I was there - Reading Festival 1991. Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, Nirvana. Iggy Pop headlined. I remember almost crying on the way home because I realised I'd never see anything that good again.
this version of Freak Scene blows away any other version of this song. i love when the crowd sings along at "cuz when i need a friend it's still you." then J & Murph go nuts. :)
There was a concert in NYC a few days ago with Dinosaur Jr, Kim Gordon, Lee Renaldo, Black Francis, Johnny Rotten, and Johnny Marr. I'd say that exceeds the epicness level.
This is the most incredible thing I’ve seen on TH-cam for a long time. Dinosaur jr just letting loose and tearing it up back in 1991... Back when grunge was cool, and bands played loud and messy music that spoke to outcasts, but could still attract huge crowds... If you were there in 91 you’d soak in that noise, forget your worries, fall in love and just ride the storm. This footage captures all that, it’s remarkable. Freak Scene was always a favourite for me, and what a performance of it here. Ive really stumbled on something special today, amazing to think I can enjoy this almost 30 years later. I’m actually so moved by this video, it’s beautiful. J Mascis was the coolest guy in the world in 91!
Cracking video called 1991: The year punk broke that this was filmed for, as long as loads of Nirvana, Sonic Youth, The Ramones, Mudhoney as well as back stage interviews footage. Can't believe that was 19 years ago.
I don't know if it's still available but there was a documentary of the Sonic Youth tour 1991 - The Year punk broke. I had it on VHS - brilliant live footage and also all the bands (mudhoney, nirvana, SY, Dinosaur to name a few) Great days. Will never be bettered.
underrated as shit. I mean they are known quite a bit, but the fact that their influenced bands overshadow these originators so much sickens me. Fantastic song by the way.
Saw Dinosaur Junior at Sheffield Arena 1994 with Blur, My Bloody Valentine and Jesus and Mary Chain. Loved Dnr Jr. Awesome. Loved MBV. Loved JMC. However must add Blur were really rocking and almost loudest that night as well!!!! Dnr Jr mind. :-)
Fuck they're just an amazing band! I loved that video. Hope it gets a DVD release sometime. Henry Rollins' best friend and old Black Flag roadie, Joe Cole, can be seen on the side of the stage with a big smile on his face. This was possibly not long before he was tragically killed. R.I.P. Joe
Would have loved to see this. I have seen all of them on differant tours, actually saw Sonic Youth opening for Neil Young...I thought they were great, but the crowd was huge and the venues were large...they seemed out of their element! Neil just seemed so much bigger than SY...it was like the building swollowed them up. Saw Dino Jr. just last year in a small club that I have played in Castaways in upstate NY.
I wish I was old enough back then, to be aware of such a concert. I was only 2 when this film came out. Damn, Most of my generation's biggest alt. artist are underground. But since my generation is currently being inundated with Lady Gaga, I have a feeling that some alt rock band is gonna come up and change the course of music for our generation, somewhat similar to what Nirvana did in the early 90's at a time when Gnex was being inundated with HairMetal. I'm 21 right now, I wish for this NOW!!
Anybody else notice Murph's insane machine-like drumming on this clip? Best version of the song I've ever heard. They lift the song to a whole new plateau on this version.
now thats what i'm talking about that day was a good day . . . i even liked chapterhouse .. !! thee first day of my first festival - i knew you would care
what a killer performance. this is the song and video that got me into dinosaur. is that joel cole rocking with his lady on the sida of the stage? hope it is... love how much you can see them enjoying the band!
Awesome vid. Perhaps it's a little corny and stage-showy, but I like J's movement from 0.22 - 0.36. As a whole, the boys had great stage presence that day.
@sillysp8 dude i was at the thurston show, but thats the only gig he's playing, its normally the band OFF! opening for them which is also a really awesome band if you dont know you should check out, its keith morris's new band
This is my FAVORITE Dino Jr. performance & song. Better than the album, even. J is just on top of his game. Does anybody know exactly what pedal J uses to get that whooshing Jet sound at 0:32 and 0:35 ? I could never figure it out. Sounds like a Phaser of some kind..
@whatamess1789 im not a guitar wiz or sumthing but I guess its a phaser pedal if you want that sound on your guitar go to your guitar shop and test some
haha!!!!! you crack me up. omg haha. thats so funny when people tell me that one day ill grow out of liking the music that i like and will realize how it is crap. and im not under the impression that speed and musical ability is better than good songwriting. i listen to plenty of bands that have slow, easy to play songs that i like. it doesnt have to do with whether the songs are hard to play, it has to do with the song being good. if your gonna base an argument on a selected few of my fav bands

no joke.
I’ll forever be sad I didn’t get to experience that because I was born too late
truth
Wow babes in toyland aswell... thats awesome
I'd cry if I had to watch fucking sonic youth too

1991 : The year that punk broke.
What a fantastic documentary that was. Still got it on video. God Bless proper music
Ehm ... 1976 'twas...

This is from the 1991 film The Year Punk Broke
Brilliant live track, can't believe how fast and tight Murph is. DJ in their prime.
no doubt
That dude at 1:17 got killed shortly after this. He was a friend of Henry Rollins and got murdered during a robbery in his home. Name is Joe Cole.
The Sonic Youth songs "100%" and "Dirty" are about him, he was a close friend of theirs as well
Duuuuude mind BLOWN. THAT IS JOE COLE.
I had no idea that was Joe Cole. That’s spooky
:/
His chick was hot as all fuck.
Probably the best guitar player in the alternative "grunge" genre.
Cracking video called 1991: The year punk broke that this was filmed for, as long as loads of Nirvana, Sonic Youth, The Ramones, Mudhoney as well as back stage interviews footage. Can't believe that was 19 years ago.
1:45 - 1:57
gives me chills every single time.
Dinsaur Jr, Sonic-Youth AND Nirvana!?
Damn..
I FUCKING LOVE WHAT J DOES WITH THE PHASER PEDAL IN THE CHORUS!!!! Very creative and saves energy. :)
Yeeeeeaaaaaahhhhhh! Saw them last summer in NYC. They're still great. It's great to see Barlow back in the mix.
This clip has always made me suspect that the song was written as a vehicle for the flanger.
looks like lee ranaldo skulking around backstage at the start
Now THIS is what I'm talking about! Thanks for this great vid!
I was at this concert, 20 years later I am still listening to this tune and it is still as awesome as it was in 1991
Love this song. rocked then with the crazy film clip. Still rocks now. Has that "fresh, hip sound" the young kids of today like so much :P
Thanks so much for posting this. I' ve been looking for sometime.
excellent post thank you
Best version of this song!

1991, reading festival footage...
i miss my youth.

Amazing guitar solo
Just love Murph’s style! Head down, no drama, just solid drumming. Awesome 3 piece! 👍
Yes. All the best in one tour.
wow! a video from a time before I joined youtube ^^
Fuck they're just an amazing band! I loved that video. Hope it gets a DVD release sometime.

R.I.P. Joe
Wow that would have been the best tour in history dinosaur Jr. , sonic youth and NIRVANA! THOSE ARE MY FAVORITE BANDS WOW
The slacker Hendrix!
(J would hate it, though)
wow. what an amazing concert!!
i would probably give up a limb to have been there!!!!
love the solo with the flanger
I wish i was at this concert. Unfortunately i wasn't alive in the time of good music
Goddd I would have killed to see this tour! Nirvana, SONIC YOUTH and DINOSAUR JR.
i was there!
missed nirvana on the friday afternoon - hadn't heard of them... ...saw them top the bill the next year though!
Would have loved to see this. I have seen all of them on differant tours, actually saw Sonic Youth opening for Neil Young...I thought they were great, but the crowd was huge and the venues were large...they seemed out of their element! Love this!
excellent guitarist;this guy can really fucking play
Best guitarist of his generation.
@JediJoe22 Too true, mate. The ironic thing is that if they knew music like this existed, at least 75% of my school would fall in love.
Oh my God. I wish I could have gone to this tour... too bad I wasn't alive yet...
I like it even more fast.
I wish I was old enough back then, to be aware of such a concert. I was only 2 when this film came out. Damn, Most of my generation's biggest alt. artist are underground. @PeripheralSenses I love this comment you summed it up beautifully.
seein the year punk broke when i was in high school in the early 90s....changed everything

I still watch my old VHS from time to time...
Too good. Make a song as good as freakscene and I am a fan for life........
@PeripheralSenses This might be the best thing ever posted in a comments section on the internet. Ever.
Always love DJ!
From Reading 1991, about two or three hours after Nirvana's legendary set.

Anybody else notice Murph's insane machine-like drumming on this clip? Best version of the song I've ever heard. They lift the song to a whole new plateau on this version.
この怠け者の無気力人間がギターを持って大爆発している感じスゴイネ。

That's a good line up!
Mike V - Speed Freaks. Good times.
so fuken awesome ..
i wish i was in that crowd
1992 Reading Festival.
I am somewhere near the front in that crowd.
Pure Joy!
Awesome vid. Perhaps it's a little corny and stage-showy, but I like J's movement from 0.22 - 0.36. As a whole, the boys had great stage presence that day.
Yeah it's kind of an exploit of pop and noise but this song is as much an anthem of grunge as there ever was
true
Keanu would give up everything to play bass in Dinosaur Jr
DIO MIO!
@PeripheralSenses you are awesome.
1991 the year punk broke! also the year i was born :(
this inspires me to practice my scales
@sillysp8 dude i was at the thurston show, but thats the only gig he's playing, its normally the band OFF! opening for them which is also a really awesome band if you dont know you should check out, its keith morris's new band
@catguyauble NO. Same event, just a different year. Pavement played Reading four years later.
and then Pixies, Radiohead, R.E.M. and Smashing Pumpkins
d JUNIOR IS THE LAST OF MANY GREATS! ENJOY WHILE YOU CAN!
wooow nice use for phaser!
MAN Murph's drum fill at 1:20 is fucking awesome.

I love how the audience knows the words!

but I guess its a phaser pedal
if you want that sound on your guitar go to your guitar shop and test some

Out of tune at the end of his solo. Sure sign of a solo well done!
haha!!!!! you crack me up. omg haha. thats so funny when people tell me that one day ill grow out of liking the music that i like and will realize how it is crap. and im not under the impression that speed and musical ability is better than good songwriting. i listen to plenty of bands that have slow, easy to play songs that i like. it doesnt have to do with whether the songs are hard to play, it has to do with the song being good. if your gonna base an argument on a selected few of my fav bands
