I did some research: the berries are rosary peas (Abrus precatorius) - they are indeed lethal, but only if you chew them. Which they did, except the baby. So it makes sense that only little Paddy survived. This first part doesn't make it clear, but the sequel shows that the two adults did unfortunately pass away.

The baby took the berries while their parents where looking around, he was playing with some plants. They didn't notice till this happened.
Abiously you haven't watched the movie lol .... the baby picked them up without them knowing and put them on the boat... they think that the berries are poisonous but they aren't.

exactly what i thought when i saw this.
I know this film is a classic, but I still can't believe the filmmakers thought having cousins fall in love and have a kid was acceptable.
I do not think the film was meant to “offend” soneone or to claim that endogamy was somewhat acceptable, the film is just the story of these two PERSONS that shipwreck on this island and grow up together, AND TOGETHER they start to know themselves, to feel some feelings they never felt before and they just follow their “nature”… it’s a boy and a girl we are talking about and apart from the fact that they are cousins (which they ignore, they can’t even remeber the MEANING of being “cousins”), feeling the need to basically have sex, it absolutely normal. It’s what would happen even nowadays, under the same circustances. It’s not something that WE should “accept”, it’s just something natural. ☺️ The film does not “promote” incest or endogamy, the film is basically about what would happen to two persons (of opposte sex) if they grew up together apart from civilization… they’d just follow instincts.

This movie is wild. He's perfectly shaven. Their nails are short. Their hair is brushed or her hair would be a matted mess. But hey they do be pretty tho.
Taking care of your hair well she could of found something then again you're probably right about her hair. As for him, well I just assumed he was too young to grow a beard. Most of the time I don't see guys having beards or facial hair until they're about 18 lol.
She had a comb! It's an island so I'm sure they could've found some fruits and berries to wash and condition her hair. I don't find it far fetched.
Dude, my husband is 33 and barely has any facial hair, and didn't start getting that tiny amount until his mid-20's. Sometimes, that's just genetics.

The movie is about 7 year old cousins shipwrecked, and falling in love. They didnt know anything about raising a child, all they knew was to try and get off the island.
But I don’t think they died because when Richards dad finds them he says they’re just alseep.

@@lilicreature9082 no but in the movie in the ending scene the dad looks happy. And even happy music is playing. I think they were just sleeping. Also in the movie when she got stung by a rock fish she didn’t die. So perhaps the ending wasn’t tragic as many people think it was.

Never saw the movie in its entirety but I’ve seen clips on TH-cam like this one. Let me just say this made me really sad. First the baby eating some. Then her saying don’t close your eyes. Then both of them eating some too. It just made me sad. It seemed really poetic and heartbreaking.
To make it even worse, the baby never actually ate any. They just thought he did

この動画はその直前のシーンだけなので心中のように表現されていますが、彼らは「ずっと眠ったまま目覚めない木の実」としか認識していないのでまさか生きて発見されることになるとは想像していなかったのでしょう。
美しいサンゴ礁とブルック・シールズを堪能するための映画でした。

To clarify something, they did not die, this film is based on the original book The Blue Lagoon (novel) where at the end they state that they are not dead but asleep, some interpret this as softening the blow but it is not, the sequel is based on the second book ¨The Garden of God¨ which was published 15 years after the first one, in which the author changes his mind and makes them die at first only to create a story similar to the first one with the baby, contradicting his previous book.
If you realize in the second film it is another ship and crew members who find them and Richard's father no longer appears, in addition to the fact that the baby seems to be much larger than the previous one, I interpret it as an alternate story unrelated to the previous one due to all the changes and contradictions of the sequel to both the movie and the book, but it depends on each person how they interpret it.
Yeah I always thought when he said, no sir, they're asleep, he didn't want to say the truth to him and also to soften the ending, but yeah it does make alot of sense, now that I watch, he was really telling the truth to the father, i always hated this ending, i wish they could have changed it, them being awake and seeing Emmelines uncle and Richard's father, them hugging each other and everything, but some stories don't have a happy ending.

@@Mrd9960 wow, I had never really thought about interpreting the ending like that. I also always hated that they died in the end, but actually nobody knows if he meant it when he said "they're asleep". It changes the whole interpretation of the movie 🤯
They weren't poisonous berries; that's the whole point. they were never poisonous. The kids had been told that by the old sea captain who brought them ashore when they were children

Those berries when ripen, we use it as a bullet/pellet to a toy gun when we're young.
The 1980 movie and the original novel both end on a hopeful note. Stranded for days at sea, Emmeline and Richard are rescued, and a sailor examining their bodies proclaims, "They're asleep," implying the couple has survived.
A hopeful note which the author immediately destroys with the first line of his sequel: “No they are dead”
And for the rest of the story… they survive. The movie ends with their boat being discovered. One man asks “are they dead?” And another replies “no, they’re just sleeping”. So happy ending! At one point they talked about a sequel “Return to Blue Lagoon”. If it got made I missed it.
Hate to break it to you buddy but in the book's sequel, the narrator decides that they are indeed dead. Except for the kid. And the captain even adds they aren't breathing.
I don't acknowledge the sequel. The berries weren't poisonous and Emmeline and Richard were just sleeping.
Throughout the film, dead people are described as sleeping forever, so when they said that they were just sleeping, I assumed it was following the metaphor. The man said 'no, they're sleeping' to soften the blow. That's how I interpreted it anyway
Return to the Blue Lagoon was made, but it is a different couple & different story line.
There is a sequel movie. They were found by a ship. Both parents were dead but the boy wasn't. The ship becomes shipwrecked and they boy goes back to his island home with a little and a woman who survived the shipwreck
There needs to be a warning for this kind of heartbreak. I am a mom I cnt watch this shit. Teens being sexually objectified, thats life. But the baby!!! I cnt

The son pick the berry and put it in the boat while they were not looking,they both knew its poisonous but too late the baby already swallow it...i guess the tragedy of losing their child is too painful for them,its their way of ending their misery of lost in the sea and lost of their child,it could have been the happiest day of their life becos Richard father is not far with his boat but the movie writer jus dont want them to have happy ending..

The sequel Return to the Blue Lagoon (1991) loosely picked up where The Blue Lagoon left off, except that Richard and Emmeline are found dead in the boat. Their son is rescued

Yes but in the sequel movie “Return to the Blue Lagoon” their boat was found but the parents were dead except the baby. The baby’s name was originally Paddy but he was adopted and named Richard like his dad and ended up getting stranded on the same island his parents got stuck on and he lived in their old house with his sister Lilli, like his parents, Lilli and Richard fell in love and had a boy, but this time, they stayed alive.

Also seems to have no armpit or leg hair. The only body hair we are shown is in the pubic area, it was not common to shave or trim the bush in the late 70s (movie was released in 1980.) Her pubic hair was very dark so her leg and armpit hair probably would be as well.

in the movie they are only 17 and 19 and not educated properly being stranded on that island for over 10 years- the baby was playing and took the berries on bored while the parents were not looking

I first saw this when I was about 13 on DVD. I begged my mom to get it for me because I thought Brooke Shields was so pretty and I wanted to be like her lol. So yes I am now 30, the math makes sense to me. Lol

She should've made the baby throw up right after he ate the berries by sticking her finger gently down his throat while leaning him forward so he doesn't choke. Even if the child did die it doesn't mean the parents have to as well. A movie promoting suicide is no good.

This just got recommended to me. Thanks TH-cam. I watched this when I was a kid. What I remember, these 2 adults are siblings. They ended up on the island when they were kids.. Also they had a baby later. And they all die in the end. Well, this movie seemed to be pretty messed up when I saw it. It would not be any better if I watched it ever again.

Their ship got wrecked a couple years ago when they were children. These two are cousins who find out about their sexuality while growing up and became parents of the baby. They were in the boat to leave the island since a boat appeared after many years, they took the chance to use it and find their way back home.
