- This is day 1 of the Bassmaster on Ross Barnett and as usual things change from practice to day 1. I knew going into this event some things will change but I really didn't think about this one. I also had some disappointments that happens to us all eventually, but sometimes when you keep your head down and keep fishing you never know what might happen. This was one of those days for sure.
God is good Todd. Way to stick with it! Way to keep your head and stay with it. Great mental strength. This was an amazing lesson for myself and many others for fishing and life. You salvaged a tough day and water drop. Thank you for taking the time to speak to all Theo and explain. May God bless your next days on the water and keep hooking them man and God be with you at all times!

It has always been that way, i fished the opens from 2000 to 2005 and it seemed like every event we would have a front come through before day one..... It was always something.. Water level change dramatically or a front!
I'll keep this in mind next time I'm burnt out and pissed off. Awesome video!

Hey Todd, I live here in Ridgeland, MS and fish this lake. I'm originally from Scottsdale, AZ and I'm used to fishing clearer water in AZ lakes. This is the toughest lake I've ever fished. It's constantly muddy and going upriver north past the 43, is where the fish usually are. White Crankbaits, Black and Blue Zoom monster curly tail worms on a Texas Rig, White and Black and Blue Swimjigs, Buzzbaits, and Frogs, are the only baits that seem to work consistently, and even then it's really spotty. Sometimes I can catch them on a Shakey Head Junebug worm with a rattle in the tip, and other times they won't touch it. Lastly, it's stump city and you have to be careful and stay within the lanes or you're in real trouble. You should have gone farther east on that first day and fished in Pelahatche Bay. There's better fish there in my humble opinion. Wish I had known you were here, I'd have taken you out for some killer Soul Food. Maybe next time your here.

This a very interesting scenario and really making me think - about a lake I’ve fished for 50 years - and water levels in different parts of the lake - on the same day - especially from an east west perspective (on this specific pond). I’ll have to evaluate this some more - but having fished it for so long - I’ve always wondered how I can look like Bill Dance one day - and the next day - not even get a bite. Fun to learn more about TX lakes and strike king from you and Andrew. Love to go out on Roberts with ya some day if it’s possible; we live there. It’s not a very easy lake, but rewarding when it’s given em up:-) Just caught my first one (3-6) on your Hybrid Hunter Jr.-great bait for RR!
We smoke them on that bait there. We’ve done pretty good there in some TxTT and bass champs, even won a bud light championship there couple of years ago.

The water drop definitely caused my fish to do like yours. Only thing is once I figurned some things out the fish I did catch were small. Zeroed. Sad lesson learned on my very first Open but noted.

The Rez is a pretty tough lake. Check out 4 trees and gilligans island next time. That weekend they were chomping up river.

@@toddcastledinefishing5924 This is where those lighter aluminum boats will have increased use. On average I burn about a quarter of a tank less than my buddy because I have the Vexus AVX20 compared to his 20ft Glass boat.
Good Video. Could you comment on how y'all choose lure weights? I notice pro's using 3/4 and 1 oz swim jigs and chatterbaits a lot .......... and even very heavy spinner baits when I have used 1/4 and 3/8 oz. While watching the Lake Fork tournament this weekend I saw Gerald Swindel(?) using a 3/4oz shakey head jig, I didn't even know they made them that heavy.
I have never seen anyone throw a 1oz swim jig

I’m not a pro, but I have been bass fishing for 47 years. The longer I can keep the fish under the surface, until it’s up to the boat, at which point I can land it, the more success I will have getting it into the boat without having the fish break the surface where it is more susceptible to head shake and throw the hook. And I don’t hoss 4lb+ fish, I lip them. I watched you loose at least three fish because what appears to me as lack of patience. It’s as if you have to get the fish into the boat from the time you set the hook in under 1.4 seconds, or it’s just not happening... I too, set every hook presuming it’s a 10lbr at the other end, I get that. But at some point, you need to be a little more forgiving, no? No disrespect , I just wanna know why I’m wrong? I’d like to hear it from a pro?
Because I’ve been frog fishing my entire life and when your in 2 foot of water or less they have no where to go but up. You can try and keep a fish down but it’s impossible if it wants to jump. Second it’s not patient it’s what the fish is doing is how I fight it. It’s on braid, big hooks big rod, I’ve boat flipped 8 pounders all day. I don’t know been doing it awhile and had a lot of success is the only thing I can say. Experience of fishing means nothing I my opinion, success on the water does. It means you have found something right somewhere along the lines of fishing

But bringing your rod tip down, while keeping your line tight doesn’t help to keep the fish from jumping out of the water, vs having your rod straight up and bent over to its max? It seems to me that the fish is being directed up, with a degree of force nonetheless... Heavy rod, big line, rod straight up, a fish doesn’t have a chance to do anything but to be dragged in the direction (Up) that your winching on it... And why would one want to even risk hossing in an 8lbr when it’s just as easy to bend over and lip it? I watched at least 3 fish come off your hook right at the boat...
It just seems to me that everything you guys do has to be done in record time, which raises the risk factor to a degree that just isn’t worth the half of second your trying to save... Again, I’m not a pro, however, I do have my own Lake to fish on right outside my back door and I’m on it 3-5 days a week for 2-4 hours each day, so my time is being put in. I think that I can safely say that I spend more time actually fishing than any tournament angler. And again, no disrespect, I’m just trying to understand the logic from a competitors prospective. I have always had an interest in competing, but sometimes I just don’t understand some of the things that you guys do.
I don't like the bow in your rod man. Too much give on the hook set imo. Respectfully
Everyone I know fishes with a lighter rod than me frog fishing. The reason it bends so much is because of how hard I set it I promise
