Very decent? That's gotta be one of the best webcam and mic combos I've ever seen in a notebook or tablet. I have to say that I love how ASUS has been, IMO, the best mobile device innovator for like ten years. Yes, ten years, one of their first consumer devices, as opposed to hardware parts, was the Transformer tablet, which I remember drooling over when it launched. Top-spec tablet for content consumption, netbook with extra battery and IO for productivity. Ten years ago! They have consistently pushed the boundaries, and seem to actually been offering support for the dedicated extrenal GPU stuff, which is great! All too often, these niche concepts are one generation affairs. Their X13 and Z13 lines have been amazing, the Duo does some black magic to fit ultra high wattage parts in a super thin chassis and has the whole dual screen thing, they put out a glass-free 3D OLED screen this year, their phones have the incredible trick of being able to flip the main shooter backwards and use it as a front-facing camera, it's crazy. And the most surprising part is how it tends to actually work. This is actually a somewhat compelling case for the RTX4000 focusing so hard on keeping RTX3000 performance, but at lower wattage. This is *shockingly* powerful, and the battery isn't even as bad as I feared with that big i9 there. I imagine a Ryzen CPU would hit 9~10 hours? I'm guessing this + the enclosure will cost about the same as a fully fledged RTX4090 laptop, if not more, but I actually don't mind that! This is a very niche product with an unique proposition, and honestly, there is a lot of logic to the concept. My brother is an artist and architect student that has to bike every day. Provided the touch-screen is good enough to do serious digital art, this is just about perfect for his needs- compact enough that it's easy to fit anywhere a standard-sized, "old school" paper notebook would go but more than powerful enough to do anything you'd want to do on the go. Hell, nearly 60 fps on Cyberpunk 1440p/Ultra is plenty of horsepower to do nearly anything you'd want even sitting down, nevermind the enclosure. Provided their touch-screen game is at least in the same ballpark, I think this is a very good option for the actual pro users of the newer iPad Pros. A top-spec one is 2400 USD! And the Z13 runs fully-fledged Windows instead of purposefully capped iOS. I could absolutely see a lot of civil engineers and other roles that need to, say, check detailed blueprints in a construction site pulling this out. This 4070 version, provided the markup for the special edition isn't truly ridiculous, actually makes more sense as something you'd buy without the dedicated external GPU, and wait until the next gen or two come around, unless you are doing some heavy rendering on it. ... RTX 4000 should all have 10~12 Gb of VRAM and a larger bus still, but I will die on that hill =P
@@NotebookcheckReviews On that note, will you review the upcoming Asus Ally? That's an incredibly clever usecase for the external GPU, and it looks like it's packing an absurdly impressive chip, a Zen 4 and RDNA3 APU.

13 people found this helpful
If you live in Germany or want to order the german model of the Flow Z13 be aware that the product page is misleading. But to get started why you shouldn't buy the Flow Z13 in Germany or to be precise the model numbers GZ301ZE-LD239W, GZ301ZE-LD002W, GZ301ZC-LD027W, GZ301ZC-LD133W and GZ301ZA-LD107W, I will explain what the problem is from how I found out about it. I was looking for a 2in1 Laptop or Tablet with Pen support and Windows. I saw the ShortCircuit on the Flow Z13 and liked it a lot, so 2 weeks ago I ordered one, the GZ301ZC-LD027W with an i7-12700H. It got delivered and everything looked fine from the outside till I tried to charge it. The Flow Z13 has 2 Type-C ports 1 Thunderbolt 4 (not sure if I should call it that) and a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port that is part of the XG Mobile Interface. Charging through the Thunderbolt 4 Port does not work at all, even though on the product page it says "Thunderbolt™ 4 support DisplayPort™ / power delivery". The USB 3.2 Port worked fine for charging but is a bit strange to use because it is covered up with a rubber grommet and if I am going to use that port for charging I will lose that right away. I contacted my vendor with that issue and that's how I found out that in the german models the Thunderbolt 4 Port doesn't allow power delievery. Even though it is listed explicitly and is part of the Thunderbolt 4 standard as well. After a couple of emails back and forth the vendor found a little footnote on the product site that says the port doesn't support power delivery. I would show it here but I can't find it anymore, because it is that well hidden on the site. The vender then contacted ASUS about it too find out why this is disabled in Germany and only got the answer that it is disabled on a hardware level and didn't give any information if it possibly could be enabled via BIOS or not. I then contacted the ASUS Support myself to see if I could get any more information and because I was pissed and wanted to see a poor support agent sweat. I got the same response and still no reason why it is disabled or why they keep their product page like that. That is the reason why you shouldn't buy those versions of the Flow Z13, I find it pretty insulting that they display the wrong specs on the product page and it is extremly inconvenient to use the USB 3.2 port for charging, because I don't want to lose the rubber grommet. Also practically being told: "Yeah we scammed you with our product discription but it's fine we have that somewhere in a footnote. And deal with it" is not the way a customer should be treated.
Charging on both USB-Cs is working for the new 2023 models. It was a Limitation of the 2022 models tho, that is correct!
Oh what the fork, this looks amazing! Finally we're getting to tablets with real performance. Now I want this, and it's probably not even available in my region.
True, but then again, hardly any announced AMD-based systems made it to market yet. So it might just be better to accept the Intel CPU and having a product you can actually buy.
It's not feasable to have both options for this sort of device, since it's a much more niche device for niche people. They were right in my opinion to put the Intel processor in this and the AMD processor in the X13, which is a much less niche device made for a broader audience. Plus, you can always carry a power bank with you to charge it with you if you don't mind that.
Can the keyboard cover be swapped with a non-ACRNM version? Like many others, I'm excited about just about everything ...EXCEPT struggling to recognize keys amidst all the invented symbols. Touch typing will be fine of course, but there's plenty of times in life we just need to reach across the desk to tap one key while busy with something else. I've pre-ordered mine and remain hopeful that I can get a normal keyboard cover.
Thats actually an excellent question. I might get the regular Z13 in soon, and then I can check! The cover in the thumbnail is my favourite in terms of looks, but its harder to recognize the keys, its easier on the other one. But you are right. A lot is going on, with those keycaps :D
I always wanted the zflow but I hated that the first one had a 3050ti at the time so I opted for a g14 w/ a 3060 ti, now I want this seeing as it has a 40 series card instead of a 3050ti especially if it's getting that type of performance and battery life for a gaming tablet but I already have a g14 and cant justify getting a gaming tablet too, hope they continue this line of products
Yea I bought a zephyrs g15 and I’m regretting my purchase. It’s just not convenient enough for travel. It mainly sits on my desk. This looks perfect. Wish I would have bought this instead…..

Tough, very tough. I liked the Flow X16 last year, and the legion Pro 7 was pretty impressive, and definitely this version of the Flow Z13. But there are so many great options out there right now!
I really like mine, I think the keyboard is a little crowded and compacted but you get use to. Also, I wish there were other keyboards and that it does not had to have the rest arms to hold it in 90 degree, when I used in my legs is a pain. Besides that is very oversized for my regular use.
I kinda hope they could make a clean version of it instead of that industrial look. Idk about you guys, but if they can make it look like a surface pro or an ipad. Good lord, I'd buy it.

The main thing about this is portability....however, BATTERY LIFE?? The battery life is atrocious. If this is going to be a usable mobile device, it needs battery life. You can use it at full tilt for about an hour. Light use will get you 5 hours. #WTAH?? Thisis the reason people are going out and getting a MacBook Air. It does not game like a PC It doesn't do many things like a PC It gets you into the walled garden, which is uncomfortable for anyone who likes to be free. However, you can take it to school or the office, forget to bring your power adaptor, and be fine all day. You can go to the coffee shop just with the laptop, be there for 6 hours, and know that you will be fine. You need to hunt done mains power outlets at Starbucks - pouncing on spaces as people pack up to go. Making people who are just making a change, and NOT actually leaving, feel uncomfortable, haha. You are not wondering if you can get away with using your computer for a few hours now or if you need those hours later in the day. You need to be sure about all the various sleep modes you need to use to get the last bit of juice out of your PC in an outlet-free environment. Battery anxiety is a real thing. Look, I know that you are most of the time just a slight inconvenience away from a power outlet in most cases and places. I get it. BUT You have to bring the charger - and I know you would you would probably bring it anyway. But the thing is the anxiety, not the lack of charging spots. They exist, and you will probably get one, but the anxiety of wondering about your battery is terrible. This PC should have better battery life. Don't get me wrong, this computer is fantastic. HOWEVER Its I sNOT is portable until its battery life is fixed. This is soooo infuriating. Almost perfect PC - portable - but lats for the shortest time possible. Why would a mobile creative choose this over a MacBook Air 15? or 13? With the MacBook, they could edit on the plane. With this, they could look like they could edit on the plane, but they wouldn't be able to edit on the plane. #Yikes!
Fantastic review…I really like this product so I have a quick question. Could you play games directly off a micro SD card like you can with the Steam Deck?? Thanks in advance. 👌
Even the "normal" Z13 has a metal stand. We reviewed it on the website: www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-ROG-Flow-Z13-in-review-Madness-RTX-4060-in-an-impressive-gaming-tablet.710800.0.html
so this (just found it from reddit) or a 32gb surface pro 9? amazon has this for $2500 currently, while i can get a SP9 32gb for $1800 before keyboard (so about $180 more for the keyboard) for a total of around $2100. ive got a few surface accessories already, like the 2 mice and the slim stylus that i would use rarely for my now dead x13 (2021, motherboard capacitors blew, and it wasnt cost effective to repair it). i mainly need it for traveling IT, and something lighter and less bulky than my scar strix 17
I might be a little biased, but the combo of portability, features and performance the Z13 offers is very tough to beat. That said, if you value portability the most and do not need the additional CPU and especially GPU performance, the Surface is a little more practical in that regard.
@@NotebookcheckReviews ive been looking at a number of videos on this beast. Ive seen it with 2 different keyboard type covers, the default on like here with all the colors everywhere and a "productivity" version that is much less eye catching. TBH if i can swap between the 2, this really gets rid of any gripes i may have about it. Im a tech nut, so im not bothered at all by the "rugged" design of it, especially loving the strap add on.
The 4070 performs quite well in Blender for example. Which 3D modelling software are you referring to? You will probably not find another tablet that can perform this well.
Thank you for this very informative and excellently made video. By chance, I also had the opportunity to pick up such a device and as a long-time Apple user, I am really surprised what kind of performance fits into such a case. The design of the case and the build quality also really amazed me. The fact that even games run so smoothly on the device is a pleasant surprise. However, you should carefully check and adjust all Windows 11 service settings, otherwise the fan will already run before you have even logged in.
Asus put together a unique device with more than enough performance for almost all (portable) use cases. Occasional fan noise upon booting up the Z13 is most likely due to Asus' tuning rather than some window settings issues.

Important question, Does it have a Sim card slot? LTE compatible or only used with WiFi? What if there's no WiFi connection available? As a digital nomad gadget that would be just carrying a piece of metal. Please if anyone knows the answer let me know.
For a 3D artist this looks very promising mainly with the portable aspect if one wants to keep moving places and still be able to work through. I'm pretty sure this 4090 gpu is not on par with Desktop but i hover around 4080 and 4070 desktop performance ? But this is a very cool products for a select group of people i think who needs portability and power.. I don't really mind the battery performance or anything high end with such small screen size except for color accuracy. Thanks for the review :) I hope to get hands on this device soon.
While I can see the appeal of this tablet, I'd be happy to live without the RTX 4070 and keep the Thunderbolt 4 port. At least I can use an eGPU with it. Also, since Alder Lake, I'm more than happy with just having Intel Core i5 CPU. Before Alder Lake, it makes sense to get i7 because of higher cache. But with i5 and i7 sharing almost identical specs between one another since Alder Lake, it's hard for me to go beyond i5.

thats the coolest fkn tech on the planet rn imo, the only way it could be outclcassed is if it freakin folded. Seriously, windows = most functional operating system + all in one w/ touchscreen input based device is the most efficient size for a computer as it gets therefore this is top hardware with the top software making it the most optimal tech in the world in my opinion. Obviously simular devices with simular specs join this, but I'm talking the basis of what exactly such a high powered tablet ranks in terms of overall value... insuch that as of this moment if I am time traveling this is what I'm bringing along, from a windows computer, I could recreate all these other inferior devices like cell phones... and therefore I would happily pay an arm and a leg if all I had were an arm and leg to invest (someone elses arm and leg in a freezer that is lol there is no better tech than the human body obviously it can create anything in the world)... 100% worth owning, the only downside is that tech just keeps evolving, top end spec'd computers usually have at least 5 yerars of use before they really start showing their age though.. mid rangers about 3 1/2 years, and cheap ones about 2 years.

I agree wholeheartedly. The Z13 is "fresh", and fun! Asus is really on a roll when it comes to releasing exciting ideas in a well-executed way!

Can you tell me what is that machine that connects between the tablet and your monitor? Is it necessary to have it?
It is an external GPU. You do not need it necessarily.
Damn after looking at your battery charts i feel that Asus missed great opportunity for having AMD option as well 😢
True, but then again, hardly any announced AMD-based systems made it to market yet.

The main thing about this is portability....however, BATTERY LIFE??

Light use will get you 5 hours.

Thisis the reason people are going out and getting a MacBook Air.
It does not game like a PC
It doesn't do many things like a PC
It gets you into the walled garden, which is uncomfortable for anyone who likes to be free.
I get it. BUT
You have to bring the charger - and I know you would you would probably bring it anyway.
But the thing is the anxiety, not the lack of charging spots.
They exist, and you will probably get one, but the anxiety of wondering about your battery is terrible.
This PC should have better battery life.
Don't get me wrong, this computer is fantastic.

so this (just found it from reddit) or a 32gb surface pro 9?
amazon has this for $2500 currently, while i can get a SP9 32gb for $1800 before keyboard (so about $180 more for the keyboard) for a total of around $2100. ive got a few surface accessories already, like the 2 mice and the slim stylus that i would use rarely for my now dead x13 (2021, motherboard capacitors blew, and it wasnt cost effective to repair it).
i mainly need it for traveling IT, and something lighter and less bulky than my scar strix 17
I might be a little biased, but the combo of portability, features and performance the Z13 offers is very tough to beat.
That said, if you value portability the most and do not need the additional CPU and especially GPU performance, the Surface is a little more practical in that regard.

Thanks Oliver. No, they are not removable!

Can you reproduce it? I still have the our sample here for a couple of days!
@@NotebookcheckReviews Yes! You need, while DC plugged in and GPU mode is set to Standard in Armoury Crate, choose NVidia GPU only in NVidia Control panel. Make sure that 165 hz is turned on Windows settings. Everything should be fine here. Then set GPU mode to Eco mode in Armoury Crate (only iGPU is used now), and, again make sure 165 hz is set. Give iGPU a little bit stress, maybe launch not very heavy game, than glitches start to appear. Usual pattern here that problems are caused by Intel Iris XE graphics in 165 hz after switching to it. In 60 hz no problems whatsoever
I was kinda surprised by the price. Thought it would be over $3000.

You must be rich; £3000 is a lot of money for most of us!
thats the coolest fkn tech on the planet rn imo, the only way it could be outclcassed is if it freakin folded.
