I think for survival, I would rather have a small aircraft fly between two points using the Right Click to destroy voxels, and then simply build out a self-replicating blueprint from the large grid base.
So this is tricky but measure twice cut once right? You could blueprint a tunnel segment “A” with an empty projector in it. The goal is to essentially stack up blueprints in projectors so that you eventually have a blueprint of a tunnel that as you mine and build along it builds projectors that automatically leapfrog the next blueprint forward without your interaction at all and then you can go through and just remove the projectors along the tunnel? Segment A projects segment B that projects A again and so on.
Couldn't the projectors be mounted on the driller so if your project tunnel spans a mile you wouldn't put one after another also can welder be added on top and bottom so there will be a whole tunnel from top to bottom instead of just side to side.
There is a problem with this build: it won't work in survival. If I remember right, steal plates can't go through 1x1 conveyor, so your welders won't work.
I've built many underground bases, from small to large, but usually do it with stationary drills and welders piped back to refineries and storage so I can process the stone. I've looked at using a rover but the main issue I have is that to go forward endlessly you need to right click mine, and you can't do that outside the cockpit. If you left click, where is all the stone going? Is that survival kit processing the stone and producing steel plates? That must be really slow. On the making projected guides issue, really long ones I just create in space. I have 500m of roadways and such, up to 1km of a straight line I use for lining up builds.
In my experience, a small grid rover has little choice but to store the stone and transfer it into a large grid system later for processing. It's unfortunate, but realistic. Ore processing is never done on site in a mine.
Once the drills themselves fill up with stone they just stop picking it up, unless they are conveyor connected to some kind of storage. Any additional stone is just lost.
@@Cee64E True, however mining rovers are only really effective if you use at least one medium cargo container or more storage space than that. If you're only using drills, you might as well mine by hand.
@@sorrowandsufferin924, That's true if you are MINING for materials. If you are just digging to get stuff out of your way, like for a tunnel, and you don't need the materials, you don't need storage. I dug a rather large hangar out of an asteroid using the PAM autominer script and dumped every bit of the stone overboard because I didn't need it.
@@Cee64E I am ALWAYS mining for materials. I always need every bit I can get, I am a hoarder that way. Stone still yields basic materials (iron, nickel, silicon). Even a basic refinery can yield a lot of material if you're mining out of a huge area of stone. Seems like a terrible waste to throw it all overboard.
Next time, have the projector in the tunnel wall be part of the blueprint. Step 2: have it project its own blueprint, then re-save the blueprint now that the projector is set up correctly. Step 3: Build the tunnel, and enjoy the self-projecting projector automatically extending the tunnel infinitely with zero effort.
Using an inch worm is much easier than this, though it isnt as bersitile and not always practicle. 1 major advantage an inch worm has is you can have your tunnel plummed and the worm can drop the stone into the system to have it delivered to a refinery or 2 so you can get more iron to make mor comps to build the tunnel. With your setup, you would need to dump your load off otherwise the stone will build up in the drills making them heavier. Since your drills are on subgrids, that can be very dangerous. It will upset the palance of your rig and can make it drill unevenly or clang out. If you have no need for the stone, you can bor it out instead. I know what you are thinking. "I dont want to have to hold RM\LT for that long". Well you are in luck. Because if you hold RM\LT and open a menue, you can release it and back out of the menue. The drills will still be going on full bor untill you hit RM\LT again or leave the cockpit. Now you can relax in your cockpit, drinl your Cosmic Coffee, and cuddle your plushie while your rig does all the work for you
To stack the wheels the rotor simply needs enough space for a wheel and then it may be a bit tricky but as long as the rotor is locked in position and set to zero it should allow additional wheels to be added. I typically add the additional wheels prior to lowering the driller to the ground and before I operate the rotors. Hope that helps.
The actual speed of the drills is slower, but for viewing purposes the video playback speed was increased. The machine was operating at approximately 1 meter per every 20 seconds on normal speed. So this is viewing the speed at 3 meters per every 20 seconds.
Thank you for the tip. After some tinkering I found that placing small pistons at the forward section and aft section with wheels definitely improved the control. The pistons were set to 0.6 extension with 3x3 wheel suspension set to maximum strength. The setup allowed for continuous drilling without having to adjust.
Good question, I attempted several ways to add a large projector to the small grid and although it can be done, the projection would not line up with the stationary large grid for me. However, it might not be impossible and I encourage you if you would like try it.
the easiest way on PC is the mod " drill and fill system" , you make the area of the block visible and you will adjusting it like you do to a projector , them the block uses ...humm... nanobots :?? to mine the are for you , you can make perfect shaped caves and holes and etc, the same mod allows you to "fill" holes and caves again , its really usefull but its SLOW
this is inefficient just make a small Jet that can hold a constant with a sensor and then press down or wichever way you want i mean make the sensor override your speed or a timer blocks constant speed setting... I know somebody have done it but I can't remember who it was it was somebody called wasted I think.
Too slow for my taste Sure it's automatic, but not nearly as effective as it can be I'd slap a rotor to add a large grid refinery and basic assembler so it can produce steel plate faster and solar panels instead of reactors
@@armastat good point, replace the rotor wheels with regular ones and that issue solves itself, also replaces the need for pistons to adjust drill height cause the suspension already does that

Making it a train works even better. You can go faster and don't have to worry about getting off center.

That sounds very possible, for power it may just require using mostly energy efficiency modules on the assembler and refinery.

The goal is to essentially stack up blueprints in projectors so that you eventually have a blueprint of a tunnel that as you mine and build along it builds projectors that automatically leapfrog the next blueprint forward without your interaction at all and then you can go through and just remove the projectors along the tunnel? Segment A projects segment B that projects A again and so on.

what if you mounted a large grid projector onto the small grill drill rover? print as you drive ?
Unfortunately, that possibility was tried but it will not connect the projections to the end of an existing build and allow welding.
Couldn't the projectors be mounted on the driller so if your project tunnel spans a mile you wouldn't put one after another also can welder be added on top and bottom so there will be a whole tunnel from top to bottom instead of just side to side.
There is a problem with this build: it won't work in survival. If I remember right, steal plates can't go through 1x1 conveyor, so your welders won't work.

I've built many underground bases, from small to large, but usually do it with stationary drills and welders piped back to refineries and storage so I can process the stone. I've looked at using a rover but the main issue I have is that to go forward endlessly you need to right click mine, and you can't do that outside the cockpit. If you left click, where is all the stone going? Is that survival kit processing the stone and producing steel plates? That must be really slow.
On the making projected guides issue, really long ones I just create in space. I have 500m of roadways and such, up to 1km of a straight line I use for lining up builds.
In my experience, a small grid rover has little choice but to store the stone and transfer it into a large grid system later for processing. It's unfortunate, but realistic. Ore processing is never done on site in a mine.
Once the drills themselves fill up with stone they just stop picking it up, unless they are conveyor connected to some kind of storage. Any additional stone is just lost.
@@Cee64E True, however mining rovers are only really effective if you use at least one medium cargo container or more storage space than that. If you're only using drills, you might as well mine by hand.
@@sorrowandsufferin924, That's true if you are MINING for materials. If you are just digging to get stuff out of your way, like for a tunnel, and you don't need the materials, you don't need storage. I dug a rather large hangar out of an asteroid using the PAM autominer script and dumped every bit of the stone overboard because I didn't need it.
@@Cee64E I am ALWAYS mining for materials. I always need every bit I can get, I am a hoarder that way. Stone still yields basic materials (iron, nickel, silicon). Even a basic refinery can yield a lot of material if you're mining out of a huge area of stone.
Seems like a terrible waste to throw it all overboard.

Next time, have the projector in the tunnel wall be part of the blueprint.
Step 2: have it project its own blueprint, then re-save the blueprint now that the projector is set up correctly.
Step 3: Build the tunnel, and enjoy the self-projecting projector automatically extending the tunnel infinitely with zero effort.
Great tip! The build is a lot more efficient with integrating a projector within the projection.
Using an inch worm is much easier than this, though it isnt as bersitile and not always practicle. 1 major advantage an inch worm has is you can have your tunnel plummed and the worm can drop the stone into the system to have it delivered to a refinery or 2 so you can get more iron to make mor comps to build the tunnel. With your setup, you would need to dump your load off otherwise the stone will build up in the drills making them heavier. Since your drills are on subgrids, that can be very dangerous. It will upset the palance of your rig and can make it drill unevenly or clang out.
If you have no need for the stone, you can bor it out instead. I know what you are thinking. "I dont want to have to hold RM\LT for that long". Well you are in luck. Because if you hold RM\LT and open a menue, you can release it and back out of the menue. The drills will still be going on full bor untill you hit RM\LT again or leave the cockpit. Now you can relax in your cockpit, drinl your Cosmic Coffee, and cuddle your plushie while your rig does all the work for you

To stack the wheels the rotor simply needs enough space for a wheel and then it may be a bit tricky but as long as the rotor is locked in position and set to zero it should allow additional wheels to be added. I typically add the additional wheels prior to lowering the driller to the ground and before I operate the rotors. Hope that helps.

what kind of mod or script is it that drills spin so fast??
The actual speed of the drills is slower, but for viewing purposes the video playback speed was increased. The machine was operating at approximately 1 meter per every 20 seconds on normal speed. So this is viewing the speed at 3 meters per every 20 seconds.

Thank you for the tip. After some tinkering I found that placing small pistons at the forward section and aft section with wheels definitely improved the control. The pistons were set to 0.6 extension with 3x3 wheel suspension set to maximum strength. The setup allowed for continuous drilling without having to adjust.
Don’t use the suspension ones use the ones without that way there no give when moving
that looks both interesting and boring at the same time.

Why not build the projector onto the rover?
Good question, I attempted several ways to add a large projector to the small grid and although it can be done, the projection would not line up with the stationary large grid for me. However, it might not be impossible and I encourage you if you would like try it.
the easiest way on PC is the mod " drill and fill system" , you make the area of the block visible and you will adjusting it like you do to a projector , them the block uses ...humm... nanobots :?? to mine the are for you , you can make perfect shaped caves and holes and etc, the same mod allows you to "fill" holes and caves again , its really usefull but its SLOW

this is inefficient just make a small Jet that can hold a constant with a sensor and then press down or wichever way you want i mean make the sensor override your speed or a timer blocks constant speed setting... I know somebody have done it but I can't remember who it was it was somebody called wasted I think.

I'd slap a rotor to add a large grid refinery and basic assembler so it can produce steel plate faster and solar panels instead of reactors

@@armastat good point, replace the rotor wheels with regular ones and that issue solves itself, also replaces the need for pistons to adjust drill height cause the suspension already does that
