Milton Friedman Speaks: Is Capitalism Humane? (B1227) - Full Video

  • The question is irrelevant. Capitalism per se is not humane or inhumane; nor is socialism. If we compare the two in terms of results, it is clear that only capitalism fosters equality and works toward social justice. The one is based on the principle of voluntary cooperation and free exchange, the other on force of position and power. In a free economy, it is hard to do good-you either have to use your own hard-earned money to do it or work hard to persuade others to your course. But by the same token, it is difficult to do harm because by preventing a concentration of power, capitalism prevents people from committing sustained, serious harm. Is capitalism humane or inhumane? It is neither. But it tends to give free rein to the human values of human beings. Delivered at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Recorded at Cornell University © 1978 Lecture 45 min/Q&A 24 min.

Each time I lose faith in the system, in the little cogs that turn the wheel, I always look up this video. Dr Milton Friedman, you restore my belief in the system.
To the glory of the Republic!

How I wish I had the privilege to have been his student. It would have been such a great and valuable experience.

If Milton Friedman spoke at a College campus today, there wouldn’t even enough safe spaces to accommodate the opposition.

No they would just get him shut down, yell loudly in the theatre to prevent him talking, intimidate through violence. They dont even see how close to Nazis they have become.

"-Socialism will be practical when each man in Poland has a house and two servants.
    -Including the servants?
    -Yes."
    Brilliant!

I appreciate that the people with the questions behaved like adults. I find it interesting that the questions they ask are the same questions that are still being asked today. I wonder where those young question-askers are today.

Who needs to give in charity when government forcefully does this, taking a moral action and converting into theft and dependency with lots of waste.
When the poor aren't rioting and stealing, does that mean the poor are all okay and society has taken care of them, since when they act criminally, then it's considered society's fault. Who knew that the rich are sometimes criminals, the good are sometimes tyrants and the poor are mostly good people?
Why are politicians corrupted? Because that's where the money and power is. When government has less power over our lives, there is by definition less corruption. Fair taxation creates a sound economy and makes it clear what government is costing you. But once they can spend more than they tax, this criminal corruption grows by leaps and bounds.

The present exodus from Venezuela to Ecuador and Peru is a living example of failure of Socialism.

There's fault in both socialism and capitalism capitalism does change more into greed. Power of the big businesses don't really care about the small business the farmers for instance

    • @Derna1804
      @Derna1804 5 ปีที่แล้ว +29

Greed is fundamental to human nature, and any system you use will still have greedy people. Even the small businesses and farmers are greedy, but should we blame them for that? Because we can point to anyone we call greedy and they will tell us that they're just trying to make a good life for their families. The difference between capitalism and socialism is that in capitalism self-interest is negotiated, while in socialism it's enforced.

As soon as there is government involvement in business or industry, it is no longer capitalism. You can still own a pizza shop though.
