Overall I think it's an awesome idea though. I probably won't be participating this time because while I never watched the anime, I actually read the original first novel. It was alright. Not great by any means, but not nearly as bad as most made it out to be. As far as I was concerned it felt like pretty much any other YA book, but that also means I'm not interested enough to actually sit down and read the "improved" version. XD But still, it's a great idea. owo Honestly, anything that incetivises people to read more; manga, light novels or otherwise is awesome. o 3 o

That explanation about AIs basically means that Yui has been retconned as an unfeeling robot that only does things because she's programmed to. Yay.

Depends on which AI definition you are looking at. I do not think even mother's basement caught that one. Kirito and Asuna is following the definition of AI from Turing test, which basically said if it felt like a human, then AI is human.
However both Administrator and Kikuoka is following another definition called the Chinese room paradox, which essentially stated no mater how like human AI is, it is just a combination of even more complex programs.
so basically she is Abridged YUI
The idea of AI being sentient in different ways is really interesting. A world where there is AI gate keeping to different types of sentientce.
he simplfied it a little.. a top down ai in this case represents more a AI that was programmed but Developes on its own but only AFTER it experienced something for the first time(and acodring to its programming).. the LN basicly describes it that yui sometimes "Freezes" for a second at new stimuli before she responds to it for the first time.. which is the process at which she evolves.. a bottom up ai in this case represents an AI that reacts natuarly and DIRECTLY to any kind of stimuli regardles of prior experience...
basicly Yui does infact "Feel" if you want to call it that emotions(she technicly emulates them whihc you could call unfeeling but thast realy up to interpreation), but she cant react to new stimuli instantatniosly or naturaly on the first encounter....
so the more yui Intereacts with humans the more human she becomes through adapating and pattern recognizion.
Alice(and all of underworld technicly) on the other hand not only feel emotions(as in actualy feel and dosnt emulate)and reacts to new stimuli without needing to learn a new pattern first

The weirdest thing about that rape scene is there is already a perfectly valid loophole for Eugene to break his code: Seeing someone being taken for away for breaking the taboo index. It would parallel his inaction when Alice was taken nicely showing how he’s grown from that powerless little kid, and wouldn’t break the world building. Heck if you REALLY wanted to add a sexual assault scene, just have the bully forcefully kiss the girl and the system can’t separate the victim and the perpetrator and is going to take both away. It’s not too traumatic, actually comments on how rape or sexual assault victims are often labeled as “being at fault themselves” and how fucked up that is, and doesn’t break the rules of the world.

I feel like you forgot the rule that they said in the anime. The girls were receiving punishment from their nobles for offending them, which in the taboo index was perfectly valid. So from a victim perpetrator context there was no loophole for Eugio to exploit. The girls were not deemed as victims.

Death by flaming clown humping has to be the single most debilitating blow to a villain’s reputation in the history of animation.
It's awesome that Reki apologized to the voice actresses on Twitter instead of, like, asking the anime writers to cut that scene, or to rewrite it to something else.
Dont change source material because of dumb reasons like this. The scene is the way it is because it has to be. Please, go ahead and rewrite the scene and lets see if it still has the impact it needs, I'm 99% sure you wont be able to.

@@somerandomguyfromthebeyond1821 To be fair, they were actually the stuff of nightmares in the online media but only that. The first movie made good use of the Rahkshi as a scary entity while they were flashing face slugs in machine armor but this only functioned in the movie as the sets didn't flash from the face while the bohrok were only scary as insects in video with the tagline "you wake one you wake them all" in their insect nest-like setting in story.
They have limited intimidating factors to work with since they have overplayed their fear factor in the movie because they built up the figures as opposed to just sculpting them as they were in the set.
Gadunka can be pretty scary... until you realize his name. Who named him Gadunka? Or the movie Rahkshi. Or Kardas. Or even those glimpses of the Baterra. Those even sound pretty scary when you think about it.

@@redxhand roughly the same timeframe. Alicization was written in 2005, FSN released in 2004. In all likelihood, Knight Alice is more based on Agrias Oaks. It even fits with her initial Web Novel design (braids, bulky arm braces and the rounded armour).

The rape scene is pretty awful, the one nugget I like from the whole interaction is Tiese wiping Eugeo’s eye-blood. To me it feels like a wordlessly powerful interaction between two broken people, as opposed to the “hooray we’re together now” ending of SAO alfheim
I'm commenting a year later, but as a survivor of SA, had someone even tried to help me, I would have felt forever protective of them and done whatever in my power to pay back their kindness. IMHO the worst part of SA is how lonely it is to recover from it; not a lot of people recognize the signs or even if they do, they rarely reach out

The show has its bad moments but this scene in particular failed to deliver what in the light novel was a traumatic turmoil to Eugeo's character. The light novel exposes more of his inner thoughts, the overwhelming guilt he carries over not being able to save Alice, leaving his village to find Alice which displeases his family who's poor, and that all the while feeling like he will never be loved. The love he sought in that scene wasn't sexual love (tho administrator clearly tried to lure him w that one) but is unconditional love. he never got that in the end and i will always cry about it.

I think what enrages me most about the sexual assault stuff is how it's ALWAYS used so that a man can be virtuous and save women from assault...That's it. Women and their trauma are used as props. And I have to say, fantasizing about an innocent woman being sexually abused so that you (or your self-insert protagonist) can save her has to be one of the most disgusting hero fantasies to have.

@@asshat8892 I'm pretty sure when I wrote this, I meant every time it's used in SAO. Though I do hate the trope in general, too... I've been watching a lot of reviews of shitty romance novels (I love a good roast lol), and a lot of them love to do that.
You try that shit with Yoko Littner and neither Kamina nor Kittan will have the chance to give you the Suletta Slap.
There’s a lot to unpack here. First off I think you’re not as harsh as you should be in some ways because it’s pretty clear the writer of SAO has some sort of sibling sexual fantasy, given Kirito and his sister in Elfheim. Which together paints a pretty bad picture with what pointed out. But also on the other hand I think you’re missing the part of it that it’s about them being saved. SAO and Isekai in general are about overcoming all problems in life with ease as an escapist fantasy. Sexual assult is just about the worst thing that can happen to a woman, and being saved from it would be a dream. It’s not like the story paints it as good in anyway, in this season the people doing it had the most brutal injuries given to them compared to anyone in all of SAO. And if you want media that shows the effects and struggles of sexual assult then you’d have to look more towards western media because of culturak differences, but there are still some anime that show it. Beserk is probably the best example where it shows all aspects of it. The trauma and memory blocking afterward, the mix of emotions during, the mindset that leads someone to commit the horrible act, and the injustice that follows

Sorta? Although Matts thing with FNAF is that it never ends and gets more and more complex. Its story is hidden and hard the piece together. The complaint about SAO is that its pretty much the opposite. Its has no complexity and the story takes no effort to understand.

It is actually not. First Saber’s main color is blue while Alice is gold as described in LN, second when Alice 30 first met Eugeo she was actually wearing a white armor, anime changed it so it looks more like little Alice.
Last, LN part of this first published online in 2005, 1 year before FSN anime and just 1 year after the release of the game.
The idea of AIs organically discovering how to manipulate their own universe using its existing code while also accepting that as just another part of the natural laws of their world is honestly really interesting. (I guess this is what algorithms and machine learning basically are already, minus "sentience" in the way we understand that word). There are some genuinely good ideas going on in SAO, it's just a shame the execution is so clumsy and half-baked.

Yeah, having watched the war of the underworld, this is 100% accurate, and honestly it's like one of the bigger problems with the whole arc tbh...
Also a random tangent, but honestly my biggest problem with the sexual assault scenes in SAO is that the director clearly doesn't care about trying to mitigate how bad they are, they're not only gross and unnecessary, but the way they've been animated has only made them worse because they are also being used for fan service. I could conceivably see a younger Reki Kawahara trying to write those scenes to be shocking and powerful, instead of being cheap and exploitative, but the anime adaptation manages to only highlight how gross and unnecessary they really are.
What I'm about to say doesn't feel like it should be a hot take but considering there are SAO fans who actively defend those scenes, I'm gonna call it a hot take anyway, but considering that not even Reki Kawahara likes the fact that he wrote those scenes, and considering the backlash the series has gotten over the years for the unnecessary use of sexual assault, in my eyes it would have been more than acceptable if the people behind the adaptation of Alicization tried to remove the sexual assault scene entirely and rewrite that part to be less lazy and exploitative. Instead in typical SAO fashion they decided not only to keep that scene in but to make it as graphic and overly-sexualised as possible.

Geoff already stated the scene in this part of the story serving to make a male character progress in his arc, the Leafa scene does the same thing again for a character who literally does NOT matter afterwards

Fanatio was sent to Cardinal's library to recover, Deusolbert was left alone after he realized his memories were a lie, Dakira didn't die in Alicization Rising, they didn't even fight Linel and Fizel, they didn't get a rematch against Eldrie and I shouldn't have to explain Alice and Eugeo.

If the wiki is accurate, Bercouli winds up getting released by Alice in the next volume, the one after the anime leaves off but Deusolbert is apparently never seen again though his death isn't confirmed.

Can’t stress that enough anytime someone mentions it. No attempt in the entire franchise is ever successful. And when I say successful, I mean as soon as the act itself actually begins.
Once penetration occurs, it stops becoming an attempt and becomes an execution, and then successful once it’s complete.
Not only does no one successfully complete, they never successfully execute, either. No victim is ever penetrated. Hell, no one committing the act even gets their dangler out.
Even the mere thought of trying to do something like this is horrible. But a success is still much more excruciating to my heart than an attempt. I become anxious when I vaguely talk about attempts, and I get severe headaches when I hear about a success. Even just imagining a misconception of the act being executed (again, the step past an attempt before completion marking success) starts to cause pain by my right temple.
So just solely out of emotional distress regarding the differences between an attempt, an execution, and a full success, is what drives me to correct people whenever they mention this. I’m sorry, that’s just what happens in my head and my heart.
See this is why the anime failed so much. In the light novel the author really hit his grove for this Arc (then promptly just goes bonkers with the underworld war). There was great character build up, very solid story and build up to the evil actions certain characters did. So the attempted rape scene in the book actually makes sense because we saw the build up happening, we saw kirito and Eugeo caring and training their students and also how the two assholes from noble family’s had been being assholes right from the beginning and just upping the antics more and more after each time shit doesn’t exactly go there way and these commoners are surpassing them. It still came across a bit to much like a fridge scene aka these girls just being motivators for the heroes to be well heroes. But omg did this anime just make it so so so much worse by literally fastwording through what in my mind should have been the best SAO series around and potentially one of the best anime’s around. Like hell if they actual followed the novels proper we wouldn’t be getting the underworld war arc right now, we would maybe just be reaching the final battles to Aliciation. There was so much story there to be written and built up. Butttt they throw it all out and it just comes out being stock standard SAO complete with the almost rape scene.
@@TheKnight212 They may be following a similar pattern of omission as the first two seasons. Granted, Progressive 1 was released in the same month (give or take a month) as when the anime premiered, but we should have had a Progressive anime by now. By this point, I could gather that each Progressive novel has at least 3-4 episodes' worth of anime content in it on average. We could get five seasons of Progressive and still be nowhere close to the end of Aincrad.
But to your point, there really isn't a reason for them to skip anything. It's a show, not a movie, they don't need to fit within a runtime space. However, call me crazy, but I think that an adaptation of Progressive will lead to the anime doing an entire lap on itself. A Progressive anime won't be just the Progressive novels, but rather a full remastering based on Progressive's reboots/retcons. So when it gets back around to Alicization again, we'll get full coverage that time.

Listening to you and other people dunk on basically every part of SAO has really made me realize just how much I had to turn the brain off to enjoy the anime as much as I did. I am grateful for the criticism that made me realize how bad the writing and (most) ideas of SAO really are but at the same time I have to somehow reconcile the love I had for it. It was the first anime I watched so long ago and I actually really liked season 1 (I mean it when I said I REALLY had to turn the brain off, I mean I don't even know how I tolerated Alfheim and all its bullshit) and Mother's Rosario. I think I still somehow like Kirito and Asuna and am hoping for something reasonable and meaningful that I can cling onto in Progressive, but it's been eye opening to find out just how much nonsense and power-of-friendship/love bullshit is pumped into almost all plots and side plots of SAO. Not to even mention how Reki seemed unable to leave uncomfortable or inappropriate scenes out of the story (if you are reading this now and watched the rest of Alicization, you'll know that this somehow gets EVEN WORSE in the second part. Like Jesus Christ that scene with Leafa actually made me wanna vomit). Well that's it for my rant. Yay for my character development in knowing bad writing when I see it and here's hoping for better from Reki from now on because I do want to see SAO become something better than it is.
