  • A review of these great sounding large bookshelf speakers from the 70's
    Very Neutral sounding, some might say laid back, but with a punchy
    Amplifier or Receiver these sound great.
    These are the best budget vintage speakers I have bought on the channel so far.

      I have not forgot about the sandwiches, they are on my list. Hopefully find some local. Its quite a bit of pot luck finding some low start listings and being the only bidder.

    If you like these that much then keep your eyes open for a pair of Goodmans Mezzo SL speakers. They use the same SEAS tweeter with Goodman's own 10" woofer. The box is ported (but there's little flow through the port oddly) and the crossover is better. The SL crossover is 2nd order and has an EQ circuit that gives a little bump to the higher frequencies.
    I have two pairs of the Mezzo SLs, one finished in walnut and the other in mahogany and run them together with the top pair upside-down. I got the second pair because, for some of my music I like higher SPL than the single pair could manage on their own and my Marantz amp can handle 4 ohm loads. I've been into audio for years, have had many different speaker systems and I'll own these until I die. I couldn't buy better sounding speakers for 5 grand or more.

    • @MichaelYates

      Thanks for the comment Shaun and the heads up, now the Goodmans sound very interesting indeed and I will without a doubt keep my eyes open for a pair. I like the a-35's a lot and have read some people having 2 pairs of them or a25's and doing the same as you on top upside down.

      @@MichaelYates Good stuff. The Mezzo SLs are a bit harder to find than Dynacos. Part of the reason for that is they sold for a whopping 448 quid when new. They were made in England and Goodmans didn't ship a lot internationally but they did do a kit form of them that were sold in the US and Australia. They aren't always as good as they used a different woofer (but they're still a very good speaker). That said some prebuilt SLs from late in their production run use different, lesser drivers as well, both woofer and tweeter. Goodmans was on the way out in the late 70s as a top-tier speaker manufacturer as cheaper imported speakers started to cut into their bottom line. IMHO the Mezzo SL was the pinnacle of a long and illustrious run of Goodmans manufacturing top-notch speakers, after that they started competing on price with imports and finally sold the name before their stock dropped too low. Cheers.

      @@MichaelYates The good thing about the Mezzo SLs (they have to be the 'SL' version, there was an earlier Mezzo that wasn't anywhere near as good) is that they aren't as well known as the Dynacos. In my area at least when they do come up for sale, as there is only a small percentage of the population who know how good they are, they can sometimes be had cheaply. Best of luck.

      @@Shaun.Stephens Thanks for all the extra info Shaun, I have been looking on eBay here in the UK and I have just missed 2 pairs that sold recently £59 and £25, got them in my save searches now so fingers crossed another pair pops up. I will make sure they have the right drivers. I will be intouch if I managed to get a apair and thanks again.

    • @Shaun.Stephens
      @Shaun.Stephens 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MichaelYates You're welcome Michael. Good luck! I'm sure you'll enjoy them if you get some. The 'right' woofer has a wide flange at the top and the bottom with the sides 'cut off' to allow for 10" driver to sit in the relatively narrow front baffle. There's also "Made in England" cast into the bottom flange. Some of them are natural aluminium and some are black anodised - my walnut pair are unfinished aluminium and the mahogany pair (a /little/ later I think) are black anodised.
      Most of the kits had the top and bottom driver flanges also removed (even though the baffle was routed for the earlier driver). I think some of these drivers also made it into pre-built boxes at the end of the run. I've heard that at the very end they stopped using the (expensive) SEAS H087 1.5" silk dome - alnico magnet tweeter and used an in-house driver that wasn't as good. Cheers.

    Hi Michael, you hit the jackpot there with those Dynaco speakers. I would personally keep them, perhaps as reference speakers. The A25 is probably going to be more expensive, if you can find them. SEAS has come out with a new kit, called A26. That will set you back about £500,- in speaker components for one box.
    Oh and if you can pick up a Dynaco amplifier for reasonable money, don't let that pass by either.

    • @MichaelYates
      @MichaelYates  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes these are definate keepers. The reference sounds a good idea. Very much like what Scott at StereoNiche does with a pair of Advent he uses as a reference against he's other speakers. Nice vintage items on he's channel

  • @janrbh17
    @janrbh17 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I love those speakers. The bass is fat and lovely. I guess it is because of big rubber surround ( which never perish. So no reconing necessary) and maybe the small magnet = "sloppy" bass?. If you have a closed box of about 80 liters ( 30 X 40 X 70 box aprox.) you can put 2 of those 10-inch and have a really nice subwoofer that doesnt need THAT much amplifying.
    I have about 14-16 of those 10-inches. Put them everywhere 🙂

    • @MichaelYates
      @MichaelYates  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They do a A50 which has 2 of the 10 inch drivers in which I would love to hear. 14-16 drivers that is a lot and pretty much says how much you must love them. Excellent

    Hard to believe an audiophile of your age had not heard of Dynacos, the A25 was (and probably remains) the highest volume selling speaker in history with I believe some 6 million units sold. The crossover is dead simple, just a capacitor to keep the lows out of the tweeter, there's no coil, the woofer rolls off physically due to its mass. Also, for one of the commenters this is considered a 10" woofer, they are not measured by the cone size nut by basket size.

    • @MichaelYates
      @MichaelYates  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes a bit embarrising TBH , these came out I think a little earlier than when I started getting in to HiFi and I would have been in the phase of getting the latest thing out being taken in by all the specs back in them days

    • @Shaun.Stephens
      @Shaun.Stephens 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Dynaco DID sell a lot of A25s but the accepted figure is actually 600,000 pairs rather than 6,000,000.

    They're not 10 inch they are 8 inch you measure from the inside of the surround they are seas drivers, I built a mtm using those drivers and it was a marvellous speaker using a third order on the tweeter
    To me the box looks a little bit small what's the litre size if you look at the magnet on the woofer you'll be surprised how small the magnet is they have to be kept in a seal box. If they're the same driver what they look like.
    Get another set of drivers and make a MTM 65 l box
    I found the stuffing was best about 70% in total that's with fibreglass insulation wool probably less with foam didn't try foam. Put a good 5mm of blu tack beading around the driver as a gasket you can sandwich it with a piece of stiff paper between that and the drive
    I found that a massive improvement on the chipboard cabinets I was using. It will open the speaker up and reduce any boominess.
    Try tilting them back about 5° you should get better time alignment, have you tried them upside down with an open stand or three legged stall that might work quite well.

    • @MichaelYates
      @MichaelYates  ปีที่แล้ว

      All the info I have found on the SEAS 25TV-EW has it as a 10 inch driver and measures 10 inches in these. I have not tried them upside down yet, but was reading on a few forums with people that have 2 pairs with one normal way and other upside down on it. Now only if I can get another pair.

    • @hoobsgroove
      @hoobsgroove ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MichaelYates they don't look 10 inches all depends where you measure it from lol
      Easy to make some cabinets just get some chipboard you could use an inch worktop but an inch on the front baffle 65L. jigsaw or router cut out the holes and just use some 1 by 1 pine stock and screw the cabinet and glue it together. shame in this country I don't know where you can get it pre-cut? in America they free cut them for you but I don't think there's anywhere in the UK that will do that retailer?

    • @itisjustacomment
      @itisjustacomment 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@hoobsgrooveB and Q used to cut wood in the UK and 'do it all ' where I used to work but they are shut down now.
      I'm sure places do but now they charge by cut when before you just had to but the product.
      I build many a speaker in time, will be easy now as youtube has people teaching others the inside planning and Dimensions to size of speaker used is important.
      Best option of a beginner is just to copy others manufactures. As that's how I stated ,then I got into volume of box to size and output of speaker working out on paper , then on top tbe complex shape of inner box design with long base travel route etc .
      So much fun ,until you realize you are a building two.
      I found my friends and family wanted them also at cost price lol

    Hi Michael….the magnets on those drivers look to be Alnico….that’s probably the magic mojo that you are hearing…..hang onto them! Alnico drivers can lose magnetism over time which may explain the subjective sensitivity….well maybe (I’m no expert) 😀
