Dude the bass was soooo groovy. But playing that drum groove with those triplet rolls in the beginning and the sixteenth notes on the hi-hat with accents on the bell of the ride is more my thing!
Band director: do exactly what this drummer did Me: exactly everything? Band director: yes Me: listens to this at 50% speed Song:garbeled mess *next day* Me: plays random stuff at retards for fills Band director: great job!
1st trombone, and one of the best memories of my life so far, when I played it perfectly for the first time, and as I continue w/ those high f notes, I looked at my conductor and his face was just shining as he stopped conducting shakin his head. Thank you Pee Wee Ellis, Jaco Pastorius and Kris Berg!!
Yeah I played the 19th triangle I know you can't really hear it but tri gang just doesn't get the recognition they deserve also I'm only 6 months old and we won the nobel prize and I was playing with a blindfold and my little cousin had the triangle at the same time :)))))))))))
Sight read the piece today with my school's jazz band. Me: "Oh derp, it's just a bass part, there's probably just like quarter notes and all gud" *looks at music* Me: "Aw dang." *Gets to measure 7* "WHAT IS THIS?!" *Gets to measure 47* Director: "Sam, how about we have you play the horn part solo on the bass." Me: "..." *bawls uncontrollably*
I played 2nd Trumpet on this piece in junior year of high school. I played played 2nd Trumpet in the middle quartet part (same as first but harmonized lower in some places). Learning to play that very well was almost the best part of my life. I love this piece.
Just here to say that it's scary when there are 4 trumpets and at least 1-2 trombones playing that crazy hard middle section at 2:08 in unison... I guess that is what we get for having 7 trumpet players in Jazz Band. I'm on 3rd trumpet, but that doesn't stop it from being a smokin' part.
woah people play this song with upright basses? how does that go? i'd actually be really interested in a version of this song with upright's if anyone has a link :P
Experiment with the chords, instead of including the root note in every single chord you comp with, try replacing those with 7ths, 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths, Just have fun with it! but don't try so hard to AVOID using the root note. As far as rhythms and comping, it's ok to add more chords to your comping when playing more modern styles of jazz. When playing old school jazz literature, limit the amount of chords you play, and keep notes shorter. In general, play more on offbeats (ands) than on downbeats.
I’m playing piano in this song, and I’ve only played piano for a semester, and it’s almost time to perform. It’s not too hard, it’s just memorizing the harmonics really. And you can never hear me. I’m used to it though because I play the flute too. So... nothing new I guess. :,)
2nd tenor on this. I'M SECOND FOR A REASON WHY DID THEY GIVE THE HARD PART TO SECOND TENOR WHY. It's fun to play, I just can't do it unless it's way slower. Let's just say, I've been cooking this chicken for months and I'm still gonna get sick.
When playing the with my high school jazz band, I played a mix of part 1 and part 2 trumpet. I played part one for everything except when it got to 47, which is the aids part, I’d switch parts.
Literaly played this in middle school on 1st trumpet and died. Thankfully we played with the high schoolers and no one could hear me just trying to plat absolutely outta my range.
haha playing this in my 3rd grade jazz band XD im a 1st chair trumpet and ive only been playing since june (it’s august now) and i can play this song lol so easy
The description is wrong. Kris Berg did not make this song. Alfred "Pee Wee" Ellis made the song and Jaco Pastorius made it popular by adding his own musical attachment to it, called "The Soul Intro".
yea I was pretty sure jaco wrote the intro. seems like that would have happened too far after the original but what do I know..Anyways around the same time Michael Becker breaks out w.that style, goes with it, and every one follows. then you get SNL.
same but you just have to do it, and it's also really good practice for if you want to do solos or ever really go into music very far. you've gotta know the fretboard!
Played this with my high school jazz band. You know I was grooving on that bass
That's where I'm at now :) For the solo section, did your director let you kinda make your own bass line based off of the original?
i play bass for my jazz band and i changed the solo up a little bit
that was me two years ago... had I the skills I have now it would have been so much better!
Learning it right now for drums in high school
I play it in middle school and also was rocking that bass👍
Dude the bass was soooo groovy. But playing that drum groove with those triplet rolls in the beginning and the sixteenth notes on the hi-hat with accents on the bell of the ride is more my thing!
People who disliked this song should never be allowed to have the feeling of happiness again
Boomer
I agree, btw I'm 15, not a boomer
I dislike it not because of the song itself but rather due to the ungodly difficulty of the bass part
in all seriousness, it's a great song
@@Chaossandra fr i have to play this for jazz band, im a trumpet player in freshman year
@vaughanxaviermusic how does that comment make him a boomer, zoomer?
Instead of bass in this song, we had a tuba player. He carried the band. (I play alto sax. Anyone else?)
Me!
Yeah, we also miced him and put him on a bass amp. HOLY HECK. I played Trumpet one with the aids bit in the middle as well. Such a good song
I play alto as well, too bad I wont be performing this on alto. Never have btw... They needed a keyboard player for this gig.
Band director: do exactly what this drummer did
Me: exactly everything?
Band director: yes
Me: listens to this at 50% speed
Song:garbeled mess
*next day*
Me: plays random stuff at retards for fills
Band director: great job!

GamerBob JVm2132 Gotta be creative. That's the key
That's so true
This is what people ask when they are the drummer

1st trombone, and one of the best memories of my life so far, when I played it perfectly for the first time, and as I continue w/ those high f notes, I looked at my conductor and his face was just shining as he stopped conducting shakin his head. Lead trombone in my jazz band. I love this chart.
MrLowbrassdude so do I, but measure 47 kinda makes me want to die currently. We only got this song 3 days ago so I still get rekt there. ;(
I love the bass part on this especially since it was written by one of the best bassists known to man.
my favourite drum part i’ve played all year
Jeez... those drum solos in the triplet feel section... whoever is playing those is really good!
Olin Zimmet listen to “fully swing ahead” at bar house website

Second trombone! This one goes higher than 2nd usually gets, but it's super fun:D
i got stuck w/ 2nd trombone and my friend got 1st and his part was so much better than mine
I play first alto sax, but with a different arrangement. They both sound so good! Cant wait till i learn it

I was 46th coronavirus on this piece. It’s definitely harder that 47th
The absolute nostalgia from hearing this man I feel like I’m back in freshman year
We're doing this arrangement in my big band right now. 2nd alto. Lots of fun!
2nd tenor and going strong love it
Obligatory comment. High school Tb1 player here just to say I LOVE this song

Ayy I got 3rd on it as well.
Try 14 saxophones, 7 trombones, 8 trumpets, two upright basses, two drummers, a clarinet and a flute. Is there such thing as too big of a big band?
woah people play this song with upright basses? how does that go? i'd actually be really interested in a version of this song with upright's if anyone has a link :P
No mean to flex... but I got first
Alex MacArthur first doesn’t have it. I play 2nd

This is an awesome piece, I play piano in my jazz band.
NESTOR
Nestor, did you just reply to my comment twice?
I'm playing it too, but I don't have much experience improvising accompaniment. Do you have any suggestions for a keyboard noob?

Hah, they gave trombone a tough time, fuck the slide movements
SO RELATABLE!!!! I have to have it down in two days
Same man, just same.
I was 1st Tenor. Everybody did that run as a soli for everybody. I only had to do the solo at 63, and someone else took the 2nd half of it.
Hey, could be worse. You could be the only tenor and have to play the bit at 47 AND the solo...
Played this tonight as a self taught bass player. Didn't know the song was over and kept playing the little solo part, director went with it lmao
this song is lit! first chair trumpet here, and its fun! yeet!

There's this kid I know that played the trombone solo when he was 10. I'll probably never be able to to play it
Ahhh I am actually currently playing it and I got 2nd and its hella fun!!!
Finally a bass part that is semi challenging
The description is wrong. Kris Berg did not make this song. Alfred "Pee Wee" Ellis made the song and Jaco Pastorius made it popular by adding his own musical attachment to it, called "The Soul Intro".
Elias Rivera Pee Wee Ellis composed it. Jaco made that baseline.
Kris just did this arrangement. tunes been around for awhile.
yea I was pretty sure jaco wrote the intro. seems like that would have happened too far after the original but what do I know..Anyways around the same time Michael Becker breaks out w.that style, goes with it, and every one follows. then you get SNL.
