  • Seminar Date: Tuesday 29th April 2014
    Venue: IMRO, Copyright House, Pembroke Row, Lower Baggot Street, Dublin 2.
    From writing hits for other artists to recording her own, twice Grammy-nominated Beth Nielsen Chapman, Nashville based singer-songwriter has truly embraced musical diversity. A breast cancer survivor, environmental activist, teacher of workshops and lecturer on the magic of creativity, she's penned numerous hits and written songs for many top artists including Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Bette Midler, Elton John, Neil Diamond, Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride, Michael McDonald, Amy Grant, Keb Mo', Roberta Flack, Waylon Jennings, Faith Hill, Willie Nelson, Bette Lavette, and many more. Her music has been heard on ER, Dawson's Creek, Providence, Felicity and in movie soundtracks, including "The Prince of Egypt", "Message In A Bottle", "The Rookie", "Where The Heart Is" and "Practical Magic". Mega-hit "This Kiss", ASCAP'S 1999 Song Of The Year, sung by Faith Hill garnered her a Grammy nomination. She was Nashville NAMMY'S 1999 Songwriter of the Year.
    A renowned writer of many hits for other artists as well as herself, Beth Nielsen Chapman is in demand as a songwriting teacher and creative coach, having taught at such schools as the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama, the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts and Berklee School of Music in Boston, and numerous festivals and venues internationally.
    Beth presents her unique and inspiring style of teaching in much the same way she approaches writing itself. For any writer in need of a boost of creative energy, this journey into the workings of the creative flow will cover some great tips and advice on how to step fully into your centre and find your voice, in writing and singing as well as keeping your balance in the performance of your songs.
    Play and even chaos can be fertile ground for inspiration and students learn some great tips on how to find a point of leaping off into the "good old unknown" as Chapman would put it. Teaching the dance of balancing between spontaneity and analysis, Beth puts a strong emphasis on the rewriting and editing process, so essential in developing a finished product from raw creative fodder to the best song possible. She addresses how to work with fear and blocks and how to protect and nurture your creative health in the midst of juggling the demands and disappointments of the music business.

    She's the best songwriting teacher I've seen online. I love her spirit and teaching method. I've been writing songs for thirty years and I feel like the eleven year old girl is already better than me. Of course, this was posted over eight years ago, so that little girl is probably a star by now.

    Starting from 08:43 the song is so hypnotic. It will be extremely good to convey "universal moral messages" such as; honesty, trust, courage, care, self control, and surely LOVE to all human. That song will be an everlasting song for humanity. The world needs that kind of song. Cheers from Indonesia.

    I really enjoyed her critiques, all of them! Now, what will these people do with them? Will they make it better or have they reached their greatest depth? I teach writing and I have to do the same thing that she does here again and again. Guide me in your writing, don't make me guess unless the whole thing is some personal secret! Then who would want to listen to it? Give me signals that reflect your thoughts and your process and, as a result, you can be a better writer or songwriter. Hooray! Beth Nielsen Chapman!

    I am sorry to make another comment. However, I am so reminded of Townes van Zandt when he talked about the songwriting process as "coming to him from out of the blue" and the he does not really write the songs himself! I feel much the same when I write a song as it seems to come out of nowhere! It is placing this as revelatory, in a divine context, that I am in disagreement with. Still, I love this workshop!

    Only one point I SLIGHTLY disagree with: in her first critique, around 47 mins in, she says, "...you can't change who you're talking to unless it's included in the lyric of a song...", I agree to a certain extent. But a song that breaks this rule and, IMHO, that is a classic AND a hit is "With Or Without You" by U2. I'm not sure if ANYONE other than BONO knows what that song is about but it is beloved nonetheless. All that said, I think she is spot on, totally helpful and inspirational! Sand and Water has been a favorite of mine since it came out.

    • @babyirene3188
      @babyirene3188 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      UA Love U@. But over the years Bono's lyrics have gotten crappier and crappier. WOWY is not loved for the lyrics, just the song's mood. The title is dumb and thoroughly unengaging.

    • @David-ig8of
      @David-ig8of ปีที่แล้ว

      Neil young seemed to make a habit with being quite vague with his lyrics..to me I find that if ya leave holes in the storyline, you leave places where the listener can plug themselves into the song...once they do that it becomes theirs and the listener is more attached and linked to that song forever..

      well, i guess they're good enough, kind of. but many of these artists would be nothing without the songwriters who's pitching songs to them. even when it comes to the superstars, many of them are not amazing singers at all, but they're right for the songs.

    Wait. Come on. Paul Simon didn't draw the lyric, "She wore diamonds in the souls of her shoes" from a deep place in his soul like it was living there all his life. I'm not sure how that reference fit because it seems to me the Paul Simon went to Africa to work with those rhythms and musicians there and he found that lyric there from the blood diamond mining issue that existed there and the lyric is very much a literal visual. I mean wasn't it? Wasn't it reference to diamonds sticking to the souls of their shoes as they were pretty much being enslaved for labor? Just seems like that wasn't a good reference for her point to me. Maybe the "the sounds of silence" or "like a bridge over troubled waters" would be a better reference in that sense. Don't we all know that Simon went to Africa searching for inspiration at a time when he was a bit stifled himself in his own writing? Maybe he wasn't like blocked IDK but I thought I've heard him say he was in search of something to inspire him by going to Africa. Just seems like a weird reference for her point there when he wrote that line from discovery there and it wasn't exactly something he was pulling from a deeper soul cache. Which is fine, we can write that way too right? As in observing something that we can use in a lyric.
