    *Update* Check out my Air Rifle dieseling part 2 • Air Rifle Dieseling Fo... where I try all kinds of different oils and liquids to diesel my trusty Ruger Air Hawk. The good, bad, and ugly of Dieseling an Air Rifle for more power. I use a 10 yard target, bench rest, and chronograph to investigate the benefits of the purposeful dieseling of an air rifle in order to gain extra power. Remember this practice WILL damage your air rifle and could hurt someone so let me risk myself and my rifle so you don't have to. Also, everyone seems to think that I'm actually looking for more power by doing this. If I wanted something more powerful I'd go to my gun safe and grab something more powerful. In reality, I'm sacrificing an old air rifle that I got cheap for experimentation purposes.

    I have done this. Only once, and then took the gun apart to check the piston seal. The seal was destroyed. The overpressure found a weak spot in the piston seal, and created a channel from the front of the seal to the rear. It was obvious the heat melted and splattered the area of the seal where the pressure leaked by. It was a tiny channel, but enough to ruin the seal. Therefore, my suggestion, if you want to diesel an air rifle, is to order a box full of the piston seals, and after every day of shooting while dieseling, take the gun down when you're done, and replace the seal. I noticed no other damage to my rifle.

      Some seals seems at least on the 4,5mm seems to be very hard and able to take the pressure no problem. A friend of mine did this with his 4,5mm air rifle many times a day for years before the rifle eventually slowly died and the power when diesling was enormous compared to without and accuracy did not seem to suffer either. I have not dared to try this on my old competition air rife even if it is very tempting to try :)

    I love this video! It actually refutes a claim I have made for years. In the past during break in I have experienced lousy accuracy because of dieseling. On one gun, more than half of the pellets completely missed the target. I would like to see an accuracy test at 25 yards and 40 yards (typical hunting ranges). At 10 yards, shockwave induced projectile instability would be significantly less that at longer ranges. I watched another video wherein the shooter used Vick's Vap-o-Rub (Vaseline would probably work as well). Using this you could expect a consistent amount on each shot, without so much hazard of the accelerant migrating to the compression chamber, increasing the possibility of ignition in the compression chamber damaging the seals.

    The variable velocity can be attributed to the variable quantity of oil put into the pellets.. The oil was not actually measured.. But interesting to know exactly how much increase in velocity happened.. Thanks for the share.

    I had an old .22 BSA Meteor that I had an uprated spring in. I would push the pellet half an inch down the barrel and added a small wad of cotton wool that had been dipped in diesel right behind it. Don't know how it never blew the seal but it worked well. NOT that I recommend doing it.

    oh and the rifle is in perfect working order. i diesel quite often, and it works great, and i've put 100's of rounds through it already.
    dieseling, and high velocity pellets affecting accuracy teeters on a myth. i've run many many tests. There's a myth saying that if you break the sound barrier with your air rifle, you will lose a lot of accuracy. this is only true if you are using crappy light weight pellets. and by lightweight i mean anything below 7.8GR.
    just to apply some common sense to it for you let's use an example by comparing an air rifle with high-velocity .22 ammunition. now we know that high velocity, often hits that 1650FPS mark which is a pretty good deal above the sound barrier in terms of what is supposed to affect accuracy. standard .22 ammunition generally hovers around 1250FPS.
    even competition .22 ammunition hovers at 1000FPS and sometimes hits the 1100FPS mark depending on conditions. for the most part .22 ammo is highly accurate. it's the preferred competition ammunition. it's what they use at the Olympics, and anschutz makes some of the best .22's in the world. highly highly accurate. at any rate, you don't hear a lot of talk about .22 high velocity and standard ammunition failing big time on accuracy. of course the rifle is a factor, and the shooter is the final say in the matter.
    so why don't bullets(any caliber) carry the stigma that high velocity = no accuracy?? after all some of the most accurate sniper rifles in the world hit close 4000FPS, and are deadly accurate.
    the issue has to do with the pellet. a very light pellet, like those lame gamo 4.5GR alloy pellets can't handle high velocities because they're literally too light for flight. every rifle has a favorite pellet, but alloy pellets aren't famous for being accurate. the reason is when the projectile takes flight, you get your sonic boom, and the sonic boom is supposed to fuck up the trajectory of the pellet, and cause it to tumble. that's funny cuz bullets don't tumble under that kind of stress, they're designed to go faster than the speed of sound. the secret is in the weight of the pellet.
    if you have a 10GR pellet flying 1200FPS, and a 5GR pellet flying 1200FPS, the 10GR pellet has enough energy do to it's weight, to not be disturbed the sonic boom, in fact, when it breaks the sound barrier, the pellet will actually out run the sonic boom and leave the turbulence behind it. if the pellet can out run the turbulence then you're gonna hit your target.
    the question that makes the turbulence myth more of a myth is, "why aren't bullets affected by high velocity the same way pellets are??" the answer is in the weight of the pellet + whether or not the pellet is out running the shock of the sonicboom.
    i know this is a long read, but it's worth mentioning, so people can quit investing so much in what the internet tells you about air rifles. this video is actually scientific proof of that. many of those shots exceeded, 1100FPS which is the magic, ruin your shot speed, and yet here we are watching a video that proves the accuracy of his shots were NOT AFFECTED. had he used some cheap crosman 7GR pointed pellets, the effects would have been more pronounced, and had he been using 4.5GR GAMO pellets, his group would have spread out even further, depending on how much drag the pellet gained from the high velocity, and whether or not it started to veer or even tumble.
    so yeah. 1100FPS air rifle turbulence is a myth....if you got a nice weighty pellet. i just can't understand why people wouldn't ask themselves, why would the pellet behave differently from a bullet at high velocity. cuz myth that's why. i've put 1000's and 1000's of pellets down range at high velocity, and i can tell you it comes down to the quality of your pellet, it's weight, and whether or not your rifle is compatible with that pellet. out run the turbulence, or carry enough weight, and you'll hit your mark. hopefully air rifle manufacturers will quit hiding behind this myth, and raise the power on air rifles. i'd really like to be able to send a 14GR grain pellet down range at 1200FPS. 8GR just ain't got the range for awesome trick shots.

      almost everything you say is correct. As an automobile engineer and part gunsmith and an ex-military sniper, there are no military sniper rifles out there going over 3100 feet a second. This guy thinks his gun is the desieling. Not true if it were so his fps would be all over the place.if he could put measure the pressure as it went off he would see that it's the same as normal. The oil in the barrel makes it slicker so as to move faster because of lubrication.. Oil in air chamber if not the correct type will cause the seals to swell and deterioratehim, just put it all base product in your master cylinder of your car and see what happens.

    • @JW...-oj5iw
      @JW...-oj5iw 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      8ftbed ... some airguns are smoothbore and some are rifled. The rifling in a pellet gun is very shallow due to the requirement of minimized drag since the force behind the pellet is well below a typical firearm. Granted, there are some pretty high pressured airguns but in comparison to high pressured firearms, the difference is enormous. A long time ago, I did some informal testing of .22 caliber airgun pellets using a High Standard Sentinel revolver and blank cartridges. The pellets were readily available Crosman flat point. When launched in that manner, the pellets flew accurately enough for the range I was shooting and delivered some hard hits on inanimate objects. As I said, the tests were informal so what I observed was strictly my own estimation of the performance of the combination and not scientific at all. The power of the blanks and the weight of the pellets were such that I had zero concern that any safe pressure level could be exceeded or even approached.

    I haven’t read but a very few comments so perhaps it’s already been mentioned that there is a second, important lesson here: Set your target up so vertical and horizontal lines are exactly that!
    Can you see how much better your rifle will have shot? Your target would have confirmed that there was significantly less ‘drift’ than appears on your canted targets.

      i have an older swiss arms rated at 1200 fps and last fall i killed 9 squrrels with it this past spring i got 3 rabbits but i use a 14 gr hunting pellet in 177 cal. probably lose some sppeed as the instruction say the factory fps rating is done using the lightest pellets available. the light ones would probably work okey on bitrds ot mice but larger game requires more weight for better penetration. speed is not really a good measure where penetration is concerned have some sabot steel penetrators pelletes that penetrate 3/4 plywood but they are about half the diameter of a 177 pellet so they don't create a very large wound channel. not nearly as deadly as a heavy lead pellet.

      None Ya yes you can I had a Beeman R9 that was stolen from me and there is a spring kit you can get it comes with a special Grease that you rub all over the spring and inside the spring and the Piston seal just comes off with a counterclockwise turn for the piston and then you can put a new poly seal in there which is stronger than the plastic when it came with it and there's some kind of buffer thing that goes in there too if I remember correctly to quiet it down you don't hear the "twang" of the spring vibrating around inside the weapon it's real quiet.

    If you want maximum penetration then you must use a solid lead pellet. Since they normally
    call those things bullets, the next best thing is the solid round ball pellets. The hollow
    pellets crumble and break up upon contact. the solid lead balls blow straight through.
    Without dieseling I used a 900 fps pellet rifle and shot a 177 led ball through an 18 pound Canada goose. shot on one side under the wing and it came out the other side under the
    wing. Must have been at about 10 inches of penetration.

    Interesting experiment. I sugest that at 1100 fps you are soon going to have a leaded up bore to clean, as well as possible damage to seals, as you have mentioned. Also likely is spring damage caused by the dieseling causing coils of your spring to crash into each other violently.
    I would sugest checking grouping at 30 yards, not 10.
    The erratic velocity will likely cause vertical stringing at 30 that cant be seen at 10 yards range.

    I had never heard of dieseling until I watched this presentation. From a physics perspective there are a number of variables that were not addressed. 1) Each pellet should be weighed (yes there can be considerable variability), and only pellets that weigh essentially the same should be used. 2) Each pellet should be inspected to see if there are deformations. If there are irregularities, those pellets should not be used in the test. 3) You may wish to compare the volume of "accelerant." Not all drops are created equal. All-in-all a really fun video.

    10 yards does not give the sonic boom time to catch up to the pellet, when it does it slams into the pellet and causes it to fly off coarse

  • @kevanhubbard9673
    @kevanhubbard9673 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's effectively a firearm, technically but not legally, when it diesels as the projectile is propelled by an explosion.i use to put vaseline in my old .177 air rifle and the pellets would come out with a supersonic crack but I can't remember how accurate it was.

  • @trondyne
    @trondyne 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Accuracy will be affected at longer range... This is because 1 at short range the pellets are not flying long enough to go from supersonic to subsonic and 2 the travel time is short enough to limit destabilization from the shape of the pellets which are designed to fly at subsonic speeds... To make use of the effect you could use a heavier pellet which would stay subsonic and in theory maintain accuracy downrange.

I suspect it was supersonic flight all the way up to that range from the sound it made and the flat trajectory it had.

    Glad to see someone respecting thier springer enough to take it to a real range. My first pellet rifle was a 20 dollar .177 chinese under lever with so much grease in the workings that it dieseled the first hundred rounds at least. Ive had it for 15 years and of course it is now banged to hell and the seals all leak but she still takes out tin cans like a champ. :p Im actually refurbishing the old girl, gona do it all by hand if i can using only scrounged materials. Bit of a challenge to myself. I was wondering though if it might be interesting to try and build her up specifically to use "hot" rounds. Seems to me this is a lot like shooting Magnum and +P loads through a non-magnum gun.

      All new air rifles will diesel due to the barrel still having the factory lubricant in the barrel. Most have a break in period of around 500 shots.

    Just FYI, diesel combustion pressure usually less than 500 psi, mostly 350psi approximately, pump action air rifle approx 600 psi, and co2 cartridge up to 850 psi when new, no chance that dieseling can ruin and air gun

  • @NotSoDumb
    @NotSoDumb 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm thinking that you should be using heavier pellets in that rifle. The light hobby pellets are ok for the weaker pistols and rifles but the power your rifle produces, causes the light pellets to spin out. I would recommend using a pellet like the JSB Match Diabolo Exact 10.34 gr. pellets. They are better for your rifle as they will cause less damage to the spring and piston and your accuracy should increase dramatically. Do a Chrony test with those pellets with and without the oil. Just might be what you're looking for.

    • @NotSoDumb
      @NotSoDumb 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't use the light pellets but that's your business.The light pellets don't create enough cushion when the piston slams into them. Eventually, the spring will brake or the piston cup or end will get ruined.

    Hi RazgrizLivesRS. You may want to check your Google plus account to verify that people can reply to your future posts. As far as the speed of my, "Aiming" this video is highly edited to save time so the viewer isn't watching dead air. As far as the 25-30 yard accuracy number you've stated I'd like to see where that's quoted from and how that was calculated. If it's simply the rough transition distance from supersonic to subsonic such as a high velocity 22lr may undergo I'd understand except that half of my chrony test rounds were already subsonic at the muzzle.

      800lb Gorilla PCP's will not diesel. The extreme temps from the compression of the piston in the springer is what causes the dieseling when a combustible material is present. With a PCP the discharge of air pressure never reaches these high temps.

    • @mrbadx19
      @mrbadx19 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mrandrewmetz the oil used in manufacturing will cause dieseling, you're a moron, congrats!

    • @Mrandrewmetz
      @Mrandrewmetz 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      mr bad example Yes the oil used in manufacturing spring powered air rifles will cause dieseling, I stated combustible material which would include oil. I was replying to the comment from 800lb Gorilla in which he stated for the test to be done with a PCP rifle to attain better accuracy results yet since a PCP would not diesel by adding oil to the pellet as done in the video that would not help with this test. So if you are referring to a PCP dieseling from the oil used in manufacturing then I'm sorry to say that you are incorrect. Any oil in the pressure cylinder of a PCP that is combustible would cause a serious explosion during the high pressure filling procedure and is something all manufacturers take great pains in preventing. Please re read my statement and make sure you understand what is being said. PCP stands for pre charged pneumatic which is not going to diesel with oil added to a pellet. Only springers are known to induce dieseling since they are compressing the air rapidly and causing it to heat enough to cause a detonation similar to a diesel engine. Hence the term dieseling. A PCP has been pre charged with air which expands rapidly on release and actually cools it. Since there is no compression taking place during this firing cycle there is no way to cause dieseling. I hope that makes things clear enough for you to understand. My statement stands, a PCP will not diesel.

    • @jefforeyjohnston7366
      @jefforeyjohnston7366 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Mrandrewmetz Sorry to burst your bubble but you are wrong, dieseling is not caused for heat, it is cause from pressure. It has noting to due with heat or a spring in this case. That is why there are different grades of gasoline. The higher number of octane rating on gas is to prevent knocking/per-ignition. What octane rating is & means is how much pressure the fuel can withstand before igniting, and has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the amount of energy or power in said fuel. Whether you believe it or not 87 octane gas has more energy/power then 93 octane gas and diesel has way more then either but that's a whole nother subject. Diesel fuel is measured a little differently then gasoline but compared to gas diesel has a octane rating around 15-25. If you run 87 octane in a high compression engine it will knock and per-ignite before the piston reaches top dead center or what ever the timing is set for. ALL air rifles work off of pressure, when you load a pellet in the gun you are basically plugging the barrel. Doesn't matter how the gun is charged either PCP or a spring pushing a piston, you're compressing air. When that compressed air is released it hits the back of the pellet driving out the barrel, by having a little dab of some type of "fuel" like diesel fuel or the oil he used in this test,when that air hits the back of the pellet there's enough resistances to increase the pressure to the igniting point of the fuel which causes the pellet to fly faster. To get the most out of dieseling an air rifle find a "fuel/oil" that has a low octane number and use pellets that have the most uniform skirt so it seals in the barrel (that is why you get a flyer or a way different speed reading on your chrony because the pellet isn't sealing right in the barrel).

    From the information on the speed of pellets, I have heard and viewed here on TH-cam from very well informed folks, the faster a pellet travels the less stable it becomes. In general terms that is.
    Now from the looks of those targets without the oil it would seem that the grouping was a tad better. The stringing of the pellet holes on the target when oil was used, kind of bears this thinking out.
    Interesting video here, and I thank you for putting your rifle at risk.

    Dieseling your rifle causes combustion in the air chamber. This is guaranteed to burn your air seals and ultimately damage it requiring a rebuild and new seals. So it's pointless and best avoided.
    You also lose accuracy doing this so again pointless if you're not hitting what you aim at.

    • @a64738

      Yes it will destroy your air rifle or in best case wear it out a lot faster but a friend of mine got years of fun out of his rifle before it eventually wore out. When dieseling with WD40 oil It was accurate enough to hit a seagull sized target at about 100m / yards and it was supersonic with much much much more power then normal...

      +Chandler McDowell No he isn't; I sometimes make up pellets that have a very small grain of solidified double or triple-based nitrocellulose in them and get 100% ignition. One powder I use is Bullseye pistol powder that has been dissolved in a solvent and measured into the base of the pellet. Then it is cured slowly in order to not create voids. It ignites under the temperature of the compressed air in the chamber. It burns quite like a solid-rocker grain instead of all at once and theoretically yields a sustained pressure the length of the barrel but it is rattlesnake dangerous if you do not know what you are doing. I cannot recommend it to anyone!!!
