I'm from UK, had a week in Manilla 2005, what a great place . Didn't have any epic flights but did have an epic save from a field out front. Other guys said I'd of had a long hot walk out from there. 😮 40 deg day. 😢
Yeah - wedgetails... A few decades back (early '90s) was in a hang glider comp (Bogong Cup) at Mt Beauty in Victoria. Flying off Emu 1 IIRC. On the home leg two wedgetails attacked whilst on the ridge to the amusement of spectators at the finish line. They took turns divebombing the hang glider, putting several tears in the mylar pocket on the leading edge. Nothing threatening airworthiness - just needed some ripstop to keep flying the comp. Won the Wedgetail Pluckers trophy for that little incident. The trophy still resides in my garage.
Cool video Ben Nice to see Oz from a paraglider. Scary eagle attack and looks like the wing will need more than tape unfortunately. Thanks for sharing Cheers Gerry 👍👍
I worked with a guy who had a wedgetail dive at some roadkill in WA and hit the windshield of their landcruiser smashing it and getting stuck half through the windshield and half out. It was clawing at them with it's talons and doing everything it could to get out at the same time whether that was to the inside of the cab or back out. Sadly, the impact with the car doing 100km/h caused it to eventually die.

Great edit Ben sone cracking flying shots you little clickbater you!!!!. 😂😂. Sure will make our buzzards look tane and small I bet. gutted for your wing though, and for sooiling the rest of your flying time out there, I'm sure you'll be back for another bite at the cherry. Catch you in the air soon buddy.
Recording yourself driving in Australia is an interesting move; the fines for using a mobile device whilst driving are no joke. There are plenty of automated cameras looking for it too. We get lots of birds attacking our RC planes and gliders, but nothing as big as a wedgie here in Sydney. Manilla is a nice place, I have family there and the gliding is a big drawcard for the area. Hope it works out better for you next time.
With 4+ hour flights, my battery runs out after the first hour so I have to reach over and turn it off and on. I was gutted I missed the attack although I was focussed on evasive action! Since this flight, I bought the Insta360 remote which I can use to quickly turn the camera on from a button on my riser for the next exciting moment!
It's a pretty small hole. Paragliders don't fall or deflate with the holes small like this. The tension is distributed over the canopy fabric and it is not that big to rip further. So, basically, the pilot continued as [almost] normal. There even wasn't any spin. Remember the airplane dogfight movies when they basically continue flying with pretty much damage to the wings? Same here.
I know some do, in this case I flew half way round the world so it would be tough to have another wing in the bag! Local pilots offered me a wing to use which was so awesome. When I'm more close to home I have a secondary wing I can grab :)
I'm getting better at this, the volt is so fast with bar and rear riser controls. I found them suprisingly heavier than expected to use but effective. Also managing moving from bar and handles to breaks smoothly when entering the climb is something I'm working on during this trip. Enter a big climb and wing pitches back, keep bar on and catch with rear riser controls, then release bar coming off risers at the same time and finally onto break to turn into the climb. Very satisfying when done right!
Hey Ben, nice to meet you in Manilla. I'm sorry that Wedgie put an end to your flying here. Last year, my month old Scala was ripped by a wedgie that lives just to the south of the West launch (tower wedgie). Your subscribers seem to be disappointed there's no video of the carnage. Perhaps this video of one attacking my wing will satisfy their bloodlust :D th-cam.com/video/QeNP2IQwULs/w-d-xo.html
Ah yes sorry! It was a really interesting spot I enjoyed seeing the history of the rails. Particularly the railway workers who would live with their family in a tent by the side of the rails, and move up and down the line by hand cart to monitor and repair the rails. What a life!

Wow - what a story! Lots to learn from the experience 👍 Looking forward to your next adventure already. Thanks

@@GerrysDiy yes it’s off for repair this week.
Awesome flying with you mate. Hope to see you somewhere in the world again
100% awesome flying together.

Great video mate. Shocking wing damage. Presume you’ve already sent it to Aerofix or The Loft.

It worked, this was one of my most viral videos for sure, next time I'll make sure to have the camera on ;)
Good afternoon, friend! Can you send me a couple of links to TH-cam channels of Australian pilots? Very interesting! 😊

Good to know! We had some RC glider pilots in Manilla, really interesting to see the models, I'd love to give it a go.
but my camera was off but i used it as a headline anyway, oh yeah, it was always on overwise.

They don't like drones in their airspace either. Magnificent birds though.
Can I ask what app is this for flight recording and replay?

could you explain why it scientifically stays afloat with the hole in the chute and what kept it from ripping further?

I know not everyone can afford it, but I often travel with two wings on my paragliding trips. This is one reason for it 😅!

Clickbait... still a nice video, but what's the point of saying "eagle attack" on your title if your camera stopped at that crucial moment lol?
😄
I completely agree with you! I always use thumb down hoping of minimizing these clickbait sellers

Try using your handles (back risers) on the straights: better glide and you can still control pitch

Masters of the Sky -,Wedgetail Eagles. They control air space in inland Australia.
100%, birds to be respected
