  • A perfect example of “patience is a virtue”. From missing a meeting with Radio Metro’s founding station manager Koos Radebe and only hearing back from him a year later, Ernest Pillay finally made his way into radio.

Bra D you have a legend there in Smoke, I cant miss that man's show every weekend, i always get excited when ManUtd plays after 16h00 when his show is over, he would play the song that you know but when he gives a song title it is soooo incredible and how he always play original songs for the first time and all this time you knew their covers and you thought they were originals .

David @King David Studio... Thank you for doing this important Project. I appreciated the conversation about racism & apartheid. I grew up in Eersterust in the 1980s and know Mamelodi, Silverton, those Valiant taxis well. Upon reflection, there is a lot do do, to heal the divides in our nation.
Now, to Radio! It is sooooo lovely to meet and see the humans behind the voices of Radio Metro and the golden area of black urban radio that we grew up listening to. Hope to see more - Isaac Phaahla, Khaya Kool, Vusi Letsoalo, Glen #TeddyBear Lewis, Sammy T, TK, Ursula Chikane (née Stapelfeldt), Phemelo Motene, Romeo Kumalo, Katy Katopodis, Robert Marawa, Pabi Moloi, Suga, Ian F, Sasha Martinengo, Darren Simpson, John Walland, Randall Abraham, Gareth Cliff, Shadow Twala

Thanks David for exposing us to Smoke so much. I did not know he has done so much for South African radio. I loved him when he was at Metro. I still love him still till this day. Wherever he goes I always listen to him. I love it when he calls Barry White the Big Buzzer. Smoke be well my brother. You have shaped the way I love Soul music. I never miss your shows on weekends. I wish your shows can be 4hrs longer.

The gods of radio are turning in their graves, we’ve allowed models to take over Radio. No content, thinking over listeners, dead air et al Bob Mabena and I used to talk a lot about this, but again who’s teaching the upcoming presenters about real radio.
