The last tractor bought for my families farm before it was sold was a new 3388. I used it many times including driving on public roads at age 12 without any accidents. It sure felt bigger than the 986 we had. We had an IH 5 bottom plow and bought the kit to add another bottom to made it a 6 bottom.
Great video as always, We farm with a IH 735 5-18 with auto reset bottoms and it ALWAYS does a good job (plowing and making drainage ditches after we get done plowing). It is good to see rare IH tractors STILL earning their keep working in the fields today, but every time I see the Super 70's series tractors from the BAD old days of the 1980's and I always say " What might have been" because (in my humble opinion) if IH could of held out a little longer things might have been different (there still be IH today)! But it didn't happen that way. And one more thing, Nice drone footage!!! ( Jake does a good job with it on his site too!)
Same here, as a kid I thought they were the neatest, looked cool without duals. I called them the "Daddy long nose", I suppose after the Daddy Long Legs spiders so common in my area. I wonder why they never tried a larger configuration. Being behind the articulation is untque, but i'm not sure it would be as quick turning as agile. I gotta think the wight distribution was key to the tractor. Anyway, I share your love of this interesting tractor, and way queiter than I though inside.
Later, Case tested Magnum with 2+2 design, and one of them still exists in one of Case IH facillity. Consumers were interested the new 2+2 tractor, but Case never put them into production. More about this is in book "Red 4WD tractors" by Lee Klancher.
Yes this was the MXU project. I have some pictures of an articulated 7140 and MX 270 in my archives. I also had a 1/64 2+2 MX270 made for my collection. It’s too bad the MXU never came to market. Interestingly the Super 70s used RABA axles like Steiger.
bigtractorpower Magnum MX 2+2 design? Sound great, i never heard about them. I think they abadoned the idea on Magnum 7100 2+2., Please, show some images, let the peopke know about this interesting concept. Ps- I hope my English isn't too bad... Geating from Poland. 😉
I know that this video was done a little while back but man that 2+2 IH tractor was an interesting looking and operating tractor. I wish I could see one in person. That's an example of what could have been if International Harvester had better finances and better farm economy back in the mid 1980s.
Once again, great information on the equipment. I look forward to you making these, I've really enjoyed them. I thought that video footage looked familiar. I'm glad Jake shared it with you for this purpose. Stay safe.
I remember those I was like 15 years old when that come out still a good tractor to the day technology in farming is mind-blowing thanks for the awesome video my friend
The guy who farmed across the fence from me operated one of those. We called it the ant eater for some reason. He would road the tractor out and back to Central SD from the north Central Iowa to work one farm. The tires were worn smooth from highway miles. Jerry died and so did Nell's and the grandson updated equipment when he took over. Semi truck replaced wagons ,. Larger tractors replaced several smaller ones. I don't know what happened to the ant eater
Love vid, a local farmer in district has small version of snoopy but I never been in snoopy it’s on bucket list. At $83000 that not bad horsepower for dollar.
The 4300 to the 7488 has allot of great 4wd history. I hope to get to film them all at some point. In the past year I have been able to film and feature a 3788, 4568 and 4786 on Big Tractor Power TH-cam.
Very cool stuff. I always liked the look of the 2+2s. There a few of the older ones in the area, a could on Craigslist, but you don't see them really often. Guys always said you loved them or hated them. I've never ran one, but I would love to get behind the wheel of one.
Yeah, one fellow said these were like marriages: If you had a good one, it was wonderful, but if you had a bad one, there was nothing you could do to fix it! (except get shed of it ;-))
20 years ago we were at a sale at a cotton gin at bishopville bishopville sc they sold one of those tractors for 20000,dallors we thought that was high that was not thing now to what they bring
Smart farmers (notill) vs stupid ones stuck in 1960.... as you go throughout the year the last crops stuff decay and become organic matter..... doing tillage reduces organic matter (a bad thing) and causes erosion and such....
The early models had some issues because many farms worked them hard like a big articulated 4wd. When in fact the 2+2 is an all wheel drive row crop tractor. This tractor was introduced before mechanical front wheel assist row crop tractors gained popularity. Today a Case IH Magnum or John Deere 8R is actually longer than a 2+2.
Look how the driver appears so relaxed in his job, here, Point and go! time to yap on phone etc - but then again it's a nice flat field and the tractor just walks it. Pity that most plowing we see in US APPEARS to be of poor quality! ie so much trash is left on the surface: a. to reduce erosion? or b. encourage carryover of trash -borne crop disease. That's why in UK we encourage COMPLETE inversion and burial of the trash. Was t his then autumn plowing in view of the condition of the chopped Corn stalks?
I have always liked the 2+2. I remember them lined up at my local IH dealer new. The white cab 88 series were big sellers, the red cab models only number in the hundreds. These Super series are only in the teens in production.
@@bigtractorpower what was the purpose for building a tractor in this configuration? I know its articulated but it looks like a very akward design to me.
It was a front forward design. In essence it is an early front wheel assist tractor. It had four wheel traction for row crop work and is tight turning. An MX MAgnum is as long as a 2+2. In 1979 when these cane out fwa tractors were rare.
Really that rare? Was this version less produced than the lower horsepower version of the same tractor? I know this was the high horsepower version. I guess I could look on tractor data. Always wanted one, but once front wheel assist came out, it wasn't needed I guess. And took up quite a bit of space in the shed, not to mention it had the same horsepower as some 2wd tractors.
Love those 2+2 tractors. I'm thinking if IH wasn't became part of Tenneco Group and Case IH how long those kind tractors were made then, maybe still today? Valtra has made (i'm not sure does it still made) X-series tractors. They look like normal Valtra tractor, but was articulated (and some of those, maybe all) have also front wheel steering. Those have smaller wheels on front and have only 90~150 hp and there was Forest-, City-and Agri-models. Like IH 2+2, but smaller and unequal size wheels and short nose. Spent many hours driving one of those, it was a great tractor.
Very cool. They are a neat tractor.
One of internationals finest tractors. My uncle had a 2+2 it was ahead of the times.
She's a real beaut. Nice clean lines and that definitive 80's look. Haven't seen one of these in years.

We got a 3388 as a trade in for a 1066. It was brand new and THE first one in the Willamette valley of Oregon.
Really like the info at the end. It was hectic time in the 80's

Good work with the specs on it. Info like that on rare tractors is hard to come by
Jake Ziegler great filming!!!

Interesting. I'll have to dig into that, I've never heard of them continuing to experiment with the 2+2s.
ih1206 write "Case Magnum 2+2" into Google 😉

I remember seeing these in the late 1970s in South Texas as a little kid. Yes the locals called them Snoopy!
The 2+2 was nicked named the Anteater and a Snoppy. They sure stand out.
Awesome Video. I enjoy all of them. Thanks for filming
That 7288 should be in a museum
It’s always neat to see a rare classic in the field.
I love the information on some of these tractors very interesting
A face only a mother could love, anyone else call them Ant Eaters? lol
Great video by the way, love your channel!
Thank you for watching
I spent many hours in a 2+2 after classes at WIU in Macomb. Good memories from the early 2000s
Very cool. The 2+2 is one of my favorite tractors.
I also am a WIU grad. Harvard of the midwest haha
1985 was a grim year for IHC fans ,the Case buzzard came in for the pickings .
It was a tough year. IH and AC went away in a mater of months.
I remember those I was like 15 years old when that come out still a good tractor to the day technology in farming is mind-blowing thanks for the awesome video my friend
I like the drone shots
Beautifull international!!👍👍👍
nice video love your videos watched quite a few of them thank you very much
I’ve always liked the look of the international 2+2 tractors
I hope to find more to film.
Very nice looking tractor and plow. Good video as always. Really enjoy the specs.
Thank you for watching. The 7288 is a rare and neat tractor to see.
Top notch vid Mike. I'd drive that for him for a day for free.

The ant eater name cane from the long nose up front where the engine is. In England they call the 2+2 a Snoopy.
Great video. I didn’t like them when they first came out. But i do now wish I had one

I hope to find more to film this year.
Very interesting video and a very beautiful tractor.
Nice tractor & the corp info Tenneco merger Case/IH Thanks Again
Glad you enjoyed it. I may do some merger history videos.
Nice video 👍🏻👍🏻
It's just awesome
One of the 19 is here in Southampton county at Mumfords farm!! I think its for parts though
I have seen one up close. Their is 2 in Ontario Canada
I see you found a 2+2.
Would have loved to see it's turning radius.
I hope to find 2+2s to film this year to get all of the angles.
Peter Hunsader I have a 3588 2+2, and it still amazes me how sharp it turns when turning on the headlands
Thanks! I'd love to see it.
We would probably have bought and still have a 7488 if they'd have made them. Damn shame!
It is a shame they never made it to market. I have a friend whose dad had a 7488 on order but they never got it.

20,000 would be a good buy. They bring $60,000 or more now.
What was the purpose of this design as opposed to other four wheel drive units already in existence such as Steiger, versatile, Etc?
This tractor was more like a MFWD tractor today than a 4wd. It is a front forward engine design with four wheel traction.
Machi74005 it was designed as a row crop tractor that positioned the operator back where the implement was
You had a 2+2 and it had 3 point, and dual speed PTO and better manueverability
It was also built of two rear ends so the front axle is actually a rear end, or?
Good video. Why do some farms plow everything and some do no till? How do you keep planting without turning over the soil from time to time? Thanks
Smart farmers (notill) vs stupid ones stuck in 1960.... as you go throughout the year the last crops stuff decay and become organic matter..... doing tillage reduces organic matter (a bad thing) and causes erosion and such....
you should have gotten video of it turning around
Can someone tell me why this style of articulated tractor didn’t catch on? I would have thought the cab over rear axle would make more sense.
@@bigtractorpower I wondered why this style didn’t become more of the norm. Makes sense if it’s more of a row crop machine. Thanks for the reply!

It would have been great to see where IH could have taken the 2+2 design. Case IH did experiment with this design on the Magnum 7140.
Reckon you could do a face reveal to us? Thanks.
You can see me in an interview on the Toy Tractor Times channel @ m.th-cam.com/video/2sXylLsuCXY/w-d-xo.html
