I came across these downhill races earlier this year whilst looking for early MTB racing from the states. At seventy year of age I am well beyond taking these courses on, and at that altitude I doubt I could breathe. What is obvious right up front is that to do well in these races skill and fitness levels need to be really high what is even more obvious is that many competitors really dont have either of these attributes. They are little more than tourists, It is easy to see why they want to participate but maybe there aught to be a separate race for for the also rans. I note there are qualification races but their application to the start grid appears to be arbitrary.
You're never too old to give it a go! there was a dude in his 70's racing last year and this year I think. It's a very "bucket list" race for many MTBers (including myself), but unfortunately you do get a lot of squids and joeys turn up to race. They do separate the ability levels a little through the qualification race, but a lot still manage to slip through.
@@jackkingmanmtb2679 I remember going to the top of mont blanc back in 1968 I was reminded of just how steep that slope is the other day when watching the footage from the helicopter. as a young man I would have happily gone down it on a sledge but a bike ?????
It's a good laugh, it was pretty tough to ride on this year though because of how soft and slushy it was! There was a lot more snow this year than there was last year too.
The gopro was on the peak of my helmet. I can't help breathing heavily, thats just how I ride in those conditions, if you don't like it turn the volume down!
