  • In this video we'll be looking at some failed card mechanics, in the form of some failed cards that never really saw competitive play. Starting off with Mother Spider. I swear future videos will talk about more than just 1 card.

      It had a lot of potential- Effect monsters that benefit from Nornal support that could have near-broken abilities due to the Gemini Summoning mechanic costing your Normal Summon. And then they got no good effects (except maybe Gigaplant). It would also have helped if threy were treated as Normal Monsters except when Gemini summoned so they could benefit from hand/deck Normal support.

Especially in today's climate where everyone is telling you you're fundamentally wrong every five seconds (clearly the best use of the internet), mob mentality is cool, cancel culture is a real thing and not just a meme for some reason, and social media exists (seriously the effect studies have shown social media to have on our mental health AND how addicting it is for most is scary (too bad the government is both too old and greedy to care and all the companies themselves care about is short term revenue)). And don't get me started about the persistent institutions that beat you down (school, capitalism, prison) which have yet to have seen any necessary reform (capitalism is pretty difficult to reform, but school and prison are feasible). Mental health is easily in the worst and most fragile state it's ever been in and only going to keep getting worse.

    @autobotstarscream765 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Spiders and Beetles felt like a failed attempt to reinvent Insects as Clown Control 2.0, 10 years of power creep too late.
    The modern design of Insects as Synchro spam would have been much more appropriate and probably successful, like how Inzektors being a powerful Xyz archetype in an Xyz era led to so much success for them and for the Insect-type they represent.

    • @Zakading
      @Zakading 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly, Insects still have "defense position matters" as their type's main gimmick. Digital Bugs have it, all "Spiders" have it, Cicada King uses it, Battlewasp use it to an extent, Krawlers are Flip (and thus Defense) focused.

    Oh, and as far as failed mechanics and cards, I know LV was technically an archetype, but it really felt more like a half baked mechanic. Geminis might be too much of a thing to go into, as well, and a small number did actually see play (Giga Plant, Il Blud, Neos Alius).
    How about minor Atk/Def gain and loss Spell and Traps? Like the old field spells (Sogen, Wasteland, etc), the old Type and Attribute equips (Power of Kaishin, Dragon Treasure, Steel Shell, etc), as well as the old cards like Castle Walls, Snake Fangs, etc?

AND I still used it! Won some games with it too! It really makes me mad that DD is in the Code for Duel Links, but not Available to own; Despite there being many decks that either Pop monsters or can bounce them in DL right now... I can't help but be reminded of Vanguard, and the insect Megacolony clan. Since the beginning of the game, their mechanic of resting your opponents monsters so they can't attack was by many seen as just weaker version of straight up destroying them, so they eventually started to give them effects that just messed up all your opponents resources and gave you lots of draws if your opponents monsters were rested. They really had to get some major buffs for any of the builds to be even semi-decent

    The way I would fix Mother Spider is by changing the effect to this: You can banish up to 2 other insect monster(s) in your GY (min 1): Tribute Defense Position monsters your opponent controls up to the amount banished by this effect; then Special Summon this card from your hand or GY. You can only activate the effect of "Mother Spider" once per turn.

    So, something to note about how youtube renders videos. If you have a very movement-heavy and detailed/line-heavy background, it makes it impossible for us with a slow connection speed to see anything but pixels. Please avoid the zoom-y or detail-heavy fast-moving backgrounds and it'll make this series a whole lot more watch-able for slow-internet-folks.

    Honestly I’d like to see more spider support. It was basically half baked when they introduced it originally, but with the power level of modern yugioh, a powered up version of the spiders could be really interesting.
    A lot of the flavor is monsters going in defense can be seen via them getting trapped in spider web, they could introduce mechanics that would negate defense position monsters or maybe outright prevent the monster from being used as material for ED summons. Maybe expand some of the effects to even affect set monsters and have spiders themselves unaffected by position changing affects to further emphasize the idea.
    Some of the monsters could work like Mother Spider, just not as restrictive i.e. only with insects in grave.
