  • @tim_koch14

From the top of my head before watching the video:
-Alocasia plumbae 'Flying Squid' (still a cool plant)
    -Alocasia macrorrhiza 'Stingray' (kinda awkward)
-Pilea peperomioides 'Mojito' (I try not to introduce any viruses into my plant collection and this plant is just rustling my jimmies)
    -Philodendron Birkin when it's unhappy
-your aunt's crusty old Phalaenopsis that just survived the last decade on a table
-that grey, dusty "public office" Aglaonema
Edit: The last two obviously haven't been rare for decades.

So my husband walked in and sat down to watch this with me (streaming on the tv) and says about the Birkin “oh that’s a pretty plant,” and then on the Godzilla “oh that’s cool.”
So I filled him in, “babe, it’s an ugly plant video.”
He thought it was hilarious. 😂

I actually think the Philo Birkin looks very striking! Those stripes are so clear and clean along the leaves. I only just got one a few months ago and it looks so nice on my kitchen table. It did have a bit of transition shock and a couple leaves turned to goo but it's looking very healthy now. We'll see how it does in the future.

I have had birkin for like a year. It doesn't get a lot of light and often gets underwatered but it doesn't seem to mind. Now that I look at it closely, the bottom leaves may be starting to fade. I actually had the opposite issue as on of the plants in the pot kept growing too much variagation. I had to cut it several times. The new leaves are still gorgeous, the growth pattern is very compact and over all the plant looks still amazing.

I really don't get why Alocasia Jacklyn is on the list tbh 😂 but to each their own. I've added a baby Jacklyn to my collection maybe 1-2 months ago. I really love it. The stems look very mushroom-y to me and the shape of the leaves is so unique. It opened its first true-to-form leaf about 2 weeks ago and it's currently unfurling the second, the ones it had when it arrived are still baby leaves. Is it a bit weird? Yea. Okay, a lot. The texture is really odd. But it's lovely in its own way. I have a few plants I got just because of how odd and out-of-this-world they are, and I know this one would fit, but no, I got the Jacklyn because I saw pictures and I fell in love ❤
EDIT: I sent this vid to a friend who is not into plants. For Mint Adansonii he said "it looks zombie" and I can't unsee it now 😂😂😂

The stripes actually scratch my calathea itch pretty well, which is awesome because calatheas keep dying on me. There is something about it that reminds me of calathea ornata or white star... I haven't seen any leaves fading so far, may it be maturity thing maybe? Or alternatively it takes a very, very, very long time..

The paraiso verde needs to be potted into a heavier pot because it can't stand on it's own (I have a pole) and is currently leaning against the window. LOL I love my Paraiso Verde -- but I had to park it directly under a grow light to get the variegation back (and I don't disagree with a single thing you say about it, either!)
I don't quite love my Birkin, but I don't hate it, either. It's almost the opposite of the Paraiso Verde, too much light and the leaves turn all white and die and it just gets ugly fast. I've had to chop off all the top twice because it was all white and sickly. I picked a plant (from the garden center) that was one Birkin and a pair of Congo Reds in the same pot. Reds are enormous and healthy and look so much better than the Birkin ever will.

Can’t stand Brandtianum but not really because of the silver leaves. I don’t understand how it’s made it to garden centers as it’s so difficult to grow! It looks so ugly trailing, but if put on a pole it doesn’t want to behave either. New leaves constantly came out misshapen or stuck for me even though it’s not an erubescens. I’ve only ever owned 1 but I’ll never do it again. So many nicer silver plants out there.

Lols, been eying those birkings many many times but still haven't bitten the bullet. I wonder what makes them ugly to some peopple. As for me I find anything with fairly clean stripes/veins and strong contrast/weird color very appealing. I have placed my Polly and silver dragon outside and I spray every two days and wash down the leaves. I only kept my black velvet in door in front of my humidifier and I wipe and clean the leaves. The Birkin is growing on me. The more it puts out new leaves the more I love it lol. It’s just a starter plant. I must say I did not like it at first. I want a BOB CEE SOOOO BAD 😂❤ oooouuu and now I want a Phil Verde thanks 😂

I have a Strawberrry Ice 😂🍓 I did pay a fair whack for it and definitely won't make the investment back, but I do kinda love it all the same, when it puts out growth with really high variegation I love the cream and pink. But I get the dislike for the darker leaves it can look muddy.

I agree about all of these especially the Jacklyn. The Zebrina is by far superior in that kind of pattern. However, my paraiso is grown in normal house conditions and he’s pretty damn nice.😉

One plant I learned that I can’t stand cuz I fought so hard to keep alive and now I’m trying to propagate is a Cordyline 😅 I hope it propagates so I can give it tf away I do not want to be a plant killer but that will def make the list of plants I do not like !

To each her own. It's awesome that there are so many varieties of plants so people can get what speaks to them.
IMO, the Birkin depends on the variegation. I love mine, but it's quite light colored. I love my Jacklyn and Godzilla. I think my Brandi is stunning. Strawberry Ice is on my wishlist. I love the mix of colors.

The black cardinal variegated fits well with the color of your shirt and eyeshadow 🤣 you said looks a bit dirty..... I don't think so. It's just a color that makes plants look sick, close to dying. Maybe the reason we don't like it.

I really didn’t think I’d have any of these but I actually DO have. Philo Birkin! But I paid $5.00 for it. Does that make it any better? Lol! I have noticed the white stripes are fading over time and it’s under a grow light. 🤷‍♀️

I have the philodendron bradndtianum. Bought it twice. Once a year or two ago and another just recently. Killed the first one but never found out why it died. They were $7.88 CAD each so no big loss. I also bought the birkin twice. Bother times it grew very aggressively for about 4 months then died suddenly. I very carefully made sure it care instructions were followed perfectly but it died anyway. The first birkin I bought around the beginning of covid and the other a year ago. The birkin were also $7.88 CAD a piece both times. I didn't realize that any of these were rare or expensive. I though they were just a fad plant that swept through the plant shops.
I like both but not a lot. The rest of the plants on the list have a leaf only a mother can love.

In my experience, the Philo 'Rojo Congo' (aka. reverted Birkin) can look perfectly fine up top while it's root system rots away or dries out and dies.
Your's probably grew too many roots, began drying out too quick, and didn’t show symptoms until it was completely cooked.

I do love the alocasia Jacklyn I finally got one a couple of weeks ago. But get your point.
I like the bob cee because it reminds me of beetlejuice but not enuf to get one
For the rest yeah big time. I find a lot of variation makes the plant ill and when they crisp as well. Nope not for me. But I like things others wouldn't
Hope your shoulder is doing better.
    Have fun

so for us in germany, i work at a garden center an we sell birkins, and the reason i absolutely hate them is 1. i think they are boring af, but 2. they almost aalways turn completely white and then you need to cut them off, because they dont grow further than this, and they do this really fast, like on that picture you showed, its probably like 3 more leaves and you can cut them
and i think its not because of to much light, i had one and it also turned white, it was standing beside a north-facing window

    • @kristiemowry3267
      @kristiemowry3267 ปีที่แล้ว

That is what happened to mine. The white leaves were ugly not like white varigation, and yes I cut them off.

  • @arches00
    @arches00 ปีที่แล้ว

I think the black cardinal var looks like the leaves are yellowing off to die…. I think that’s why the variegation looks blah

Phil. Brandtianum-I agree. There’s a type of silver that I love, and a type I really dislike, and I struggle to put my finger exactly on what the difference is. Maybe contrast? I love scindapsus argyraeus, but really don’t like exotica. And the Brandtianum is one I now see in grocery stores, and keep asking why I don’t like it. I’m not sure, but I really don’t.
Birkin-I’ve actually come around on this one. I thought it was really ugly when I first started seeing it, but then I saw one at a friend’s house that was quite beautiful. I still would never have bought one for myself, but another friend gave me a pup from hers, and I have enjoyed watching it develop. So no, not worth lots of money, but for now it’s a welcome member of my plant family.
Alocasia tiny dancer-I loved these but soured on them. The one I had just kept getting spider mites no matter what I did until I threw it away. And, as usual, the big box store specimens I see are just not appealing, so I don’t think I’ll ever try one again. Shangrila is growing on me as I see them more often, and Godzilla looks cool to me, though.

I noticed Kaylee say something really stupid in this video 19:00. This surprised me. She is usually much smarter than this. She said no plant can completely new, they are all "hundreds of years old".
No Kaylee, some ciltivars can be literally less than a year old. They are the result of random gene mutations and such mutations are happening all the time and always will. Epipremnum aureum Gold must be the most common house plant in the world today, and the yellow variegation (and hardiness) that made it so common was unknown until 1960!
And there are thousands of such examples. Species can be very old of course, but NOT all ciltivars.

I think tiny dancer is stupid. I think they made the hybrid and it turned out stupid but they decided to give it a snappy name and people would suck it up

    Kayleeeeeeeeee, pleaseeee...😭The secret to Paraiso... It's *L I G H T* -- not heat!
When people with as big a following as yours, spread that bunk temperature theory, you set folks up for *FAILURE* (especially the less-experienced portions of the community, who are still trying to build a knowledge base and practical understanding, and who look to your word as gospel guidance) which means every time you say this, you're proliferating frustrations and reinforcing needless resentment for what is actually a *super* easy plant... When it can just get what it needs... (Which just so happens to be *LOTS* of light!🌞)
Edit: Now... As far as it being an "ugly" plant, that's fine -- I totally respect y'all's opinions... But *at least* give folks the proper info to grow the poor plant, so it can be judged it at its best!!! 😂

I agree with most of these, especially Ph. brandtianum - it literally gives me public toilet tiles vibes. I would also add most variegated alocasias and anthuriums, Pink Princess, Ph. joepii and all these narrow-leafers.
Jacklyn is beautiful, but impossible to grow for me, for some reason.
