It might be worth mentioning that as well as his 17 confirmed kills he also had a number of "possibles", and all without ever getting a single bullet hole in any of his aircraft. If you were a Luftwaffe or Reggia Aeronautica pilot, this lovely and modest man was your worst nightmare.
