Yes and no. 1. 過來退休，英文不能當然沒有問題，正如閣下所講，在日常生活上英國人都相對包容；不過出嚟搵食就另一個世界了。 我做的工作要向客戶解釋一些相當複雜的概念、通過電話做troubleshooting（即是說不能背稿）等等。如果一般英文都講到甩皮甩骨，試問如何勝任？客戶會有閒情逸致去慢慢估我究竟想講什麼嗎？ 很多人呻不能回到老本行，覺得自己懷才不遇（下刪一萬字），有多少人其實低估了英語能力的重要性呢？ 2. 英文不行，當然有人會提供中文服務 - at a price。例如想找一個識中文的律師或者地產經紀，當然會找得到，但是價錢會比當地人的律師和地產經紀高一截，還要冒被香港人「幫」的風險。
Avoid mentioning the word Three. I did it once just that . At the McDonald's, I placed an order of two Big Mac meals and then added , plus one more order of the same one . The one who took our orders then said there would be three all together . Two coffee and a Pepsi . 😎😊🙍🏼♀️
Don't be afraid to speak in broken English with certain accents or with improper pronunciation. Generally speaking, local people would try to get what you want to say or even help you so they could understand what you're talking about. They might show having a hard time to understand but no laughing matters. While I was once working with an passenger airline and met many people came from many countries speaking with broken English and with heavy accent similar speaking with their own language and no one in the airline ever brought that back later as a laughing matter . Another incident that I was working for Motorola as Plant Security in Illinois. Met one young man from India speaking English with very heavy accent of his native India . Finally our manager need to find someone from his department who could speak his native language to act as interpreter. The point is , this young man not afraid to speak while I suggested to him to learn the proper pronunciation from TV and it's free . That was about 40 years ago. 😎
Quite often I do not follow the rules of grammar as we talks and so as many people do, except when in writing. If you follow every damn rules in grammar sooner or later someone that close to you would bring that up that you were talking like reading from a book ! 😅. This may not apply to that in UK but here in northern Midwest ,USA 🇺🇸 . Anyway, I am not good at any language , from ToiShanese , Cantonese, American English , or ..... 🤫 . 🦕🦌🐈 . 😎🇮🇹🇺🇸
部分香港人好鍾意捉人英文發音同文法，反映佢哋只係想覺得自己特別叻同好鍾意搵人錯處。學英文除左語言外，學埋人地文代同尊重先係整套英文。自己亦唔好介意人地點睇同時英文唔太好都要去面對同改善，特別係發音。小弟宜家係英國學校工作半年，只有我一個亞洲人，到宜家都適應緊，初初都唔明，但都要不斷聽，宜家多左用英文同同時傾計。我認為時間會證明到學英文同溝通
初學英文，最緊要係要練膽量，不怕講broken English，恥笑你的係華人多過鬼佬，不恥下問，日子有功，慢慢改進，有天自會說一口道地英語.

通常地道英國人好少踩人英文差，反而會讚你英文好。多數係D外來人，自己差就喜歡說別人差，踩低人地相對就可以抬高自己的心態。

英語好不好不止於交談應對，土生土長滿口流利英語也不一定能寫得出寫得好英文，尤其串錯字。初來澳時介紹認識不少港人朋友要請吃喝，席上拿出函件求翻譯及代回覆，十餘年過後那些「朋友」已餘無幾，因為他們的子女已能讀寫英文，不過亦有例外，雖子女能讀寫英文，卻只能用有限廣東話翻譯函件。更慘是時興年青人愛留言不接電話，自己不懂寫英文，子女不懂看中文。
