i am very proud of being atheist but i'll admit any spiritual song, that isn't a worship song, always makes me feel so at peace with everything i think people of all religions (or non religions) should be able to enjoy this music

He was a master of too many genres and was a blues, jazz, soul, Gospel, pop, Rockabilly and country master. He wrote many great songs. Probably his greatest song was this and his demo version is the greatest version. In 1973 they hung a label on Charlie as a country singer. And he became best known (not for his greatest songs and performances) justt for some OK country songs written by others. Though I love his humor, I prefer Tim when he's serious. He's got so much to offer, and there is so much pain all around, I feel we're missing out on something when he sticks to comedy. That is the first reason this is probably my favorite performance of his. The second is less cheerful. This song gets to me because I feel this way myself most of the time. However, I no longer have any home. Everyone in my family is dead - no parents, siblings, wife, kids, uncles, aunts. No one. And even though I'm not especially poor or in need of any material goods, I've got nowhere on Earth I can call home. To me, "home" is death. That's all that's left.
To say it came from "some American dude" without giving due respect and homage to the composer singer and brilliant pianist who wrote this amazing song. the late great Charlie Rich. You couldn't even begin to lace his boots. Hope you paid your dues to the Performing Rights Society

As an American I can assure you that this is an awesome performance. Even if it is basically a gospel song.... It has a lot of meaning.
