  • Aha! Moments is an experimental show that is initiated in the HOPE and DREAM of serving a mirror for us to see ourselves in other’s STORIES by discussing and spreading IDEAS, HOPES and DREAMS.
    Guest: Ani Choeying Drolma
From the age of five, Ani Choying had to struggle to survive. Not a day went by without a beating from her father, without her fearing for her mother's life or her own. The day her father nearly stabbed her to death, she decided it was time to run away.
Ani Chöying escaped her violent home for a monastery in Nepal, where a Buddhist monk offered her sanctuary and understanding, teaching her to embrace life again. Cheeky and mischievous by nature, she rebelled against the rules of the community at first and delighted in flouting convention by learning kung fu.
One day, an American jazz guitarist heard the young nun sing and was so enthralled by her voice that he invited her to record an album with him. The royalty cheque was an unexpected windfall that enabled her to fulfil a long-cherished dream: to set up a school for young girls like herself, in a country where 80 per cent of women are illiterate. In 2000 Ani Chöying opened Arya Tara School, just outside Kathmandu. She went on to adopt a little girl, then two, and then another followed - until they became sixty.
Ani Choying now tours the world giving concerts, driven by her desire to help her young Nepalese charges.

Thank you so much for this enlightening interview. As a Tibetan female, I resonate heavily with what Anila has expressed in this interview. Especially what she said around at 12:25 to 13:00. Recently, a Tibetan male companion made an ignorant comment toward older, single women which was deeply rooted in prejudice and stigma that honestly shocked me and more so as this person is currently working towards a PhD. Therefore, it resonates when she says regardless of how educated one becomes, the age old patriarchal way of thinking is difficult to shake off - unless one consciously makes an effort to examine their thoughts/behavior and unlearn.

I know too well about how women in our community can be ostracised if you try and break norms. My own experience has completely put me off and I stay clear away from being involved now. Mind you, I founded NFP Tibetan charity in my teen years, raised awareness for community as well as undertook many initiatives for the community. Not to mention, it left me with no choice but to just give up and wash my hands off. It broke my spirit……yet I’m hopeful. Would I consider being nun? Perhaps 😂

This woman never calls herself Tibetan, she (zabarzasti) pretends herself to be a Nepali and tries hard to prove herself Nepali.
Every year she goes to celebrate Chinese New Year at the Chinese Embassy in Nepal.
All old Tibetans living in Kathmandu Boudha know that her parents were Khampa Tibetans.
Her Nepali language is way fluent than Tibetan.
