Al Stewart is one of the all time great recording artists. But, guys, the radio played songs like that almost all the time. Smooth music that you could dance to. I'm 75 now and I still have them in my collection. You want to talk about a play list. . . . . I am thrilled that you young guys find value for the music that was important to us. Keep on, my friends.
Absolutely. You would think that the next generation would move on to something else which is what I thought was going to happen. It's like they hunger for this kind of music because what's being played isn't for everybody
You guys crack me up. These two, Year of the Cat and Time Passages, are brilliant. I’m in my late 60s and have loved them for years. Phil Kenzie on alto was my idol as a budding sax player and of course I learned the whole solo (badly)! The London Symphony did the strings which totally complete the fabric of TP. Plus, Al’s pitch is incredible and he nails the octave on “into Time Passages” which is what you three are raving about. Also, THANK YOU for not talking through the whole song. I had tears in my eyes from not only listening to Al but watching you three marvel at it. Today’s music is mostly trash to me but these two…glorious. Thank you SO MUCH!
That’s what music does to people when they listen to a song for the first time. It’s like a light bulb moment when you discover how a song is produced. After that you can really enjoy hearing it over and over and love it that much more. It was good back then, hearing it again in 2023 makes it even more fantastic.
I'm so with you on everything you wrote. All our 70's music.. and to now watch 3 young dudes appreciate. Its..sharing the awesome Al Stewart magic. Hey from Aus.. 🇦🇺 😀
Great post! Thanks for sharing. I'm not a musician but was literally raised on the radio in the 70's then MTV and radio in the 80's. Phil Woods solo on "Just the way you are , Wayne Shorter on Aja by steely Dan"and Ravenscroft solo on "Baker Street" are perhaps the only solos that can rival it.
I never get tired of re-watching your reactions to this song, even though I know what's coming. It's just way too much fun and too satisfying seeing all three of you intoxicated on Al. It's no wonder his people contacted you.
I also loved Al Stewart when nobody else thought he was good. I'm 60 and remember how much I loved his music. It's on my playlist. So glad you guys appreciate him.
You guys are going back to my youth. I was born in 1963 and all the music after that has been better than anything coming out today. Thank y'all for that.
Your video of Boz Scaggs/Lowdown popped up in my feed, so I listened to it for the umpteenth time, and when it was over, I thought, why not listen to the Al Stewart videos again? Already did Year of the Cat, then came here, and now going to Song on the Radio. I would be curious to know how many times I have heard these reactions...at least 10 times each. These reactions are so JOYFUL!!😊🥰
Al Stewart, the singing historian - one of the greatest you'll ever know! First time listeners are lucky to discover Al's music. It's more like in a 'bucket list' of pursuing your musical greats!
I've listened to your year of the cat and time passages videos back to back with my earbuds, like 10 times over the past week. Everytime I laugh AND tear up. WTF?
I'm 61 and I often forget how damn lucky I was growing up with so much amazing music in that period in the 60s, 70s and 80s. My reaction 40 years ago was exactly like yours today! Mind blowing quality!
I have seen Al Stewart 5 times and am going to see him again in Las Vegas at the Smith Center on 1/13/24. I own 11 of his albums. Another great song is off the Last Days of the Century Album-King of Portugal. Another song on the Time Passages album you may like is End of the Day. A short song featuring Peter White on Spanish Guitar. Al has always had great musicians and he is a great acoustical guitar player in his own right. Sometime in the early 90s Peter White broke away to do his own thing as a Smooth Jazz Artist. When Peter White plays he has such intense joy he looks like he is having an Orgasm at times. We have seen him at least 3 times on his own. One of my wife's favorite artists. We met in 1997 and have been married for 25 years. Our first dates were at the Hyatt Newporter in Newport Beach, CA at the Hyatt Newporter Jazz Concert series. Peter White was in the lineup. Purchasing those season tickets served me well.
Hi guys Great to see you appreciating this stuff from my younger days. First saw Al busking at Liverpool Uni in 1968!! Great talent but without Alan Parsons’ production and Phil Kenzie on sax this wouldn’t have happened. It’s a real team effort.
The utterly fantastic Al Stewart one of Scotland’s greatest exports a super talented singer/songwriter from the 1970’s so what’s not to like. . . but nice to see and hear you younger guys enjoying the stuff we took for granted back in the day.
This song, along with "Year of the Cat" both have so much going on in them, yet they come across as so simple and gentle. These are 2 songs you could play a hundred times in a row and never get tired of hearing them.
Great reactions to Al Stewart classics and his albums have masterful storytelling which also include 'On the border', 'Palace of Versailles', 'A man for all seasons' and so on. Another classic that I believe should be checked out is John Miles song simply called 'Music' an absolute must, Sting 'Fields of Gold' and Eva Cassidys version as well as Eva's version of 'Over the Rainbow', Dire Straits Alchemy Live versions of 'Sultans of Swing' and On the night Live 'Brothers in Arms' and Mike Oldfield 'En Dulci Jubilo'.
Great list, I couldn't agree more, but I would like to add Gordon Lightfoot's Wreak of the Edmund FitzGerald, Circle of Steel, Beautiful, If You Could Read My Mind, Sunny Side of Life, Steel Rail Blues and of course The Canadian Railroad Trilogy (it's one song not three). Phenomenal storyteller folk at its best.
Palace of Versailles was my vero first Al song I heard in the afternoon on a Local Radio, South Italy, no Internet, no DJ... I recorded finally on a lucky afternoon on cassette, 1999, I was 13... I toke this cassette to all music lover that I Know to know who is this Band or Artist, what is the Name of the song... Finally my Uncle renew him as Al Stewart... Then i Go to the very first Music Store... No Al Stewart... Nothing... Few months later i bought a 56k Modem... And few months later of sloooooooooowly download, i've a first Collection of Al Song... Now, 25 years later, i've sticked on this and similar music. And forever will be cit.
From the Wikipedia page on this song: "Time Passages" reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in December 1978, and also spent ten weeks at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Easy Listening chart, the longest stay at number one on this chart in the 1970s. Billboard magazine also ranked "Time Passages" as the No. 1 Adult Contemporary single of 1979.
I was feeling down about, well, a lot of things and I somehow wound up back here rewatching this one and your "Year of the Cat" reaction. Bad mood officially obliterated. I'm so glad I found this channel. Thanks again guys!
First time I heard this song was the winter of ‘79. My brother was 16 years old and I was 9 years old. We were driving somewhere when this song came on the radio. We instantly loved this song. Every year when it starts snowing in late December I always call him and sing that first lyric. My boys mom, who I’ve been divorced from for 24 years, never heard this song until she met me and she loves it. Same as both my boys who are 29 and 25. This song just brings great memories to me. I’m so glad that someone is finally sitting down to hear this song for the first time. It’s almost like I will be hearing it for the first time again.
Dudes! Yeah, your comments pretty much hit the nail on the head. Word of Warning though. When you get to your 50s, this song will have so much more meaning. All the verses will hit home, and you'll realize that the music mimics how the mind plays back memories of triumphs, regrets, "what-if"s, happiness, sadness and other moments in your life. This song is truly a masterpiece.
Oh my dude, you nailed it. I was 15 when this came out. It resonated with me instantly. My best bud told me I liked it so munch because I was an old soul. Maybe I was….I certainly am now..LOL
The best thing about a truly enjoyable reaction video is when you are able to connect with the song AND tune in to things I personally never thought about musically when I heard it all those years ago. I simply knew I loved it. Glad you enjoy it so much. Maybe with more of young people spreading the word, artists will start exploring and producing this type of music again.
This song is like a time machine for me. Every time I hear this song especially on the sax solos, it takes me away to my childhood back in the 1970's. I was 8 years old when this song came out. I remember hearing this song being played on the FM radio at that time. Such a true classic!
In 2007 I had just taken a late, nearly empty train home from Manchester, UK. It was "late in December, and starting to snow" when I picked up the mail in the dim hall of my empty house, and walked into the kitchen. I flicked on the electric kettle and the radio. I opened an envelope with an overseas stamp to learn that my oldest friend and schoolmate since age 12 -- then professor of Chemisty at a Midwestern University, -- had been killed in an auto accident in the States. Numb with disbelief, I read and re-read the letter until the kettle whistled. As I automatically poured my tea, "Time Passages" by Al Stewart began to play on the radio. I sat at the table and listened to the lyrics, gazing sightlessly out the dark window, undrunk tea cooling before me. When the song finished I switched off the radio. The song echoed in my mind for the next few days as I realised that with this loss I was suddenly middle aged; and I had lost the only friend with whom I would have wanted to want to talk about it. "Buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight". 😢
Ah.........I am so sorry for you r loss - the songs that we hear mark the events of our lives, good and bad. Hopefully, at this time, you can hear this with fondness. It's beautiful and being middle aged and still maintaining the ability to feel is a blessing........a true blessing.
Hugs, is so hard to lose our friends. It's a different experience from losing parents because we expect them to be around after our parents die. Huge, warm hugs.
This reminds me of my carefree youth before responsibilities kicked in. Cruising through the streets on Hot Springs, or Little Rock. Brings back great memories.
😉👍🏽 Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos took the music world by storm in the 60’s and 70’s. They had downsized piano actions that stuck a steel bar or steel wire and then amplified through stereo tremolo amplifiers. From Ray Charles to the Eagles to the Carpenters, Rhodes & Wurlitzers ruled !
It's so great to see you young guys liking true talent! I'm 62. As i type this, it's 2 years after your review. Al Stewart's 2 big albums were released in my High School Days. To me and my best friend, Eric Froesch, (R.I.P.), he was the greatest thing since sliced bread. But Disco came around, and drownded him out. Now this was the 8 track days. OK? (I still have the albums). I wore out 4 "Year of the Cat" 8 tracks. Both albums are complete master pieces. I promise you. But seeing that i'm typing this 2 years later, in 2023, by now, i'm sure you know how superior his complete work is. His last song on the "Time Passages" album, titled "End of the Day", was George Harrison's all time favorite song. Seriously.
Beautiful and ethereal , the song brought out emotions in me as a teenager in the late 70s that I didn't know I had but now as an adult words fail me in describing the beauty and pain in this epic song
Great reaction guys. This was just another hit during the 70's. We had so much good music back then. Glad you guys are hearing the music we grew up with. Al, just played rhythm guitar, sang, and wrote great songs.
Okay I am not gonna lie, I was hooked on watching Yotc video. Now, I can’t stop watching this one! I just can’t it’s so good!! One of you wants to change your name, the other want him to be his daddy and Ty is naming his first child after him.. LOL 😂 You three are fantastic. You’re like therapy with great music for me 🤩🤩🤩
Great reaction video. Just happened upon your site. So happy to see the younger generations listening to and appreciation the songs of the 70’s. If you havent heard of the Carpenters, a brother and sister duo, Karen played drums and sang and her brother Richard did amazing arrangements and played the piano. Superstar, A Song for You, and Close to You are great examples. Keep reacting and we’ll keep on listening. Excellent work!!!

You have experienced tempo, lyrical, and instrumental perfection. Timeless rhythm of life. So so glad this is from my era of singer song writers who were connected to the humanitarian vibe of draw you in anthems of pure lyrics and connectivity of life warming sounds that lift you up and recognize real joy of the sounds of music and phenomenal story telling in an absolutely blended vibe of utter balanced perfection of the human experience. This is Al Stewart in the nutshell - incomparable !!
DUE TO THESE GUYS THE MUSIC OF THE 70S AND 60S IT KEEP FOREVER. THEY ARE RECONQUERING THE WONDERFULL AND THE PURE MAGIC ON EACH DETAIL OF THE NOTES OF THE 70S MUSIC THAT TODAY THERE IS NOT!!! AL STEWART IS A GENOIUS, I LISTENED IN DECEMBER 1978, AND "TIME PASSAGES" ALWAYS A DREAM THAT MADE SONG!!!
Awesome guys! Time Passages is awesome! Year of the Cat is Total Fire too!! Have you heard of/played The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia, by Vicky Lawrence? Talk about a story in song!! Total Fire guys! You guys rock... Peace out!
Al plays the guitar in most of his songs . . and the reason you're liking this one as much as "The Year Of The Cat" is because they were both produced by Alan Parsons . .
Thanks for bringing that up because Al CAN PLAY MOST OF THE GUITAR PARTS IN HIS SONGS, but he has to delegate a lot of it . Although he probably couldn't play Renwicks licks they were out of this world
Love your reactions and comments. This came out when I was in middle school. Brings back memories. The way that sax solo comes in is so subltle. It's flavored with late 70's-early 80's music production!
I’ve just got back to my hotel after having seen Al Stewart in concert. The live rendition, with his excellent backing band, of Time Passages was fantastic!
(2)Master class, older LP's of Al Stewart are huge! Master historical novella lyrics about huge spots in history. Exceptional music reflects the subject matter. "Modern Times" and "Past, Present and Future"
“Roads to Moscow”….do not pass go…do not collect $200. Run to “Roads to Moscow”. Easily Al’s best. I consider Al Stewart to be one of the 5 best Song Writers of our age. History interwoven into excellent melodies and intonation.
I heard this on a "progressive" rock station in '74. His voice is what hooked me. And then the storytelling. My best friend , Dana, and I were invited to go back stage at the Tower theater (Upper Darby, Pa) to meet AL. That was the beginning of a fun and magical time for us. Dana sadly died in '94. I continue to see him in concert to this day. All for Dana. I miss her every day!!!
I smile ear to ear watching you guys enjoy this song! I was born in 1971 and loved the music from my childhood and never have appreciated it more than now with the absence of such great music. They just don’t make them like that anymore!! I raised my 4 daughters listen to my old music, trying to keep it alive!
Another great song by Al!! Big fan!! Also check out, On The Border, Broadway Hotel and Song On The Radio. All excellent tunes!! I've had the privilege of seeing him 3 times. Never disappointed.
Great reaction! You got to do "On The Border", "Roads to Moscow", and "Running Man". Best storytelling ever. Al Stewart is one of the most underrated bands from that era.
You guys are fire!! LOL (I've never heard that expression before you.) You guys have me in stitches. It is SO much fun watching your reactions. Whenever I need a lift, I watch one of your reviews. Thanks for the memories of these old songs and the laughs. I wish you HUGE success with this channel. :)
I bought this single when I was 14 in 1978. It just connected with me the first time I heard it on the radio and I had reached the age where music would overtake sports as my primary interest for the rest of my life. I had heard “Year Of The Cat” on the radio before but it was just another song during an era where incredible music filled the airwaves but after “Time Passages,” I listened to YOTC again while really paying attention and it floored me. I would get both albums the following year and then slowly accumulate his entire catalog over the next few years. The man is an incredible songwriter and his grasp of history is astounding. I once went backstage after one of his shows and someone asked him what he would have done if the music thing had not worked out. He said “Oh, I would have been a history teacher.” No doubt. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Al play live 12 times since 1984 and it’s always a treat. He tells stories about the songs in between that are worth the price of admission alone. He’s very funny too! Of the times I’ve seen him live, the highlight would have to be seeing him perform The Year Of The Cat album in its entirety with a full band (including many of the musicians who played on the album) at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2015. They also played “Time Passages” that night. Superb! I’m currently awaiting the 50 CD box set that will be released in June.
Gah! Here I am again, watching this reaction...so good. I really, REALLY wish I knew a way to get Al to see how much you love his songs. I think he’d be as thrilled as we are!! ♥️
You guys are so full of personality. I really enjoy all three of you going through song such as this. I was 21 years old at the time of year of the cat and Time Passages. It's good to say they are living on. I just wanted to shout out a thank you.
Though I’ve heard this song a million times, I’ve been coming here this last one week daily just to see your expressions. Love the way you appreciate all the nuances in the song. Please do more songs of Al.
There are plenty of one hit wonders, but Al is a two hit wonder for fantastic songs. He brings some British way of life because most travel is by rail. In 1976 and 1978 those songs were played constantly on the radio seemingly for months.
I'm 65, and I was truly blessed with the music I grew up with.
My sentiments exactly!
I am jealous as I will never have that feeling of hearing this masterpiece for the first time again. Stunning music
It is so phenomenal to see young guys forty years younger than me react the same way I did when I first heard the song in October 1978😂❤!
Absolutely. You would think that the next generation would move on to something else which is what I thought was going to happen. It's like they hunger for this kind of music because what's being played isn't for everybody

10 years behind you but yeah, no autotune, few takes, great musicians, fire! 😘🔥

Phil Kenzie on the sax. One of the best at his craft.
Absolutely one of the finest!
I also loved Al Stewart when nobody else thought he was good. I'm 60 and remember how much I loved his music. It's on my playlist. So glad you guys appreciate him.
Al Stewart music takes me to vacation heaven❤😊
You guys are going back to my youth. I was born in 1963 and all the music after that has been better than anything coming out today. Thank y'all for that.
I'm a 1963 baby too. Grew up with incredible music.
Now, THAT, Fellas, is MUSIC!!! THANKS for the GREAT REACTION!!!
I told my sons they got ripped off on music.
But, Thank god they had me, I played everything from my generation all the time. They heard. 😎
I watched you guys reviewing this song probably 30 times 😃😁😂😂😂
Yes, I keep watching them also. These guys are very funny, but they are also appreciative of very good artists like Al Stewart.
Damn, I thought I was the only one!! lol
Damn, I thought I was the only one!! lol
30 times out of….your such a newbie ! lol I have watched this and Year of the Cat and I must say Roads to Moscow .
me 100 times LOL
Al Stewart always brilliant!

❤😄
Yes!!!
Agree I am with you beautiful music!
I hear you I am 64 and love the music we had none can compare.

Al Stewart is so prolific. He is a genius at his craft.
“On the Border” rates a one of his greatest story telling songs! You guys may also like Michael Franks.
Good suggestion!!!❤❤

That’s Monument Valley Utah on album cover… love you 3 ❤❤❤
Toward the end of the song, Kenzie plays the highest sax note ever recorded. Beautiful tune, along with YOTC ofc

Very insightful truth....
Very well put Edward
There is no one to prepare you for time passages when you get older. It's thrilling at the same time as humbling.
55 here! ...oh yes. Strange; here I am, mid-30s in my mind at most, my shell getting older, and I wonder how this all happens.
Oh my dude, you nailed it. I was 15 when this came out. It resonated with me instantly. My best bud told me I liked it so munch because I was an old soul. Maybe I was….I certainly am now..LOL
Come on Ty! Go ahead and SING! Loved this reaction!

You 3 make me smile. Plus it’s always a thrill when new people “get” something they’ve never heard before. Love Al!!!
I am from the 70's and Al Stewart was on of the best underrated artist of his time.
The opening note of the saxophone solo is the highest recorded note in a song from a saxophone.
Are you talking about "songs on a radio"?
You've brought us nice songs. Thanks a bunch. You're great!
I love all Al Stewarts songs as they are beautifully crafted
Absolutely
Thanks in part to Alan Parsons
@@timmclaughlin5033 I love Alan Parsons, too.

Thanks. @@rustyknyffe88
Hugs, is so hard to lose our friends. It's a different experience from losing parents because we expect them to be around after our parents die. Huge, warm hugs.
Hugs and thanks for sharing your story .
You will reunite. And they know you were thinking about them. Always with you
Love ta see people appreciating the great Al Stewart! ❤
Yes, especially for those of us who have appreciated Al all these years! Don't let the music fade away!
This reminds me of my carefree youth before responsibilities kicked in. Cruising through the streets on Hot Springs, or Little Rock. Brings back great memories.
😉👍🏽
Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos took the music world by storm in the 60’s and 70’s.
They had downsized piano actions that stuck a steel bar or steel wire and then amplified through stereo tremolo amplifiers.
From Ray Charles to the Eagles to the Carpenters, Rhodes & Wurlitzers ruled !
Okay… I know EVERYONE wants you to do “On The Border “…. Maybe it’s time. I’ll be here whenever you’re ready. It’s THAT good. Al Forever!
The radio didn’t play the whole song where I lived. Thus hearing some of this for the first time, too. And it sure sounds mighty fine in headphones.
Seriously.
The first time I heard the opening notes to this song, I was hooked and I ran to the record store and bought the album. Excellent decision.
Hey guys...just for your info it's the fantabulous 🎷Phil Kenzie🎷 on the sax with Year of the Cat and this tune...🎤🎸
I have waited over 40 years to discover other people loved this guys recordings as much as I do and have done since the late 70’s. 😊
Me too...
You definitely won't mistake Al Stewart for anybody else. Great reaction. Thanks!
Well said
Love you guys ❤ 🇦🇺
DUE TO THESE GUYS THE MUSIC OF THE 70S AND 60S IT KEEP FOREVER. THEY ARE
RECONQUERING THE WONDERFULL AND THE PURE MAGIC ON EACH DETAIL OF THE NOTES OF THE 70S MUSIC THAT TODAY THERE IS NOT!!!
Alan Parsons produced both Time Passages and Year of the Cat albums. Might I suggest Games People Play by Alan Parsons Project!
Or Time from APP
Alan Parsons Project is amazing!
Both from Turn of a Friendly Card. A great album!
TFC is such a killer album....
Great suggestion...!!
@@maxcrown2367 Amazing album.
The best solo artist of the last 200 years.
.....with great collaboration with white, tremendous musician in his own right.❤
I heard this on a "progressive" rock station in '74.
Love, love the lyrics. Specially nowadays
Now if anyone _should've_ been born in another era, it's you guys. Really fun watching you hear these songs for the first time - you really get it.
Another great song by Al!! Big fan!! Also check out, On The Border, Broadway Hotel and Song On The Radio. All excellent tunes!! I've had the privilege of seeing him 3 times. Never disappointed.
I was 11 in the 70s and love love it still❤❤❤❤❤
Some years less, but the same to me.
Great reaction! You got to do "On The Border", "Roads to Moscow", and "Running Man". Best storytelling ever. Al Stewart is one of the most underrated bands from that era.
You guys are gold 🏆. My Dad used to play this album on road trips to the beach. Miss him. Great memories of Al’s music.
una obra de arte
Watching him live and seeing him sing it with no struggle is amazing
You guys are doing a wonderful reaction to one of the most underrated songwriters in music history. AS is one of the greatest ever ! Thanks guys.
On The Border, On The Border, On The Border, On The Border, On The Border, On The Border.
My sentiments exactly. Love your reactions and that you really appreciate good music. I love the humor you inject into every reaction. Keep it up!
Always been one of favorites. Reminds me of high school
This guy was and is so underrated singer's! He ruled the airwaves for a while!
What I love about your channel is how open and honest you guys are about the songs you review. It's great to see young people enjoy old music.
Realmente preciosa esta cancion. Miestras caminaba hacia la escuela de bellas artes en mi mente sonaba esta cancion 1978
If Ryan likes spacey sounding songs from the 70's, he might like "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright. It's a good one!
Ugh..oh, nap time!
Lol, that was my thought too! That synth...
These 2 songs are just high level..especially us who love this many instruments
The album cover is Monument Valley
ROADS TO MOSCOW!!!...........................please. Epic! Particularly if you know history, WW2, Russia
The strings arrangement is magical, Peter White and the incomparable Phil Kenzie nail the door, Al is Al . Beautiful piece
His voice is so sweet & smooth, his diction perfect.
Well said!
Another classic from a great musician 🎷🎸🎶
Though I’ve heard this song a million times, I’ve been coming here this last one week daily just to see your expressions. Love the way you appreciate all the nuances in the song. Please do more songs of Al.
I am so happy You like My favorite song ever, it's beatiful
GRANDE AL STEWART !👏👏👏
Esse cara é Lenda irmão!
There are plenty of one hit wonders, but Al is a two hit wonder for fantastic songs. He brings some British way of life because most travel is by rail. In 1976 and 1978 those songs were played constantly on the radio seemingly for months.
Classic song , thanks for posting. 👍
You guys are hysterical, love your exuberance. By the way, his principal instrument is guitar and that is him playing the acoustic leads as well.
