    I had just bought a new Hammond SK1-73 Stage Keyboard, wonderful instrument.

    I had the Overdrive set for the speakers I was using in my booth, which was technically outside. Prolly more than I would have used going direct into the camera, which is how this was shot. I didn't have any headphones. So the heavy drive here is just a dial spin away from being tamed. Thanks to all the folks who have said kind things about me and the SK1 here. To those who have griped-I ask that you reserve your judgement until you play this little beast live. Peace,..

    @henkehakansson2004 I've just purchased this hammond, and you'll be pleased to know this does happen with the expression pedal. It doesn't just 'turn up' the whole sound, when the pedal is up, there is not much overdrive, but as you push it down the overdrive increases, rather than it just being 'turned up' :)

    My Lord! This thing is amazing, if for nothing more than the B3 and Leslie!

    What I mean is: check out Korlas "Theme of the underwater worshippers". No Leslie or rotary cab, but listen to that whacky tribal drum impersonation. Done solely on ONE Hammond organ live/one take without overdubs.

    If I were an engineer I would say that it should include a midi input so one could add a second keyboard and maybe even one for a foot bass. That would be cool. I guess he did say that at the end there. Nice unit though. Seems pretty comprehensive and utilitarian. The Rhodes could be better.
    Did he say it has a tonewheel chamber in it? 4:25 Virtual tonewheels? What's a virtual tonewheel?

    When I used to sell Hammond organs and Leslie back in the 1980s, I had suggested that Hammond should had developed a keyboard like the SK1 series, as they had forgotten the pro's like me.

    Awesome instrument. For some grind--- use a guitar overdrive pedal. Nice presentation.

    @henkehakansson2004 Since the clones have digital tone generating systems they would probably benefit from at least SOME sort of analog component. The power amp overdrive of a good tube Leslie and the break up of a good vintage Jensen speaker has so much to do with a good Hammond tone. Since the SK1 is digital it needs something it can push that's going to round out those digits in a completely chaotic way. A digital amp modeler with a digital input will sound very digital.

    @Denvermorgan2000 It is TH-cam, and the MP3 quality audio tracks with the video diminishes the quality of the product :)

    @paulj0557 Actually I agree. Which guitar modeling software (for PCs or Mac) comes from Japan anyway? ;-) It seems like Italians has a monopoly of it right now. Some sort of analog or unlinear complex thing before it leaves the output stage would suit me fine.

    I have yet to hear ANY B3 clone that mimicks that certain KORLA PANDIT thump and chunk. On a real B3 with external Leslie cab (or else) you can use the left hand to do whacky drum sounds and thump sounds TOO, when called for. A major part of B3 smears that is. Check out any Korla Pandit tune on Spotify. Exotic and weird, but nevertheless a crucial part of that Hammond B3 sound.

  • @paulj0557tonehead
    @paulj0557tonehead 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @MrCcfly Tell me WHAT anyone paid $1,600 to tune? Certainly not a Hammond tone wheel organ, they don't need tuned ever! If you mean the Leslie needed tuned, then that is improper terminology, the fact that an amplifier has a bad Bb sound it's due to the unfiltered AC 60HZ signal from bad or failing filter capacitors- about $300 even from the shadiest of shops.
    I see in LA and NY every day there are plenty of deals. If one can't get a great Hammond Leslie combo for $1,800 they just aren't trying.

  • @henkehakansson2004
    @henkehakansson2004 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding the overdrive, I find it peculiar that no one looks at the amp modeling that's around, and implement tube dist to organ, with all its un-linearities and idiosyncrasies. Sag, dynamics, and all these buzzwords. I am very interested running ANY Hammond clone (such as this SK1) through and amp modeller such as Scuffham Amps S-gear, and a suitable IIR from Lesile simulator to go with that. I find that when overdrive on organ, the seem to stay with the simplest settings.

    @paulj0557 yea 200$ and 1k for transport (that weight a ton)
    then u need 1-2k for fix = too much

  • @henkehakansson2004
    @henkehakansson2004 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @jamez123123 Thank you. Then I know. Now, most doesn't do this properly, and is dependet of what kind of XP pedal you put into it. While they're at demoing this, they could've jsut as well show that, because that makes the differ from the competition. A real hammond B3 clone demo won't be complete without volume swells demonstration. How good a leslie sim is is impossible to judge on TH-cam.

    @paulj0557tonehead 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @antimarxism Okay, so the sounds ample good for gigging w/ clones, especially at the state of realness now, you've convinced me. Wouldn't you agree that the physical appearance of an organ on the stage will soon only be present at venues where bands can afford help to move a real organ, or feel like doing it themselves. Some might say an audience doesn't care if someone is playing a keyboard, but a real organ looks good too. Am contemplating making an assemble-able foam board B3:-)

    The best thing Hammond needs to do is to make again the b200 and the b300 organs

    • @patsaxon5284
      @patsaxon5284 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those two were great organs, but the B-300 I think was a Composer series organ with digital Auto-Vari.

  • @henkehakansson2004
    @henkehakansson2004 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why don't they test with a swell pedal? That's what'll make them break or make. When playing with a pedal, you should have clear sound at heel position. And when stepped fully down, the distortion should increase more so than the overall loudness and volume. Too bad no one really displays this. Even the Nord ones doesn't care for this. All clones should address that. It may be most or all clones Achilles heel. To make that WOOF scary sound. Still haven't heard one who does this.

    @antimarxism There are people who move stuff bigger than that for their work. Just get a system. Now that there is a plausible substitute no more organ on the stage right? Then again, I've played a great many gigs for a bar tab and I didn't even drink. Too bad for promotion of the organ's image, but I understand. I know what you might say to that. Hey I think that scoring great vintage organs for peanuts is the best kept secret in the music world. Keep on buying those keyboards;)

    @antimarxism These brands are expensive and meanwhile I see mint M100's and M3's for $100 or free here in Columbus Ohio- been a mint M111 for $100 for days and days now, yet people go buy a new Hamichord. It makes no sense. I'm probably going to invest in getting a HOAX Hammond built on an FPGA board. It sounds identical and the board is only +/- $400. Check out on TH-cam & go to sites mp3's. Awesome!
    Have lead on a free P.A. Stark upright box grand piano. You familiar w/? opinion

  • @paulj0557tonehead

    It sounds sickeningly quiet. How's it push a tube Leslie? Don't tell me people are weenies to the point of not even carrying a Leslie these days.
    Oh' come on, you know a good M100 sounds better than this SK1 and it only costs $150-$200 on Craigslist once every 2-3 weeks in anytown USA. Get some dollies...Organ Dolly that is, with what you save.
    So what is the next best thing to a Hammond console tone wheel organ? That hasn't changed, it's a Hammond SPINET tone wheel organ of course! I like R100

    Sounds like a cascio keyboard from walmart

    • @thomaspick4123

      Steven Piekarski The Hammond does have good quality sounds compared to the Casio. But, the Casio CDP-235R black has a pitch bend wheel and a sheet music stand. Plus rhythms, stand, bench for $450 at Costco. I bought the Casio. The Hammond without a sheet music stand, no pitch bend wheel, no rhythms for $2,000 = kiss my butt Suzuki!

    "Hammond" sound on this keyboard is a total fake! "Leslie" also sounds fake. Why brag about the 15 pounds? When doing a glissando, the keyboard slides off the stand. There is no substitute for he 400 pound authentic Hammond Organ.
