    Loved hearing your thoughts on it. Gave me a greater appreciation for the story.
    Knowing it has a second book feels like it will continue on. Nicole leaving her wedding dress (and the life she imagined before) and the family going back to claim the land that was stolen was the most powerful for me.

    This was a great book! I’m so glad that I picked it up because I got a really good look at reservation life. Justin Scott is a great bad guy. It was interesting watching his role in fracturing the community. Evan was fun to watch too. I had no idea that there’s going to be a second book. Very exciting! Great review, Kim.

      Yay! I know right! Second book! Woooohooo! And yes, Scott was a great character. And, seeing how he ended up at the end broke my heart. It didn't sit well with me. But yes Evan was also another character I enjoyed. He was such a great depiction of an Indigenous character learning their culture and traditional teachings. Im so glad u enjoyed it 😁😁😁

    The ending really hammered home the 'we survive' tradition of the band, referenced earlier in the novel.

      Yes, such a powerful ending but also leaving it open for the 2nd book. Im so excited. Plus, I also feel like it's almost closing with prayer and new beginnings. The renewal of new life 😊

      @@NativeLadyBookWarrior I'm left uncertain about what happened to Evan, I feel like I have to say it!! There's no way he survived several gunshots from a few feet away from a pro, right? And medical treatment was scant. But Nicole says they're going to see Daddy... aghhhh!!!

    This video was so helpful! I'm about to read Moon of the Turning Leaves and wanted a refresher on Moon of the Crusted Snow because I didn't remember what happened in the book too well! Now I'm even more excited to start the sequel :)

      @@NativeLadyBookWarrior yes, it was a perfect read for the season (even though it’s still in the 90s where I am 😅). I hope you get an ARC! I just finished Split Tooth, and now I’m starting The Inconvenient Indian by Thomas King!

      @@NativeLadyBookWarrior I’m only a couple chapters in but it’s great so far! King has a way of writing nonfiction that is so accessible, like he’s having a conversation with you. I hope you’re able to get your hands on a copy! 😁 And Split Tooth is like nothing I have ever read- a stunning and powerful book. I definitely recommend it!

    Great review! I recommend listening to the audiobook, narrated by Billy Merasty. I read this in 2018, but listened to the audiobook to re-read for a virtual book club discussion during lock down this spring. Moon of the Crusted Snow was our library's "Hamilton Reads" (Hamilton, Ontario) title for 2020; lots of book clubs, virtual author events, etc. I am looking forward to the sequel as well!

      Is he fluent in Annishnaabe? I was so curious to hear what the accent and dialect sounds like. When I was reading the book, I cant help but the see the characters speaking in a Hopi accent. I shouldn't do that but It is something that I am familiar with. Well Im familiar with the accents: Tewa, Navajo, Apache, and Piipassh. I have close friends that are Lakota that speak the language too and their accents are different also. But gonna be looking more into Merasty and reading the audio background. Thank you for that. :) I have an Indigenous reviewer friend also, and her parents speak fluent Annishnaabe so I will prolly be asking her if she listened to the audio book also. Sorry I'm typing a lot. Thank you for commenting and watching :D

    Oh yes!!! This makes me so happy to hear that a second book is coming out...I had no clue! And I just love watching your reviews :) I do need to get this book for my personal library...I read this from the library but want my own copy to reread especially before the second one comes out. And I love your rainbow bookshelves in the background!

      Yes! Another book, woooohooooo! And I am glad I also got the book, I was gonna get the ebook but I thought, nah! I'll get the book. Now I can await the next to line up next to it on my shelf.
      Thank you. My rainbow library is colorful right. But I will soon be taking some of those book from that rainbow to form another lovely powerful shelf by Indigenous authors 😁

    Great review Kim! My husband and I read this book last summer and he was sooooo upset at the ending, because he needs closure and answers with his books. I had no problem with the open ending. I saw a live IG video that the author (@waub) did, discussing that he was currently working on the sequel and did an little joyful squeal.

      Yay!! I was happy too to hear there was gonna be a sequel. An Indigenous bookstagrammer @neil_yazzie shared a story about Rice's new novel. The ending to me was good, but I was hoping it would cone with a sequel or novella 😁

    awesome review! I've read a couple of reviews by others and they didn't quite capture the level of awe I was feeling at the end of this book. the references to the shelves going empty made me queasy too. I felt strangely connected to Evan and the suspicion he felt at the visitors, and how he came to the conclusion about what Justin was doing. all in all, fantastic book- I'll definitely give it a re-read because I'm sure there's a lot I missed! oh, and I especially loved the foreshadowing from the story of Nanabush, perhaps there's a connection between that and the dreams? I look forward to the second book!!

    • @NativeLadyBookWarrior
      @NativeLadyBookWarrior  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thsnk u so much for commenting. I had the pleasure of talking and listening to the author recently. And Waubgeshig stated that the next book will take place 10 years I believe after the first one. So I believe it may focus more on Evan's kids. But this read is pretty incredible. There's so much cultural symbolism, even with the characters.

  • @MargaretPinard
    @MargaretPinard 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The dreams made such a big impression--I almost wished there had been more follow-up or a connection or a discussion of them at some point. :/

    • @NativeLadyBookWarrior
      @NativeLadyBookWarrior  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe the next book. It would be nice to have a cultural explanation or storytelling from the characters about it, right?

    • @MargaretPinard
      @MargaretPinard 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NativeLadyBookWarrior Well, that wasn't so much what I was looking for, but something plot-related, such as connecting that more than one of them was having foreboding dreams, and maybe Terry should have been told, which would have changed the timeline a bit...structure is my weakest visioning tool, though, so maybe that would've messed it up? :/
