I've purchased more than 33 cars in my lifetime, most of 'em sportscars or sedans in one form or another. When I look back at the most fun to drive of the lot, early 90's Nissan SE-R's immediately come to mind, of which I owned two. Its horsepower? 140. Years later, I owned a modified 385-hp Camaro SS for about six months. I sold the Camaro because it just wasn't that much fun to toss around. Something that tends to be lost with some of the younger kids who are being introduced to their driving careers expecting mini McLarens from entry level on up. Perfect ending, 9.9/10. I believe this is a "bridge the gap" car. Something newer is coming and Toyota wants to lead up to that moment with an "idea" of 'sporty' Corolla. This Apex ed is that idea. It uses current Corolla parts in an effort to boost sales of the name prior to the release of the next "big" Corolla". Personally, they (Toyota) need to develop the hatch more and give N.A. a Japanese "Focus SVT" for the 2020s.
Back a number of years ago, in 2014 maybe, I bought a 2000 Corolla for $1200 certified from my mechanic who I trusted with my life. This made me wonder what he was up to. I asked him if I was getting a vehicle that was junk. "Nope", was his reply. "You see, this is a standard and NO one knows how to drive a standard so this courtesy car just sits here". I bought it and loved it. I had it for three years and drove it like I hated it. I would dump the clutch at 5,000 and get 50 feet of rubber (there's a video floating around somewhere if you'd like to see it) and even get a chirp out of the tires into second. It was a riot!!! I lived in the hills around Sault Ste. Marie and if I drove it like a hybrid (where I shut the engine down once I'd engaged the clutch), I got over 50 MPG. For the first four tankfuls I put in, I got a smidgen over 55 ... each one.

As the owner of an old Corolla XRS..... I could see the appeal of the Apex, but then again the engine is very special in that older XRS. So this Apex seems like a good idea, bad execution. Mind you that no rev hang is nice
If they threw a Camry engine in this, this would be a fantastic successor to the E140 XRS.
Its expensive, but I actually like the attempt. Its the spiritual successor to the Scion tC. Its a long forgotten era of the entry level, low cost sporty car. And the taste that doesn’t force you into a coup. What it could benefit from is a bit less weight, if the saved 100 more pounds then it would be like a real entry sport car
....have y’all ever drove a Nissan Juke?
I just happen to own a 6spd juke, yes
1 year later & I’m thinking the same thing about the tc
Actually upgraded from my scion when I got rear ended to this car it’s great. The CVT isn’t bad at all mind you I wanted the manual but couldn’t really wait for a car due to a long commute for work.
it's crazy how it almost sounds like my 2ZZ-GE revving lol
