Madala Kunene's 1994 release for MELT 2000 (B&W Music in those days)Freedom Countdown featured his friend Mabi Gabriel Thobejane on percussion. Ubombo caught Bristol Drum n Bass duo Smith & Mighty who in 1995 released it on the Album Music With No Name getting lots of club and radio play from London to Joburg where Rudeboy Paul played it out in clubs and newly establish YFM. Ubombo over 25 years became an anthem and more recently Black Motion paid Tribute to both South African legends Madala Kunene & Mabi Thobejane who in 2018 celebrated 50 Years of friendship and playing together by touring South Africa. The tour started in Madala's hometown Durban at Khaya Records - an intimate venue with a crowd of his most dedicated fans and there had to be a rendition of Ubombo featuring Mabi, Paki Peloeole Kgosietsile, Matthias Abaecherli and Lerato Lichaba. Thanks to Paul Buttery and his amazing team for hosting the gig and to The Department of Arts & Culture for sponsoring the tour.
