Love this! Thank you! You talk slowly and your movements are slow so we can see what you're doing. Brilliant video!

I really want to try this, but I don't know how to start it or what the stitch on the sides is!

Loving this tutorial, you explain it beautifully. Can you tell me what the bobbins are as they look great to work with...

The tutorial was specifically for the background. This pattern is done at an angle, not straight down, as you'd do with a blanket stitch. She prepared the presentation by doing the first two rows, plus the right column (going down two rows) and the column just left of the right column down one row. She starts off doing the row where the in holes are placed in every position. In this case, the worker threads move to the left with each pin placed. When she advances to the next row, the pins are in every other position. This means that the worker thread does not travel. You work two pairs at a time, then the next two pairs. ... So this is how she demonstrates the background.
I imagine your issue is with the outside columns... For pin 1, where the first pin is in the right most column, twist (I believe), then half stitch with a twist., pin, then half stitch with a twist. Place the right pair to the side and pickup a pair to the left. We're at pin 2; half stitch with a twist, pin, then half stitch with a twist. Place the right pair to the side and pickup a pair to the left. Now were at pin 3. If there is a pin at position 3, then repeat the steps from position two. If there is no pin in position 3, then (also) move the second pair of bobbins to the right. (So, you'd have moved all four bobbins, of the previously worked, to the right.) Pick up a new set of four bobbins. Do: half stitch with a twist., pin, then half stitch with a twist.
In a nutshell, if there is a pin immediately to the left of your worked pin, you move 2 bobbins, if not, then move four bobbins. The "half stitch with a twist, pin, then half stitch with a twist" is always done with the resulting four bobbins. Watch the beginning of the video where she explains the two different rows. I hope this helps.
