    hi there. could anyone tell me what are the materials used in the waistband? the black shimmery thing...

      Rosaiviti Solomona Traditionally its a coil made from scented wood thats first boiled in a mixture of oils and flowers which is then charred until black and made into rings. It has a texture between charcoal and chalk but gives off a very pleasant floral scent whenever the dancer shakes her hips. The one she is wearing however looks to be another case of Kiribati ingenuity and looks to be a very thick black plastic cable. I’ve seen some dancers use telephone cables pressed together to imitate the authentic ringed appearance.

      thank you so very much for that. This has definitely peeked my interest even more.

      The dark band around her waist is made from coconut shell. The shell is chipped into a round shape, hole is made in the middle of the shell, then a string made from coconut fibre from coconut husk is run through the hole. May take more than a hundred of the chipped shells to use depending on size of the dancer. Sometimes, as mentioned above thick black plastic cables are used as they look similar plus it doesn't take time to make.

    Can somebody tell me why on all these Kiribati dances, the dancers get harassed (in fun), and spray with what looks like perfume and also have money stuffed into their clothing?

    • @bravotabb3534
      @bravotabb3534 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a Kiribati way of complimenting the dancer. It used to be flower (uen te uri) scented coconut oil but nowadays it is perfume and cash. In the old days it would be done prior to dancing when a warm up song (te kamanene) was sung and the dancer would just stand there to be complimented. In the old days different islands have different taboos (tabu roroko) on how you compliment the dancer before she even dance.! The southern islands are more formal and highly restrictive. This girl is from the central island known as Abemama so a male putting money in her waist is no big deal to them! In the southern islands, as a male, you would never do that even these days. I know because I am from the southern islands. You probably watched a lot of Kiribati dance performed by those from New Zealand. Believe me, their compliments to the dancers are very ‘modern’!🫣🥺🧐 The same may also be said about those on South Tarawa as it is so urbanised, but I think to a lesser degree.

      @@bravotabb3534 it’s not only a Kiribati way but almost all the Micronesian Islands do this aswell and I’m if I’m not mistaken Tuvalu too. My family from Pohnpei does this too all the way to the flower in the coconut oil (which now has been replaced with Lotion in the mainland)

    • @bravotabb3534
      @bravotabb3534 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@santospaul8103 I noticed that may be the case but I have to let them say so about their culture as that to me is the appropriate way.
