CSKA qualified for the groups of the UEFA Conference League. In this video the path to the group stage is followed with highlights of all goals. The Armymen had to overcome three obstacles to qualify for the group stage. In the second preliminary round, CSKA won hard against Liepaja after 0:0 at home and the rematch, and won via penalties. Between the two matches, Lubo Penev was released and Stoycho Mladenov took over the team. Stoycho Stoilov was also sent off after a scandal with the fans. In the third preliminary round, CSKA faced old acquaintances from Osijek. After being removed in 2019, this year they also bowed their heads to the glorious army detachment. CSKA played a great match in Sofia and won 4: 2, and in the return match in Croatia the result was 1: 1. Osijek was considered a favorite before the clash, due to its higher budget and the cataclysms in CSKA. However, the military hinted at its enormous potential.
In the playoffs and a direct battle to enter the groups of the Conference League, CSKA was unseeded and drew Victoria Pilzen as an opponent. Viktoria Pilzen's team has been a regular participant in European tournaments for the last 5 years and therefore had one of the highest coefficients in the playoffs. After a heavy 2-0 loss in the Czech Republic, the armymen had to overturn the score at home. In one of the most memorable matches in recent years, CSKA managed to beat Viktoria 3-0 at home after extra time. CSKA had their forward Jordi Caicedo sent off in extra time, and Busato made good saves to keep the clean sheet. Thus, the more expensive team of Viktoria was eliminated, and CSKA is again in the group stage of a UEFA tournament. Basel was eliminated in a similar way last year in the UEFA Europa League.
In the groups, CSKA will face Roma, Zorya Luhansk and Bodo/Glimt. Last season CSKA also played against Roma, as in Rome the match ended 0:0, and at home CSKA won 3:1 in the last match of the group stage. Zorya Luhansk is also a well-known rival. In 2019, the Army men lost after controversial refereeing decisions in both matches against the Ukrainian team. In Sofia, a controversial penalty was awarded to Zorya, in Luhansk CSKA was denied a clear penalty, and in the counterattack a red card was given to a player of the Reds. Bodo/Glimt is the most unknown opponent to the red fans, but this club has won the championship in Norway for the 2020/2021 season.
