- IMO, kinda underrated arcade mix. It's actually an okay mix and I have high respect for this since all new songs are accessible in its console counterpart, never mind the banners being background crops. Revived songs received proper banners in the future though not everything has been revived.
This mix removed a majority of DDR 1st-3rd mix songs with only 20 remaining, usually the ones that were fan favorites at the time. It also introduced long version songs, which were no longer repeated until DDR X.
The default order is by song difficulty. So it varies when you're playing single or double.
Yellow songs - Hidden beatmania songs
Green songs - New songs
Blue songs - Old songs
Here's a link what would the PS1 version of DDR 5th Mix would look like if it had proper banners. I got creative with Stepmania. Most of the custom made banners I got them from ZIV.

So many great songs were introduced in this mix. Lack of proper banners aside, I have always loved this interface. It's so clean and stylised. I wish they'd made a Dancing Stage game based on 5th Mix, a songlist based on the music of 4th and 5th would have been great.
5th Mix had a wonderful array of songs. Not to mention the debut of Alice.
grew up playing a fifth mix machine, it was awesome.
While I really started playing with MAX2 and only played a 5th Mix arcade a handful of times(likewise 4th, 3rd, 1st, and USA), I now recognize this one as the start of what I'd call the "second era" of DDR where the game had the core formula established, freestyle play fell out of fashion and score attack became the dominant form of tournaments. 5th Mix added the song wheel and a different genre emphasis(way more Eurobeat and catering to Japanese audiences specifically), MAX added the boss song concept, and then MAX2 and Extreme brought back old songs and put it all together into the most comprehensive System 573 versions of DDR.
(The "third era" would be defined by the ITG/Supernova split, and probably ends with DDR X3.)

This was my favorite DDR back in the 2000's decade. I would love to have it back in a console of this generation.
I'll always have soft spot for 5th Mix since it was my introduction to DDR right before Extreme dropped and all the Arcades around got Extreme machines. For the ones that kept their 5th along with Extreme, they usually set the price of 5th to $0.50, where Extreme was usually $1.00, which was great since a lot of the songs I really liked were on both versions.
My big brother had a burn of a burn so you had to start up the PS1 with another cd and switch in the burn. Sometimes the music would cut out mid song and we would have to try to just go by memory. We also had a janky pad that sometimes wouldn't work. Still nostalgia trippin' hard over here
That's usually the problem with rhythm games during the PS1 era, not just DDR.
I had the EXACT same one. I had to put a spring in to my PS1's lid, it allowed you to put in codes to play JPN games.
I burned 3rd mix and 4th mix. Can't remember if I did 5th mix. And yes sometimes the sound would cut out or the burn would fail. Good times lol
I started playing right around when max2 came out in the states but all the older better kids were lined up for it so I had to play 5th mix 😭 core memory unlocked
Waiting your turn in the arcades for DDR is always a pain. And it gets worse when players spam too much credits in one go.

3rdからそれまでANOTHERまでだったDPにMANIAC譜面が追加されて猛威を奮いましたよね！
個人的には4th plusから魔改造されたbutterflyのUPSWINGもなかなかのぶっとんだ譜面だったのが懐かしいです
あと何故かMAKE ME YOUR MOVE？みたいな弐寺からの曲がアーケードだと難易度9なのに家庭用では難易度7だったみたいな細かい誤植が面白かったです！

This is the arcade version. The ps1 version has only the new songs
