    Just a couple of minor jobs coming out of the recent test ride around the cul-de-sac!
    1. There seems to be a flow problem!
    2. I’m changing out the original size 17 modified pilot jets in the air and a L Premier carburetors for a more appropriate size 19 jet. By all accounts, they help the bike run a little richer.

    If you look at the jet just above the tapered part there should be some rings. 2 rings is a #17 and 3 rings is a #19.

    • @TheMightyGarage
      @TheMightyGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you very much, Mitch! I didn't know that. I just checked the jets that I took out and there are no rings, so I suspect they were not Amal but other aftermarket jets. I see now what you mean with the 1 ring = 15, 2 rings = 17 and 3 rings = 19. Many thanks for your advice! Cheers, Mike

    My 1968 750 commando ran out of gas in the middle of the Tacoma narrows Bridge. It had two reserve taps installed. A good Samaritan helped me get more gas. Later sawed the standpipe off of one of them.

    Loves these old bikes. They sound great and look great. Learned a lot about mechanics working and fine tuning these beautiful machines. Those were the good old days. They were simple yet a fine art to keep them running at there best. The worst thing about these bikes is that you can't keep the silly grin off your face while riding them.

    That's great. I find taking a closeup shot of jets and carb seats with my phone, and blowing them up, reveals a lot more detail than anything else.

    I installed #19 pilot jets in my 71 Roadster with new premier carbs for much the same reason. It was defiantly an improvement. I did the same to my 71 Bonneville and it was an amazing improvement.

    Well I was gonna post a comment on the desirablity of British parallel twins until at the end when there was that glimpse of the Vincents! 😁 But yeah....who among us can hope to own a Vinnie?? So we're back to parallel twins! Everyone made 'em.....they're all something to lust after in their own way. Triumphs always seemed to have great styling...pick your favourite year and/or model! BSA finally made art with the Rocket Goldie - but again....who'll ever own one?? So a Commando comes out as a strong option. And they're as pretty as those English models they used to photograph sitting on them in the old advertisements!

    • @TheMightyGarage

    Please be careful when turning the petrol taps. Use finger, but the thumb should support the tap shaft. These are brass, but the plastic ones are otherwise prone to breaking (which you mentioned as well). And the shaft will wear more, so wear out sooner, if the turning force is not supported by the thumb, but by tap shaft and housing.

    In the dying days of NVT etc, Amal was pressed to lower and lower prices as a supplier. And Amal products got worse and worse. But you'd think that the newly contemporary Amal carbs would be much better.

    I love these videos, and would like to ask Mike, if there is a video of recommended garage gear. Bike lifts, or others which are worthwhile. Also need to ask for your thoughts on the W800. I know, not British, but for those without the wherewithal, the purest homage to British bikes out there. Imho. :-)

    • @TheMightyGarage
      @TheMightyGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much for the suggestion. That's a really good idea. Yes, I'll give that some serious thought about doing a video of my favorite tools and equipment in the garage. I really like the new Kawasaki W800. They are a really great looking bike. I know what you mean about being closer to an original classic than some of the new modern classic triumphs. In the video that will go out tomorrow morning, there's another sneak peek at Pam's W650. Her husband Bruce started it up again and it reminded me again of the video in the cul-de-sac and how cool the bike looked. Best wishes, Mike

    A few comments. A) What the heck was that in the petcock and how did it get thru the screen? B) I had to go to 19s on my 930 premiere's on my 62 Bonneville, those jets ain't cheap and 3) I've noticed that the new monobloc carbs seem have issues with the tickler getting enough reach to flood the carb. I've had to machine a longer tickler to make it function properly. You could be there for days holding it down and nothing would happen.

    • @TheMightyGarage
      @TheMightyGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much! I'm not sure what that buildup was in the petcock! That's a smart idea about making a longer tickler. Yes, the 19 pilot jets seem to have done the trick! Thanks a lot, Mike

    I really enjoy all your videos and I hope you don't mind me saying. The Norton tick over sounds all over after the run and didn't sound right on setting of. Now you probably know better than me as you have a lot of experience with Nortons but from an old mechanic something doesn't sound right.

      Hi Kevin, thanks a lot. I just learned today that the official Amal jets are identified by the number of rings/grooves that they have at the tip of the jet. The ones that I took out didn't have any rings and so they mustn't have been OEM or perhaps they were older. Cheers, Mike

    "Cycle" magazine, Phil Schilling 1974.
    "The Norton vertical twin should have died and gone to legend a generation ago. In a world of perfect logic, engine designs should never maunder on for decades and finally be crushed by onrushing technology. Good ideas deserve better. Good engines should go to harvest in the fullness of their autumn; most mechanical things which struggle on simply die cold and wretched in December.
    Seasons do not cover England in perfect symmetry. Spring is cold and damp, and so is fall and winter. Onrushing technology there slows; the present walks in cadence with the past. And mechanical things like the Norton twin soldier on and on...through the Fifties...into the Sixties...and reach the mid-Seventies. In other places, someone would have raised the last hurrah at an earlier stage-when the original 500 twin turned to a 600, or 650, or 750, or 850. But somehow, no matter how deep Norton reaches into December, the final cheer never comes. There's only the next hurrah."
